I grew up in Grand Forks, and lived there off and on for close to 30 years of my life. I should point out that I've lived in other cities within North Dakota, three other states, and a total of 5 countries, as well. What concerns me about Grand Forks is the following: the Columbia Mall is half empty, and there doesn't seem to be any sort of good solution in place to fill those stores or fix that problem. This is unlike West Acres shopping center in Fargo, which has very few empty stores, new stores are constantly opening, and there are events at the mall (beer and wine tasting, live music, art, etc) on a monthly basis. Secondly, when applying for jobs in Grand Forks, many employers have looked at my resume and said, "So... you grew up in Grand Forks, but didn't go to college here at UND? Why not?" This is an ignorant and close minded statement. These days, we have the opportunity to attend college anywhere in the world, either in person or online. There is no need to 'just' attend the university that is in our hometown. Why any employer would assume that we don't have Free Will, and the right to seek education/ life/ opportunities elsewhere is beyond me. That said though, no matter where I've lived, Grand Forks will always be 'home'.

Wow, the city has grown. I spent 2 years at the Air Force base from 1974-76. I remember Harry’s Sipper Market. I lived at 211 walnut street after I got married. We are thinking of visiting the city in September

It is the cleanest city I have every visited. You do t see litter on the streets or highways... I was amazed how well they maintain their city. They definitely show pride where they live!

My son went UND. He did like it BUT people get stuck there! They call it “The Black Hole” of North Dakota.
@LivinginNorthDakota

North Dakota in general can do that... especially for those that put down roots and develop strong community ties. If your son wants to come back - or buy a home anywhere else in NoDak - our team covers the whole state. Call/Text/Email us to get that conversation started and we'll be happy to help.

So, ..................are you from .......................New Jersey?? Is Taco Johns still on Hwy 2? Is the A&W still there? Ever watch the sun set over the engines on the turn table? I don't think it is Burlington Northern anymore. Doesn't one of the UND buildings have dinosaurs on the outside? I didn't see that. Also, you didn't mention fishing in the Red River. It looks like the downtown area changed a lot after the flood. Did Target move out of the mall???

You should also note how local "leaders" are constantly ripping off the residents. They are complete clowns. It's super expensive to live here.

It’s getting expensive to live anywhere, really. North Dakota, in general, is still extremely affordable compared to other places around the USA when weighing wages against costs. Thanks for sharing!

@LivinginNorthDakota not in Grand Forks. It's, on average, 20% higher than Fargo. And again, the city is super corrupt.

@@NodakNews I hear you! Local politics is always tough. Good thing the residents can vote out bad leadership. Focusing on GF as a place to live, - income opportunities vs. cost of living - Grand Forks (and North Dakota in general) is one of the best places in the USA where someone can earn a significant salary - while finding home prices lower than you'd typically see i another high income areas like Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, Texas etc. The big negative for most: WINTER IS COMING.

@LivinginNorthDakota nah it's getting worse every day. Especially GF. House prices are ridiculous. Works awesome as a homeowner, but I would hate to be a buyer right now.
@LivinginNorthDakota
@LivinginNorthDakota 9 ай бұрын
@@NodakNews over time, home prices tend to only go up (at least in desirable areas to live). Grand Forks seems well positioned to be a place many people want to live for the foreseeable future... statistics show that more people are moving in than moving out. I'm sure the growth and change is difficult for some - but definitely welcome to others. There are some gorgeous new neighborhoods being built in the south end of town. To anyone else reading this - DM/Call/Text us to learn more about buying a home and moving to GF.

What about Black people being welcomed?
@LivinginNorthDakota
@LivinginNorthDakota 9 ай бұрын
Hi Tatiana! Thank you for bringing up this question. It's important to address and understand the inclusiveness of any community you are considering moving to. While it's true that Grand Forks and, generally speaking, North Dakota has not historically been very diverse, many in the community take pride in fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment. The community here values hard work and camaraderie, with many locals appreciating the efforts of anyone who contributes positively to the neighborhood and broader community. We believe that every individual's experience can vary, and we encourage you to visit and gauge the atmosphere for yourself. You might find that the warm smiles, neighborly attitudes, and the close-knit community vibe resonate well with you.

Actually, throughout Grand Forks, all of the streets are tree lined. That is, the city of Grand Forks plants and maintains trees up and down every street in Grand Forks. You can imagine how lovely it is to drive down some of these streets in the Springtime and see hundreds of pink flowering crabapple trees, or to drive down Belmont Road and see 100 year old trees that are arching over the street, making a lovely and verdant canopy.
