Lisbon is HIGHLY recommended. My first time there was back in the 70s and been there a few times afterwards most recently in 2019. Things haven't changed all that much... If I were to make one suggestion it is that you MUST make reservations for the better restaurants and in high season its almost impossible. I can't tell you how many customers I saw who were turned away because they hadn't made the effort to book. tente aprender pelo menos um pouco de português

As a portuguese , yes living in Portugal is good for foreigners ! The costs are extremely low comparing to other parts of europe ... not to mention the weather and how friendly we as a community tend to be ;) But it doesn't work the same way for portuguese residents Wich is sad ! I love my city but just to give an exemple , here the minimum salary is 650€ and some house rents go up to 700€ . .. it's just an example!

I’m Portuguese! Warning - Portuguese people are always complaining! - If many of us worked towards building more skills to increase our monthly income as much as we complain the salaries would be higher! The thing is if you live in London or any other western capital city, salaries are higher but so is everything else. To rent out a 1 bedroom apartment in London, not anywhere fancy is more expensive than the minimum salary. Most people have to share housing with strangers if they do manual jobs or non qualified jobs such as waiting, etc! This is a fact!

Hi Josh and Kaylie; My husband and I will be coming to Lisbon, on a layover from Marseille to France on TAP on the first of September. We will be bringing with us a puppy that is only three and half months old. She is a bearded collie and a very sweet baby, but she is a baby. We are staying in an Airbnb close to Avenida Metro Station. It's become clear to us that this little one cannot keep up with us and therefore I am looking for someone to take care of her for a few hours a day on the afternoon of the 1st, the 2nd and the morning of the 3rd, so that my husband and I can sight see. This has been a problem for me, finding someone in a new country, that we don't know. Then, this morning, I woke up thinking about you two. I was wondering if you knew anyone that would enjoy hanging out with a small puppy for a few days. Of course they would get paid. Would you please let me know? Thanks so much.

We actually have an interview with someone living in Lisbon and he goes into a deep dive on his personal cost of living. That interview will be released this Sunday and we're happy about that because he has concrete numbers compared to what we're seeing on Numbeo. The good thing about Numbeo is that it's a site that's user driven. The downside is that often times, the cost for things and lifestyle expectations are higher for expats than locals and on Numbeo, you can't tell who's an expat or local. - Josh & Kalie

Keep hearing about apartments with no central heating/ac. If one is willing to spend a bit more, are a bit more modern apartments with better insulation (sound and heat), heating (central or otherwise efficient), a/c etc. available? Thank you Josh and Kalie. Which Lisbon neighborhood would you suggest living if we want a bit of space for growing a few herbs/vegetables or having a bit of nature for our indoor/outdoor cat? (some bushes or grass, something other than just concrete?) Thank you!
@ExpatsEverywhere4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for reaching out and asking this question. To be honest, Nesit, it's not as much the neighborhood as it is building/apartment/house that you're in. Obviously, the future out of the city center you get, the more space you'll have or at least lower price per sq/m. but you'd be very surprised what people can do on a terrace or rooftop. In fact, we were just in a realtor friend's apartment here in Porto and they had a small private outdoor space in their apartment! Right in the middle of their apartment there was this "courtyard" that opened up to the sky above and it had a table 2 chairs and an umbrella! Our best advice would be to consider the size of an apartment that you want, and the price you're willing to pay, then contact a realtor (or set your search parameters) based on wanting a bit of space for an herb garden. Does that help?
@nesitbotica59194 жыл бұрын

Just a heads up for those thinking of moving and working here: the cost of living in Portugal is great for foreigners, but not if you're working here. Minimum wage is 650€. A good salary is around 1000€. The housing price they listed is very, very optimistic, especially for living in the city. Expect prices more around 400€ for a simple bedroom somewhere with a decent commute to the Lisbon center (from 15 minutes to one hour, depending on the zone, since our transportation system, while cheap, is known for being bad and unevenly spread out). If you actually want to rent out your own place, expect to pay around 900€ for a smallish, somewhat worn house in the outskirts, and around 1200 to 1500 if you want to live closer to the center. These prices still do not include utilities or furniture most of the time. Also, absolutely be prepared to learn portuguese if you aren't moving to the very center of Lisbon. Outside the posh and touristy areas, you will find that a lot less people know english, so everything will be much harder. Basically, if you're coming in as a digital nomad, yes, you will have a great time in Lisbon, and it won't be much different from what was described here, but be aware that this is considered upper class living. If you are thinking of working here, be aware that you will be living under very different conditions, and you will understand why portuguese youth is leaving the country in droves.

No arguments here. Thanks for your input. Our prices are aggregated data from sites like Numbeo.

@ExpatsEverywhere3 жыл бұрын
Hi Pablo, that city doesn't exist really. You can't be not far from Lisbon and close to the Spanish border unless we have a different point of reference for not far from Lisbon. To us not far from Lisbon is, Setútbal, Cascais, Estoril, or Sintra for example. Estremoz or Elvas might be your best options as they're close to the Spanish border and in small more rural areas. - Josh & Kalie

There is a reason the population in Lisbon proper is declining. Sadly, no one lives in Baixa or Bairro Alto any more , the two places you recommended living, because they are unlivable due to all the bars and tourist traps. There are 22 other parishes in Lisbon proper that are very nice, however Expo is not one of them. Expo is outside Central Lisbon. Also, in case it matters, Lisbon is quickly loosing its identity due to all the expats that have no interest whatsoever in assimilating.
@ExpatsEverywhere4 жыл бұрын
We certainly recommend people living in Expo if they're not waiting to live in the city proper just like we'd recommend Matisinhos to people wanting Porto but not wanting to live in Porto. It's fine. Gee a double posting, regarding Penang 8:08 I had the fortune to make the acquaintance of a former police chief in Penang while in Buttersworth. He told me that there is a big issue with crime and that I should be "careful". He said it wasn't overly violent crime, more like pickpocketing but because of a lack of opportunity there are gangs of kids who will rob you. Please keep that in mind Patrick ! Hi, Isochest. When was the last time you were here? You know the first time we visited was a little over 10 years ago and we would have said the same thing, but being back now, it's amazing how many people speak English at a very good level. We've found Portuguese people at least in Porto to be amazingly open. Lisbon not as much. Big city mentality we think. It's always great to learn the local language and what a great way to make friends as you help them with their English and they help you with your Portuguese, right? - Josh & Kalie

@@ExpatsEverywhere I last went back in 2006🙁. When I first went hardly anyone spoke English. I was young then and no ties like now. What helped then was Ham Radio. I got to know some radio hams in the Espinho area and their families. I was able to practice from home. All good fun. I would think if you have children living with you they will learn through school and help you. But good to know you find people who know English. It opened up a new world for me and I have found Portuguese speakers here in Manchester too!

Hi Deepak, we're not exactly sure what you're asking but what we can gather, you want to know how much is the minimum you'll need per month for a family of four. A safe minimum would be €1,500/month but it won't be living the high life. €1,500 will be housing, utilities, and food. (2 br apartment so you and your wife in one room and your kids in another | you'll need insurance, which we didn't factor in here. You might be able to get national insurance at some point, but international insurance will be €300-1,000 depending on your situation). Remember, Lisbon will be the most expensive of these. If you're wanting to go cheap, don't go to Lisbon, try Coimbra or Braga.

@ExpatsEverywhere4 жыл бұрын
Great question, we have a few back at you though. Is your $1,200 net or gross? Factoring in taxes and other deductions living alone, we'd say no in Lisbon. $1,200 can be done with a roommate but not on your own in Lisbon (or Porto really.) If you're talking about $1,200 net, it's possible depending on where you want to live. You'll also need to factor in health insurance, which an international plan can cost you a couple $100, however, if you get on a more local scheme after some time, it can be quite cheap. Taxes, housing and insurance are going to be the questions you've got to answer for yourself before making the move. Are you looking at coming here with a digital job or have you been offered a job?

The steps are generally as follows: -Contact the schools that you're interested in. -Get information about the schools (application fees, type of curriculum, extra curricular activities, language of instruction, and other things you find valuable) -Schedule a school visit (with COVID this will look different than pre-covid and different from school to school) -Apply to the school FEES typically apply here -Schedule your kids to take the different admissions tests (generally an English test and aptitude test for Math, Science, and Language) FEES are typically involved here. -Wait on results and subsequent acceptance -If accepted, pay appropriate FEES.

It's "BAIRRO Alto" not "Barrio". Remember they speak Portuguese in Portugal, not Spanish. This channel name is pretty misleading. Expats actually live in the country. It's not the same as researching some facts and reading them out loud on camera. "What expat life would be like in Lisbon" is a perspective that only people that live there can share. And by the way, your pronunciation gives away that you never even tried to learn Portuguese, which an expat would because that's part of experiencing a culture.

Thanks for the criticism. This series as we’ve explained is a subscriber voted series. It’s been really fun. We’re about to wrap up the year with Y and Z. Another commenter also pointed out that we missed the spelling mistake. We simply missed it in our editing process. It happens. It’s not the first time and unfortunately it won’t be the last. Furthermore, it’s slightly ironic because we do live in Portugal and are trying to learn Portuguese. As you probably know, Brazilian and European Portuguese are quite different and the Portuguese that Josh knows and is more familiar with is Brazilian Portuguese. It’s cool. We’re trying to adapt just like we did with Latin American Spanish and European Spanish when we lived in Madrid. Our goal with this series to to rightly source interviews with people living in the city that got chosen. We have an expat interview in the works but were hoping to film it in person. CoVid had other plans but we’ll get that Lisbon interview out there. Thanks for engaging. Have a great day.
