This is an excellent video for anyone considering or planning a move to Portugal. I also highly suggest a scouting trip in advance for folks considering the move to check out the areas that interest them. It helps to make an informed decision about where you would like to live. Most importantly and this can't be stressed enough, please folks, take a deep dive into your tax situation. Learn about the Portuguese tax system and tax rates, as you will have to file taxes in your nation of origin as well as in Portugal.

Thanks for watching. We've covered the topic of taxes quite a bit on our main channel (ExpatsEverywhere) and on our Podcast. We agree. Those that are looking at Portugal especially for the long should really look into the tax obligations. - Josh & Kalie

Do you have a reference for retirees who want to move, but are debating between Portugal, Spain or Italy? The taxes are a bit higher than the US in all 3, but RELATIVELY similar. Without the NHR program, stopped in Jan 2024, this seems that it’s less inviting. I’ve heard that getting a house built in Portugal takes from 2-3 years, and buying existing houses will still take upwards of 6 months to a year, while establishing Visa credentials - which I understand requires a proof of accommodation - at least a rental lease agreement. Going over for an extended visit seems smart, but want to rent outside of Lisbon, as it’s central for running around to research best places for us to buy and live.

I believe Portugal is lower on taxes. I believe you have to pay taxes on your worldly income where as Portugal has I believe 4 yr tax break.

I'm an American living in Belgium, now with citizenship, so, I won't need a visa, I have an EU passport. The thing that makes me cringe is the language. It is cheaper there than here. I'm still considering it. BTW, bureacracy in Portugal is no different from anywhere else in Europe. The US is more efficient in that sense. I don't miss it, though. I was in Porto last week and I've been to Lisbon. I think I prefer Porto. It's a beautiful city and Portugal is a beautiful coutry. Who knows, maybe we'll meet for a glass of port wine and a lunch of bacalhau sometime😉

I am hesitant to consider Portugal because I'm Canadian and the CAD to Euro FX rate is worse than the CAD to USD rate. I get that things are generally less expensive there now but that may not always be the case.

Did you use a service to assist you with this or do it on your own? Do you have an NIF number, you need that before you can do anything financial in Portugal. We used Bordr and it only took a couple of days. Hope that helps.

Again, pretty much on point! My absolutely anecdotal evidence tells me that there is a decrease in all the Portuguese hype, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, because it’s a real downer to have your expectations be crushed by reality.

Inflation is everywhere and in general Portugal is much cheaper. 7 or 8 of the top 10 cities in the world for cost of living expense are American cities. Lisbon and Porto are 101 and 112.

If you are wealthy and want to enjoy life, Portugal is better than Florida and California. But it is not just about prices, it is also about the quality of goods and services that you can buy. However, the US is still better if you want to work hard and get rich.

@qwqwlex lol "us is better if you want to work hard and get rich" Someone is stuck in the 90s lmao Work hard and get your value extracted by your boss and even more-so the ultra wealth, and never own a home... is more like it in 2024. Lisbon and Algarve having more English speakers is a false statement and completely contradicted by statistics. North of Portugal has also better proficiency (easily confirmed by many articles and reports online). I really love to see foreigners living in Porto/Portugal but many misleading facts are usually spread online. Cascais having a Great weather is also debatable (the central part of the town is sunny but the remaining areas of the municipality not really. Same for sintra. Very foggy and rainy. Lisbon west coast (Sintra, Ericeira, etc) is the most cloudy, windy and humid in the whole county (especially during the spring and summer months with many days of persistent fog). Wishing you all the best 🫂!
@expatseverywhereexplores4 ай бұрын
We'd love to see those fact, João. At this point, you're just throwing out statements as well. Based on our experience in the cities of Algarve, not every nook and cranny, English is more common likely due to tourism levels and sheer number of Brits but if you have granular data surveys, we'd love to see them. Regrading Cascais, we are speaking about the city center. Our audience thinks of the city centers of a places and not the entire municipality of areas when we speak about them. When we need to differentiate, we will. Take care. - Josh

Do your own research. The US is more open than Portugal on this matter. In case you don't know, Portugal was once part of a caliphate and I can see some of its Islamic roots are still there. Northern Europe may be better for you.
