We live four hours south of the southern Mexican border, in a beautiful city called Xela, Guatemala. We have walmart, 3 modern malls, all the conveniences. Monthly we spend about $1100 with no budgeting. We are at almost 8000 square feet so temps are 70s for the highs and usually high 40s at night...never hot, which we love.

Wow! So much more expensive than the last time I was in Mexico in 2017. We live in Oregon and almost all the items you priced we pay less for here...I'd say 75-80% of the prices you quoted.

It is all about the same pricing for food as here in Asheville, NC (a tourist city) . However, during leaf changing season, the AirBnB costs would be about four times as expensive.YMCA is about $79 / month. Hot yoga is $149 / month.

Your grocery prices are higher than in Westchester, NY, particularly your chicken. The rent is a steal though. Coffee house is less expensive. Sounds like you can eat out for the same price as buying groceries. And fast Mexican food cheaper than groceries for sure.

I just left Merida and there are big grocery stores. However, at the open air mercado the meat, cheese, eggs and produce were so much better priced.

Have been living in Mexico for 4 years now close to Puerto Vallarta in a small village. The few factors that contributed to the undeniable cost of living increase: 1) exchange rate went from 1US$ = MN$25 in 2021 to MN$17 in 2024. So if you are spending dollars off the bat this is a 47% cost increase. 2) USA and Canadian tourism and migrants (my wife and I are two of them... lol) who now live in Mexico can afford the prices, so the prices settle at what the demand can afford. 3) and of course COVID hurt businesses, so now they are trying to recover from suffering of 2021-2022. 4) actual inflationary forces in the economy. Where we do our groceries, the prices are higher for the same product after converting to US$ compared to the prices at Fry's in Phoenix. But guess what: we cough it up for the convenience and quality. 😊

Supermarket prices are extremely high in Mexico considering local average wages. I found that most things cost around the same as they do in the UK (where the minimum wage is 7-8 times higher than it is in Mexico), and that some things cost more, e.g. yoghurt, wine, non-Mexican cheese and non-Mexican ham. I doubt that the Mexican working class can afford to shop in these places, and TBF I'm not sure how they manage to survive at all.

I think the same thing! The prices are like the same as in the U.S and cost more if imported but their wages are much less than in the U.S. You can’t go to the little stores because they don’t have everything 😳

Just two things for expats thinking about moving to Gto: It is extremely hilly in the residential parts of town and many people, especially retirees or people with disabilities, can't walk up those streets. Also, if you don't speak Spanish you may struggle because there isn't the large, English speaking community that exists in other cities in Mexico.

Yep, that's exactly right! I will say that the locals here are very kind & patient with foreigners practicing Spanish, so it is not a bad place to learn.

It's so interesting watching these videos. We live in the small village of Bahia Asuncion, BCS. Because we don't have many options with big stores, we don't spend a lot of money on groceries. Instead, we have to get creative with our meals. We learned how to make great beer and wood fired pizzas along with granola, bread, and sourdough tortillas. As a result, our food budget is really inexensive. Our biggest expense is our CFE bill which runs about $2000 pesos for two months. Between Starlink and four people streaming videos and working online, our electricity use is a lot. Fortunately we don't need or have airconditioning where we live. I look forward to watching more of your videos.

Thank you for the video. My wife and I are planning on becoming expats in the next couple of years, and we are looking at three different countries to start visiting. A question I thought of while watching this video was with the title "Living in Mexico", how do you stay there for a month at a time? Another question I thought of was when you mentioned you have travel insurance. What does the $90 / month cover? And I don't know if you have looked into this, but have you seen income requirements for Mexico to become a resident? They seem much higher then the other countries we have looked into so far.

Hello! That sounds exciting - just curious, what other countries are you interested?? As US citizens/residents, we can stay in Mexico up to 180 days on a tourist visa. When entering the country, you just have to notify the immigration agent how long you intend to stay. You can see what's covered by general travel health insurance here: safetywing.com/nomad-insurance#coverage I also know that you can get private health insurance in Mexico as a temporary resident. Yes, I've seen MX income requirements for temporary and full-time residents. The requirements vary quite a bit depending on which Mexican consulate you visit (in the US). Also, you can enter with your savings/investments. That might be an easier threshold to meet for many people. You can apply for residency with either the income requirements OR your savings & investments requirements.

None of them have the income / investment requirement that Mexico does. As for the 180 day tourist visa, doesn't that depend on where you apply and / or enter the country? There are people saying you won't automatically get the 180 days, it could be much shorter than that, which affects how long you can rent. My wife and I do not want to move / live somewhere where they know every penny you are bringing in, which is what the income / savings requirements of Mexico will do, give them all of your financial information. The other countries we have researched only require a minimum monthly income and being a certain age when retiring there. Don't want to be known as the "rich gringo" that just moved in.

@@marcd1981 Hey, it's Gordon - the 180 day tourist visa doesn't depend on where you apply, it's just that there's no guarantee you'll get 180 days. The border agent is the one that grants the length of your stay, and they write your exit date in the stamp on your passport. You have to tell them you plan on staying 180 days, and theoretically they should give it to you. But you are at the mercy of the agent. As for the income requirements, it is a bit high, but again, you can enter with your savings/investments. I would also guess that MX is far cheaper than Costa Rica. Cost of groceries, etc. is much higher in CR. I don't know anything about Panama... The people that will know your financial info are the people at the MX consulate in the US (I'm sure it's in some national database, butas far as I know, you don't have to necessarily check-in with MX authorities in the state/city where you plan to reside). I think you will be considered a 'rich gringo' based on your living standards, not really based on knowledge of the financial requirements for you to be there.

That's what I was saying, you are at the mercy of whichever agent you get, not a set rule that would apply at any check point. As far as Costa Rica and Panama, I believe it is cheaper / easier overall moving to either of them over Mexico. They have a Pensionado Visa that only requires that you show about $1,500 a month in income, and the Visa also gets you many discounts on every day expenses, from cable / internet, food / restaurants, travel costs, etc. Health insurance is also very affordable, full coverage for less than $200 / month for a couple. So, all they have to know in either of these countries is that you have enough money coming in monthly to pay your bills, not how much you have in the bank overall.

I give you a great recommendation so that no one abuses you and you spend your money better. If you came to Mexico, investigate how much it costs to rent a home in the area that you like, ask the people of that area, remember each area and each city and town changes the price, do not pay more because over time you will only harm yourself and others and that in Mexico is frowned upon if people are friendly and do not act like a local you will be rejected from that community.

Im currently living in Brazil a small city called Alto Paraiso beautiful nature but the city’s infrastructure leaves plenty to desire. The cost of living here is high compared to most Mexico videos I’ve seen. A place to live like yours furnished and with cleaning and good Wi-Fi is around 850-900 usd per month.

Hello - yea it seems like they did raise the prices. But it also seems that the host uses seasonal rates. So when I look at next year January it's quite similar to what we paid. Any chance you are looking at October? They have several huge festivals during that period and I'm sure they raise the prices for that month (and maybe November, too).

Hi :) It's been kind of shocking to hear from so many people that these prices are so similar than the US. Crazy! This tells us 2 things: 1. We eat WAY TOO MUCH! 2. haha I don't know how to help you there. we always eat in the streets/markets and never get sick. just look for places that are busy so you know the food is fresh, and if you're sensitive then maybe avoid things with fresh greens 🤷🏻‍♂️

I feel like this isn’t much cheaper than my local Walmart here in Colorado… you guys must be shopping at a very up-scale supermarket in Mexico. When I was in Leon (not far from you) back in 2022, I went to a a supermarket and I remember prices being about half of what you guys showed. It wasn’t anywhere near as fancy as the market you guys showed though.

It was a Soriana Hypermarket - the only large supermarket in the historic part of Guanajuato. I'd say it's neither budget nor upscale for MX standards. We highlighted many international products which are more expensive, and the exchange rate now is different from when you visited in 2022. + inflation... so yes, things are more expensive.

A lot of people said that. But in our experience with the US lately, we thought Mexico was a lot cheaper. We cannot afford to live in a US city right now. South Florida is certainly more expensive than this. But I guess it really all depends on where you live :)

hmmm, we shopped at the only major super market in the historic center and rarely saw any gringos inside. it was 99% local. i don't think the expat population in Guanajuato is big enough to have an enormous 'gringo' supermarket.

There are very few expats in all of Guanajuato City. All over Mexico when I go to a supermarket the majority of shoppers are still locals, even in areas that do have a substantial expat community.

I am single, eat a lot of the best foods and I spend about $250us per month on groceries. I'm a great cook so I make and eat dinners mostly at home. I also rarely shop at Soriano and shop where the locals shop. Buena suerte!
