I loved this video. I just love this woman's personality! She reminds me of a best childhood friend who now lives in Athens. Yes, stress can kill. My husband took is own life almost a year ago, my father died a month later. Zoning issue with the town, legal bills pouring in. I was prescribed beta blockers to keep the waterfall of adrenaline levels under control, and I was diagnosed with "broken heart syndrome". Yes, it really is an cardiac condition caused by acute trauma/stress. In a very real way Mexico saved me. Once I decided to go for it, researching and planning consumed me and gave me a positive future goal to concentrate and work on. I realized a couple of months ago that it kept me going and offered me respite from the heartbreaking experience of repeatedly living through my husband's death . Mexico is already my friend and protector. Can't wait to board my flight tomorrow.

I really felt that part where Amy teared up. I closed an 18 year business of being self employed and moved to Mexico. I was under tremendous stress that was 7 days a week. 365 days a year. I actually did do a 5 year plan and my husband who retired from his job and we worked together 7 days a week on my business to make and stuff away as much money as we could. Even still we had family and friends saying we were crazy for walking away from it. But, we both had numerous health problems from the stress. My main ones were insomnia, panic attacks, chronic fatigue and back pain. I had had 3 MRIs on my back with no clear answers. But, we knew if we didn’t change anything we would be dead sooner rather than later. We’re permanently in Mexico for 8 months now, and all of my health problems are history. And on top of it, I lost 30 lbs without ever setting out to do it. I believe it’s because everything is preservative and GMO free. We also, after 53 years together, feel like honeymooners. 😘 😊 I’m happy for Amy that she has a plan.

Oh my gosh, Girl, ... God works in precise ways. You just told my story. I don't know that I've ever met anyone so similar, down to the actual remodeling, ... I do it all, just like the HGTV gals. I love it, and I know you do too. I'm from Seattle, UW. I was a RE agent for 22 years, I'm a single woman with no children, and I recently decided as well that the stress isn't worth it. Packed it in 1.5 years ago. I had long term rentals and sold them, can't take it anymore. It's like a boat, the best day of your life is when you buy, and the next best day, when you sell. My parents raised me in Mazatlan from 1964 to 1967 before we moved to Southern CA. My heart has always remained in Mexico. I love the culture and love Mexican values. Unfortunately, I'm looking on the Pacific, but fear as you've stated, everything is already so expensive. Gosh I would love to be friends with you as I feel we have so much in common. I'm just halfway through the video now but needed to reach out immediately. I haven't travelled in a very long time as I was holding down a RE Business I built up, rentals mostly from after the 2007 debacle. Thank you life I don't have to deal with RE anymore. Major changes are on the horizon. So, all this to say, You are pretty much my mirror. My mother is elderly in the North East and I'm making sure I'm a short kind of plane ride away. After that, I'm officially considered and Elder Orphan. I see finishing my days out in Mexico. Those fruit and veggies at the market is enough to make me want to live there. Who's more rich? The US with the Walmart product or that beautiful natural spread you showed in the beginning. I love Mexico. Please, is there a way we can stay in contact?

@JoseArteagaTravels11 ай бұрын
Great question! Thanks for sharing!
@DestinationRetirement11 ай бұрын
Hi Fitz, (Amy here). Since the house on 66 was in INAH (historic building process) it was 2 1/2 years before I could start building so I had that time to save. Also, selling my big floating house allowed me to build out the 549sf tiny house, cutting my mortgage in half and utilities. So I hard core saved money. Needing to build up the funds also gave me the push to work extra hard.

Crazy question: Can people hop back walls ? Break in that way ??? How do you /do people protect themselves that way ?
@JoseArteagaTravels11 ай бұрын
Of course just like anywhere else in the world. There are many ways to protect yourself..... except if you are from the USA then you are used to something different. In Mexico you need to do like everyone else in the world and be responsible for your own stuff. You can have security systems, hire people, get dogs, get some sort of protection. The reality is that crime is very minimal in Mexico compared to the USA simply because people out here take it upon themselves to protect themselves and the would be criminals know this, they also know the cops wont do anything either so it is up to the discretion of whoever caught them to deal justice. Most people are more afraid of the consequences than going to jail for a night. Its a complicated question which I try to answer on my channel over and over again. But it is one of the reasons why most people never leave their bubble of the USA..... because of the promise of "safety" they think they have in the USA will never be replicated in Mexico. If you have never really experienced life outside of that bubble then perhaps Mexico is not for you.

It´s the burn out of city life and work that you escape in cities like Merida or in beaches like Cancún, Cabo, Playa, Puerto Vallarta, Tulum, etc. This burn out also happens in big cities in Mexico like Mexico City (where I'm from). Personally I'm really burnt out by business, business problems (specially in an after Covid) , stress, insecurity, traffic, etc. and I'm also seeking a place with a slower life without so much stress. I'm looking into Merida or a beach.

I heard that Mexico govt taxes you on your revenue instead of profit. For example, your Airbnb earns $2000/month ($24k/year) but the profit is $500/month ($6k/year) you get taxed on the $24k for the year making Airbnbs unprofitable in Mexico. Is this true?

We have a houseboat on Hayden Island in Portland Island. We have been watching Amy's KZbin videos and were so surprised to see her on your channel as we have been watching yours also. We also love Mexico and have 3 rentals(very small condos, only 450 square feet)and one condo 12 hundred square feet with a fabulous view of Cabo and the sea of Cortez) that we live in 5 months of the winter season. We chose Cabo because we have many options on how to make it back home. We have a straight thru flight from Portland to San Jose del Cabo only 4 hours and about a 25-mile drive from the airport. This is our 14th winter and have also driven the Baja 5 times...along with many other Americans and Canadians. In spite of what you hear, it is a safe drive as long as you don't travel after dark( cars without tail lights or maybe a cow lying on the warm asphalt to keep warm)

why gringos always cry in this type of videos?
@JoseArteagaTravels2 ай бұрын
Because they are emotional about what they are talking about. The same reason anyone from any country would cry when talking about why they have to leave their country. Igual que lloran los Mexicanos y otros latinos que viven en otros paises sobre la razones en porque no viven en su pais nativo.

Excellent video!! I'm 47 with an 8 year plan so I LOVE hearing people's plan turn into reality. I love hearing numbers, amounts, pricing bc it's rare that people share!! She is hitting the nail on the head with her perspective. The f*cking STRESS is real and when I made my first exploratory visit to merida this past April, all I wanted to do was envision my possible retirement there. Love Amy, I've been following her channel for a while. She such an inspiration. She's the real deal and I hope to meet her once I've made my transition. But I am definitely hearing her when she said buying tomorrow's house today.

Hi (Amy here). Oh my, I bet NYC is stressful. I love it for visiting. Are you considering Mexico? Are there other people in your life that would be part of moving away from NY? I'm intrigued. There are plenty of countries where a person can re-invent their lives. :)

Hi Amy...I love Merida but there is another country that moves me also...Merida is less expensive than the other Country that I was thinking about...The problem is shipping or getting rid of things...I'm a jewelry designer and I have so much material that it would take at least 10 suitcases...that's my bread and butter...I don't make a lot of money cause everything goes to rent...gas... electricity...storage..you name it... I do get close to 1,000 every month but I feel like I have to still have a passive income in order to move to Merida...Im not trying to live above my means Im just looking for my peace...I think that I'm going to do a consultation with Jose and maybe he can suggest something...I just subscribed to your channel if there is anything else that you can think of please reach out...Thank you Amy@@DestinationRetirement

I love Amy’s gorgeous house. Love that beautiful kitchen, bedroom, and living room. Love the colors. I’m 68 years old, with sciatica and rheumatoid arthritis. I wonder if there are good safe places for me with health concerns. How’s the healthcare situation regarding good hospitals? Financially, I’m struggling big time with low social security benefits. I’m trying to get more weight off. I’ve been obese most of my life, but managing to lose it. I never learned to ride a bike. Love being close to the water. My SSA benefits are less than $1400.00 a month. That’s the only money I get. I also like to be close to some entertainment and good food. Is it safe to drink the water? I’ve been to Acapulco back in the 80s and loved it, but got severely sick with “Montezuma’s Revenge”. Not fun. I really worry if I can survive in Chicago or the USA in general, especially as an African American woman Senior Citizen. Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.

Merida is a nice city but it’s oppressively hot for me. I was there 12 years ago and just there again a couple weeks ago. It has definitely gotten hotter. The owner of the small hotel we stayed at said May into June Merida had 40 days of 100+ degrees plus humidity. It is a nice city otherwise but the heat is a deal breaker. I’ll be checking out cooler areas of Mexico.
