Born and raised in Montana from blistering summer to frostbite winters we will stand here till the end

Living in the Flathead Valley for 35 years, I have to say that you have to remember that the maker of this video is a real estate agent. While MUCH more a realistic picture than a lot of the real estate videos on YT, what he is missing in this glorious Montana picture are many of the reasons people leave after one year. There is a serious drug/alcohol problem here, serious domestic abuse problem here, and one of the highest suicide rates in the nation. The lack of sunlight could have something to do with it because i've lived in Seattle, which had the same issues. But if you plan to move here, it's not all majestic mountains and fishing and such. Last year, we had 2 blizzards in the Valley with temps in the -20's. Yes, negative 20. And you still have to plow the driveway, get groceries, and drive to work in this. Don't think coming up here is going to be a cakewalk - you are going to have to find toughness in you that can take long, cold, dark winters - and impending cabin fever. And if you don't already have a job, you will most likely work retail. There are no high paying jobs here. sorry for being a downer - but I'm a realist (and not a real estate agent). If you can manage all of the above, the rewards are great. Just know that Montana isn't ideal for most. Nor an easy place in which to live. There is a reason the 4th largest state in the country has only about 1 million people.

Great points Takara, I've touched on a couple of these but haven't gone deep yet. I am planning a downside of Montana video and I will definitely take your points into account. I want to be fair and paint the whole picture. I love the Flathead Valley by the way. Some of the most beautiful parts of the entire country up there.

Nothing so far that has been mentioned is really unique to just Montana. I love Harris Group Real Estate’s videos…keep them coming! Please share more videos of West Glacier and Flathead Lake areas, please. That’s the areas we considering moving to because we vacation at Glacier almost every year and we have friends on Flathead Lake.

@@HarrisGroupMT For years, Montanans have sneered at out-of-state pundits and journalists who characterized the state as “deep red,” ignoring its century-old purple hue due to a legacy of union activism and general ticket-splitting pragmatism. That changed Tuesday. Red now glows as brightly in Montana as it does in the surrounding states of Idaho, Wyoming, and the Dakotas. Republican Senator Steve Daines fended off a challenge from Governor Steve Bullock to help keep the US Senate in Republican hands. Representative Greg Gianforte (infamous for body-slamming a reporter on the eve of his 2017 special election victory) handily defeated Lieutenant Governor Mike Cooney, ending 16 years of Democratic tenancy of the governor’s office. Matt Rosendale, the Republican state auditor, defeated Democrat Kathleen Williams, who lost to Gianforte when seeking the same seat two years earlier.

The democrats ran some pretty bad candidates in the last election. Don't get cocky. There is still a large population of left leaning people in Montana. This election was a clean sweep. Enjoy it while it lasts without picking fights on a random youtube channel.

We say the same thing here in WA State! Our terrain/landscape/geography is much the same as Montana (except we have the ocean too). Californians moving here bringing their ideologies/politics, etc….they need to stay closer to Seattle and leave our rural areas alone! They are seriously driving up the cost of living here that there’s hardly any affordable housing for first time homebuyers. I live on Whidbey Island and I’m fortunate that my husband and I have federal jobs that afford us an upper middle class income, but so many younger people and military families can’t afford to buy decent homes here.

As a lifelong resident of Montana. It pains me to see it change so rapidly. Although, if newcomers support our way of life, it doesn’t bother me. People moving here because of “Yellowstone” and to play dress up cowboy are the ones that we are upset with. That’s not Montana. Another thing people are upset about are the rising home prices. The infrastructure simply isn’t made to support the influx of people we have had. It’s taken a toll on a lot of native Montanans. This should not be the case. Sure, everyone is entitled to live where they want. That’s the great thing about the US. But it bothers me that many people that have been here their wholes lives are suffering because of a fad. I am currently in college. Many kids in my school are struggling to pay rent due to these skyrocketing real estate prices. It’s sad to see how the quality of life has gone down since the influxes started occurring. So when you hear a Montanan say that “we are full” they aren’t being rude. It’s true, we lower income families and individuals are suffering. If I had any advice for someone looking to move here. Visit! Don’t move here on a whim. This state is harsh, cold, and desolate. Even for an outdoorsman like myself. It still amazes me how brutal Mother Nature can be in Montana.
@HarrisGroupMT2 жыл бұрын
A lot of good insight in your comment. Thank you for sharing. I know it's hard to accept change but honestly, I'm surprised it took so long for Montana to see significant growth. There is a lot more going on than the show Yellowstone that is driving people to Montana. Also, from my experience, the people calling me from out of state curious about moving here are some of the best people that Montanans should be proud to welcome.

But honestly, this is in almost every rural areas of the United States. It’s not unique to Montana. I’m from SE Alabama originally of population of about 780 people (less now). I’ve also lived in Alaska, Maine, Indiana, Florida, and now WA State. I find it amusing reading these comments from Montanans trying to dissuade people from moving to Montana and the things they mention are not truly unique to just Montana. Being from SE Alabama, I’m used to hearing about the rednecks, hillbillies, hicks, racists, etc., but I’ve seen people that could be described these derogatory terms in all of the states I’ve lived in and visited (I only have one state left…Vermont), and it’s not even unique to the United States. The way people in Montana are about bears are the way Alabamians are about snakes. We used to have rhymes to help us remember which snakes were poisonous and which aren’t. I don’t know how I survived my childhood in Alabama with all the snakes and alligators. So glad we don’t have poisonous snakes here in Western WA, but I don’t even like non poisonous. I haven’t seen any snakes in all of my vacations in West Glacier near Polebridge…yet anyway! (We go almost every year).

Young White Patriotic Christian man looking for his people. Originally from California and looking for a new state. There is no future for me here, the anti-american forces have grown too large here. Looking for my real American brothers. Would love to just chat with a like-minded person from Montana.

Billings is the closest I believe. Bozeman doesn't have a Krispy Kreme

Pat is talking about Bigfork Montana. It's a small town up north on Flathead Lake. Bigfoot probably doesn't live too far from there though.

@@HarrisGroupMT no offense but you aren't risking life at all I've had very close encounters with wild bears and multiple charges and any bear that will kiss and hold hands with you isn't anything compared to one charging right at you because she's protecting her cubs
@HarrisGroupMT3 жыл бұрын
Lol. Yes, this wasn't a bear charging me protecting her cubs. I said I am risking my life, not I am killed in this video. A trained bear is still dangerous. Just like when the trained tiger attack Roy Horn of Siegfried & Roy, a traind bear can attack as well. I risked my life by trusting this bear and I am glad everything went smoothly. I have had close encounters with bears in the wild and while this was nothing like that, it was one of the scariest and most amazing things I have ever had the privilege of doing.

It's crazy how some people are so negative. Also, this agency has had a bear break someone's arm and another bear even killed a trainer... sooooo... Not sarcastic. That was the scariest thing I have ever done.

This guy really is a downer. i wonder why a real estate agent in Montana, would be so negative?

Maybe I'm just trying to be honest and not sugar coat it? I love Montana and choose to call it home. I believe it's the best state in the Union. However, I don't only intend to share the good stuff in my videos. I want to paint as accurate of a picture as I can.

No, Montana is freaking amazing! I mean you have Glacier NP, Flathead Lake, and part of Yellowstone. What more do you need? I cannot wait to move to Montana after I retire in 7 years. But it’s not that big of a change for me coming from Western WA (no, not all of us in Western WA are ultra liberal or Democrats).
