This is a very fair assessment. One thing that surprised me as a Kenyan when I was a student in Europe was how cheap butter and cheese were. I realised Kenyans don't consume anywhere near the amount of dairy products as Europeans. On the flip side things such as avocados are very expensive in Europe, while here we let them rot without caring.

We have the capacity and capability of making our own cheese and butter for local consumption, but most of it is exported since Kenyans are not big consumers of the same. I've lived in America for several years and Kenyan cheese and butter are of superior quality.

On the surface of things that is what you would think is the problem with costly African flights but actually African governments impose many taxes on the entire industry driving the cost up. Secondly the economical muscle of most African countries also counts, there is less demand for air travel compared to developed countries because the masses barely make a living. Capitalism is not wishful thinking its supply and demand. No other airline is going to join for the sake of joining without any seeable profit margins in their projections.KQ was given a direct flight from Nairobi to New York and how has that turned out?

And visited Kassala, Tessenei, Agordat, Karen, Asmara and Massawa, riding on the backs of huge open bed lorries going 10mph with Eritrean fighters from the EPLF. There was no currency in the country so everything was shared or bartered. Deeply moving time etched in my memory. I crave going back especially to Asmara. Great video. This is not a critique but a different perspective. I would love if you could highlight the cost of living for the local Nairobians. Expats have been a part of work life for a long time but digital nomads are changing how major cities, like Nairobi, or Lisbon, or Bogota, look. More importantly, how much it costs for the locals. We can agree that it's not a good thing to price out locals but can't keep out the foreign currency either! Where is this going?
@mercyk2672Ай бұрын
Unfortunately thats the way it works. I live in a town in the Southern part of America and once the tech industry brought high paying jobs here, people from wealthy states came and took all the jobs and paid high dollar for houses that used to be affordable to locals. Most locals are really struggling. I moved from Kenya years ago and settled here and can definitely feel the impact. Unless lawmakers intervene, nothing will change.

I visited Kenya in 2018 and Zanzibar in 2024 for a few days, and I feel the need to return for a longer period. There's an important matter I'd like you to cover in a video. Could you please provide information on the legal status of long-term stays in Kenya and Tanzania? How can an individual obtain a residence permit beyond the regular visitor's visa if they wish to settle for a year or two with their family? What are the requirements for such a permit?" Regards.

So true sister. The flight prices are prohibitive by design. Less than one hour flight from Abidjan to Freetown costs almost $2000. Something must be done 😢.
