Curious about the cost of living in Costa Rica? 💵🛒
In this video, I take you through a typical month of food shopping for two in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. From the food we get from the farm we live on to the farmer's markets, supermarkets, and local restaurants, I share our expenses and give you a clear idea of how much it costs for two people to eat mostly local and organic plant-based food.
You’ll see a peek into our garden, where we grow bananas, plantains, cassava, ginger, turmeric, and herbs, plus our visit to a Rasta juice bar and brunch by the beach. Learn how we navigate high costs for imported goods and why we prefer to buy Costa Rican products to support local producers and save money.
If you’re thinking about living abroad in Latin America or just curious about daily life in Costa Rica, this video gives you an inside look at how we try our best to live sustainably while enjoying all that Puerto Viejo has to offer.

Have you considered Walmart delivery? Have you considered pricesmart (Costa Rica Costco) once a month or also delivery?

Hello, no, we don´t have a Pricesmart membership and prefer not to shop at Walmart unless absolutely necessary 🙂

Great info. I'll be in Puerto Viejo in a fortnight for ten nights. I'll be buying a cheap grill for our stay. Can you recommend a carneceria and fish market in the area ? As we arrive on a Tuesday, any farmer's market closer to our arrival ?

@siamiam4306 Glad you found it helpful! For fish, I'd recommend Mopri, which is by the entrance of town across from the bank. But if you're up for an early start, you can try and catch the fishermen as they come back in around 6-6:30am! Finding good quality meat here is a bit trickier. We've found the freshest to be at the Hone Creek Supermarket, but this is one of the main reasons we eat mostly plant based here. The Playa Chiquita farmer's market is on Wed, Fri, and Saturday so that would be the best option. They close at 1pm, so if you can't make it just go to Namu Organika for your organic produce until later in the week. Bread and Chocolate has the best breakfast and desserts in town and check out Tamara for top notch Caribbean dishes like the rundown, aka rondon. Hope you have an amazing time in Puerto! 😊🌴

@@nataliaileana Thanks for the tips. I visited Tamara and it was legit.I asked for fried fish and got served braised. It was still delicious. My cousin suggested La Nena, but it was closed for remodeling when we were there. I never had Ron Don and looking forward to that. As I rented a 2br in Punta Uva, I'm inviting an aunt who does a mean Ella de Carne.I Bbq 3x a week, including now, before the hurricane - I live in FL. I do vanities of chicken and "jerk" doesn't appeal to me., but might try it. We have an outdoor kitchen x street from beach so we'll make the most of it, while going out as well. I travel often to se Asia, and Costa Rica is so much more costly. We can economize on food and just make it ourselves, as I'm not to shabby a cook. Looking forward to fresh Mango and Papaya for breakfast - and encountering Breadfruit again. Thanks, for your response about the markets.

@@nataliaileana Just some personal intel; my mother is Tica and I was forced travel there as a Master during Summer vacay.. I hated it then. When I reached my upper teens and not constrained staying in Cartago at gramp's place, I got to explore, especially when I had an opportunity as a transfer to work there in 93/94. I think I covered all except Corcovado. I did get some Caribbean feel as a youth as my aunt lived in Siquerries while her husband was setting a a communications network. AS I went about, my tico family always mentioned Puerto Viejo. My mother was especially fond and raved about it. At this point last year, I only did the Tortuguero 2 night excursion, and an uncle did give my gf a day excursion to Cahuita. Last year, I finally stayed in PV, and it.s my go-to place moving forward.
