Everything you need to know about San Cristóbal de las Casas!
#SanCristóbal #Mexico #PueblosMagicos
What's it like to live in San Cristóbal de Las Casas? We spent 7 months in San Cristóbal and got to know just about every inch of it. San Cristóbal is located in the southernmost state of Mexico called Chiapas, and is an amazing place for so many reasons. Perhaps this is why it holds the distinguished title of one of Mexico's "Pueblos Mágicos" or Magic Towns.
This is the first in a series of videos we are putting out about San Cristobal and our travels over half a year around Chiapas. Have you been to San Cris? Let us know if you have questions, or drop a comment below and let us know your experience. We also put together a Top 10 video for things to do in the city:

I recently went to Chiapas in December to visit family members. It was my first time going to Chiapas and I loved it so much. I’m a Tzotzil indigenous Mexican-American and when I arrived to Chiapas it was cultural shocking! I stayed in the a small town called Cruztòn (15 minutes away from San Cristobal) and whenever i went to San Cristobal to get food or do a little shopping, I found San Cristobal beautiful and unique. I can’t to go back!

Is it hard to find an apartment in the centro historico area ? Would you have a ballpark of what an average 1 bed 1 bath apartment would rent for on a year lease ? Thx so much! Love your videos !
@OurMillionAdventures
@OurMillionAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Prices really depend on what you are looking for. Getting something downtown in the Centro Historico is going to be harder and you are going to pay more. There are places though. I just looked and saw a few on www.vivanuncios.com.mx/ Prices are all over the board depending on the amenities of the place. Also if you are a foreigner you are very likely going to be charged more regardless of what list prices are. We rented 3 places while staying in San Cristobal and the Lowest we ended up paying per month was around 500 USD for a 3 bed 2 bath with all utilities and Internet included, but it was also nowhere near the center of town. The closest we rented to the Centro was 700 USD a month through Airbnb and was still a 10 min walk away.

@@OurMillionAdventures Wow. I kept hearing from different sources that San Cris was very inexpensive ?
@OurMillionAdventures
@OurMillionAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Inexpensive is all relative I suppose. We saw cheaper places, but definitely not in the Centro. San Cristobal's economy is tourist driven and a lot of expats are moving there as well. This drives up the costs.

@@OurMillionAdventures I guess I was comparing it to La Karencita and the Backpacking Brunette in Queretaro, which I’d heard was one of the pricier cities. They are/were recently paying about $480-$500 for nice apartments in the centro Historico. I’d also seen another youtuber paying $175/mo for a 3/2, in San Cris but likely out farther away from town. Thx...love your videos !

What are your thoughts on the recent incident in San Cris ? From what I understand, armed men were in the Mercado extorting money from the business owners ? ….bullets fired. Looks like police and national guard have things back to normal, but this lasted for 5-7 hours. We are hoping to retire to San Cris within the next 7-9 months. We speak Spanish and have lived in Latin America before….not much scares us off. Should we be worried ? Thx !
@OurMillionAdventures
@OurMillionAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Stuff happens in San Cristobal every so often. There were men running through the streets shooting guns at one point while we were there. They weren't hurting anyone, just sowing fear and panic. Sounds like a very similar situation with what just happened. The crime rate there is actually very low. Lower than where we used to live in the states. Most things that happen are demonstrations against the government. We never felt unsafe there, but we did leave during covid because the devaluation of the peso meant there were alot of angry indigenous people, most of whom didn't understand what was happening. If prices change they immediately blame the government. There are often land disputes in the mountains around San Cristobal and those can get ugly, but you're not likely to ever be in those parts. We have several expat friends that still live in San Cris and love it.
@bananapatch9118
@bananapatch9118 2 жыл бұрын
@@OurMillionAdventures They talk about derechos del pisos, which I think translates to extortion, like going into a business and demanding protection money. Would this be cartel guys ? We really are not scared or worried, just curious to know and understand the situation. Thanks very much !
@OurMillionAdventures
@OurMillionAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
I messaged one of my Mexican friends there and he said they aren't cartels. The way he explained it is that each community has their own group of "community police" so to say. This is consistent with my experience in the communities, I just never knew they were called "Motonetos". The dispute was over one group claiming their right to charge rent to the various venders set up in the market, and another group thinking they owned that portion of the market and had the right to the rent.

It depends on where you are in the city. The closer you are to the Centro the better it is. In the middle of the city you can expect decent speed. When we lived on the outskirts we had 4G cellular internet because they didn't want to install wiring out there. It was NOT 4G, lots of interference and heavily throttled.
