Great video Rod. I watched 300 plus videos including some of yours about the Philippines before coming there for 10 days.Nothing can prepare you for life in the Philippines except for being there and seeing it with your own eyes. The good the bad and the ugly. I am moving there this summer.....

Hello Rod. Enjoy watching your videos while I'm on furlough here in Virginia, USA. I appreciate your "clean" videos of everyday life there in the Phils. Makes me "homesick". My wife is Filipina, and she and my son have moved back to the city she grew up in. She is just west of you living on Negros Occidental. We had an opportunity to purchase a wholesale water purification system along with the house/property the business is situated on. Just need my job back here to pay off the remaining balance. I was supposed to have visited them this April but COVID19 got in the way! Stay safe over there.

I would guess getting used to Philippine time so far is my hardest. Since we lived in the states for 15 years, my wife got used to US time. But since being back she is on Philippine time. So I am getting used to it. For those who may be confused, it just means we will be ready and go someplace sometime, just sit and wait, for everything!

Yes that’s a good point David, that’s one thing that I struggle with when I’m there. Must try harder haha.

Rod, I agree with a lot you have to say. It is a life that you have to get used to. It is not for everyone that is for sure. I have always enjoyed being out in the province. I am not a city guy for sure. I do not try to change the culture and I try to get along with everyone. I have enjoyed each trip back. Although I have to work yet, the Philippines is my home now. I have no desire to go anywhere else. I have found it in all my travels if you present a friendly attitude, you will usually get one in return. I really like the laid back spirit in the Philippines. After spending my time here, it is good to be around people that aren't all stressed out. There are just not that many foreigners around where we live. One reason I like doing my youtube is the conversations I can carry on here with those that comment on my videos or when I comment on someone else's. I have a few good friends here on KZbin. Investing is a gamblers paradise. You got to know when to hold them, know when to fold them! Know when to walk away and know when to run! We are in the typhoon alley. That is the bad part. The good is that most storms will weaken some prior to hitting us. We did not have much wind with the storms this year, but the rain was continuous. NPA are involved in our area. We hear about skirmishes from time to time. These are mostly in the mountains down below us and do not affect us so bad. I sure hope that immigrations laws will not change. I am not sure how I would be able to get the visa each time I would like to come home. I make this trip quite often, so it would make it a little more difficult for me if this took place. Keeping an open mind is the key to surviving the Philippines. If you come expecting paradise on earth without any pitfalls, you will not last long. Good video. Hope you continue to enjoy your time.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and story Steve. I was wondering about you and your family each time a typhoon comes through your area. Hi Rod hope all is well with you? This is a very good overview of life in the Phils, you have a knack of describing things accurately without it sounding negative, which is easy to mistakenly do when describing ones opinion of Filipino life and the people. As for "Conmen', we met the odd one during our residency there, unreal that they went to the trouble of ripping us off , for not a lot of money, but i guess thats how they operate, by conning several different people at the same time and lying about themselves to impress us. All done with a smiling, friendly, outgoing , nothings any problem, disposition, to gain ones confidence. Having said that Rod, there are alot of decent, honest guys there including yourself.

I enjoy your videos immensely, I have been here 10 years and have learned to accept most of the bruises and bumps in the road, that are encountered here, like the electrical which I am sure of is caused by lack of training by the companies, it is not the workers fault but rather the greedy owners, another peeve of mine is Pldt and their lack of consistency in service, but once again the cause is not knowing how to correct things correctly. But as a semi-long time resident, I see a marked improvement in the level of service. The driving will never change I am afraid. Makes life interesting

William, In addition to poor training, another cause is probably the antiquated technology that's expected to handle a demand it was designed. The videos I've seen of the driving makes me rethink my plan to purchase a new vehicle after arrival. Daniel
@daspicer1
@daspicer1 5 жыл бұрын
@@danielmurphy1100 I drove for about 7 years here, and it's not as bad as it looks once you learn the ropes. I now take a taxi or a Grab (Uber). I, of course, live where that's available and I know for a fact that it's cheaper and easier than vehicle ownership. I was basically paying only for the convenience and I won't likely buy another vehicle unless it's necessary. I would not recommend buying a vehicle here right after arrival. I was here 6 or 8 months before I bought one, and I had a basic idea of how everything worked. It was fun for a while, and then it got old.

Hello Sir, Thank you very much for your all videos as they're pretty much informative and useful for people who are interested in the Philippines as a country and as a society! This is the first time I'm writing some sentences here, although I'm following your chanal in some years! I'm a Danish citizen living in Copenhagen, I have been in Phil many times before and I'll soon visiting Davao city and stay there in 3 weeks... I'm very interested in the Philippines and I wish one day I afford living there for the rest of my life! Unfortunately, I have to work for the next 10 years until I get retired as the retirement here begins from the age of 67 years! I'm single, I know there are many sweet ladies out there in Phil but still didn't find the suitable one! Many times I try to remind myself of this proverb which says "Your neighbor's grass is NOT greener!!"... Many things are going smoother here in Denmark compared with many other countries in the world but still thinking of a sort of life in the Philippines! We know all that there are plus and minus regarding different parts of life circumstances all over the world, it's, therefore, depends on what you prefer and what is more important for you! Regarding the "Corona decease" in China, wish the authorities there chose to be more open about the situation from the beginning and asked for assistance from all countries instead of keeping all out!! The situation is bad in China and I'm afraid it gets much worse than expected!

Cebu is the best city with myriad new shopping spots sprouting everywhere, especially Mandaue City. Mandani Bay, GateWalk Central, SeaGrove and NewTown. It has the World's 8th biggest shopping mall too, SM Seaside. To name just a few. There will be monorail and Mass Transit Railway soon. Companies from Dubai and Thailand are building their new hotels, resorts, casinos and high-end luxurious condominiums. It is a lovely place with cultural diversity. It has a lot of Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, Americans and some Germans. Its food variety is a welcomed addition too. Of course, its local Filipino people are very nice people who mostly are of Catholic. I would say that if someone loves learning, he or she will love any peaceful and fun place that he or she visits. If someone does not love learning, no matter which place he or she ends up in, he or she will never love it. BTW, some parts of Cebu City looks much better than American cities already. I love the tropical weather there. It is lovely. Can't wait to go back to swim at their white sand beaches, and observe wharf sharks, sardines rush and water cruise of sea turtles. Oh, and its coral reef .... so speechlessly beautiful. What a lovely place to be!

Good video Rod. Long video but I will try to comment on what stuck with me. Narrow tire bikes are not good for trails, you need something like a Yamaha TW200, rear tire like a car tire and the 18 inch front tire is like a dirtbike's rear tire. Sadly, I don't think TW200's are imported here. Even a Serrow 250 would be better for trails. I try to spend 10 months out of the year here. I keep my apartment and my assistants year round. I'm not moving immediately as an issue came up with my fiance over driving lessons that she asked for in my L300. She wasn't listening. I would tell her something in a conversational voice, she wouldn't react, I would speak slowly and louder, she still isn't paying attention, I would raise my voice as the information I'm trying to impart is to prevent a motor vehicle accident. She decided to quit because I raised my voice the third time, to prevent an accident. I told her fine, get all your stuff when we get to the apartment because I don't want you to come back with the excuse you forgot something. We are back together, but I told her that a second chance means we went back to Zero. So she is back to GF and maybe in another year, might become fiancee again. Driving lessons continue. I don't think the Philippines will change Visas for US. It would hurt them too bad. Duterte would have done it years ago if that weren't so. Frankly there are about 2 million undocumented Filipinos in the US and if the Philippines wanted to play hardball? It might make their family reunions more complete. Think long and hard about making recurring payments or gifts to anyone. Help should be targeted not general, especially if you have limited funds. Try to make any help real help, not just kicking the can down the road because if you help twice with the same thing? It will be expected the next time also. I don't see that many non Filipinos. By and large, I consider that a good thing. I'm not fond of Filipinos calling foreigners, Losers at home, but sometimes it fits. From hearing of people who lost it all in the Philippines? It's the ones who either gave it all to a Filipino, or were scammed by a foreigner. Most shady Filipinos I have met want to part you from some money, but usually they aren't trying to get you to liquidate everything you have. Look on the Living in Cebu Forum, especially the V8 (brand) motorcycle fiasco or the Rural banks pyramid scheme. People knew it was a pyramid, but were telling others to do it just so it would take longer to collapse and they figured they could get out because they were looking for the cracks. Good video Rod.

Thanks Robert. We didn't know we would be taking a rough trail when we rented the bike but I don't like those narrow tires even on the street. I think Rod has the most well balanced views on the Philippines, he just tells it as it is. For me, what I like the most is the people, and a feeling of being very comfortable around them. I also think Rod has some good reviews on food and health for westerners in the Phils, I have taken onboard his advice for Tumeric and apple vinegar, surely it cannot do any harm. If you lisen you will pick up bits and pieces of advice. Its nice to see the Phils through another persons eyes, totally neutral and totally unbiased. Best advice, look after your money, actualy filinos are very honest, its westerners being daft. Also have a plan B to get home. I would also like to say, have an interest/hobby while there. For me its growing stuff and learnt things I have brought back here. I like seeing there little farms and gardens, I have a little business just for fun, anything to keep busy. My only critique of the Phils is the food, its pretty dreadful, firstly hygiene and 2nd its covered in salt, sugar, MSG, burnt garlic and of course lots of soya sauce. It dosnt bother me cos there is lots of other options, but don't expect a great food experience. Thai food is incredible, but that's not the Phils. I think Rod can explain it better than me, and I am still learning how to survive on Phil food after 30 years of visiting. I love the Phils, its becoming more difficult to visit, its not cheap like before, but well worth a visit. Great vlog, really enjoyed it.

When we were married 30 years ago in Cebu City I had a difficult time convincing my wife to move to the USA. She finally agreed only after I promised that we would return for vacation every 3 years and ultimately move back to her home province (i.e. Libertad, Bogo) after my retirement. However, after numerous trips to Cebu, I found that it eventually became difficult to enjoy all of the many wonders of the Philippines while ignoring the extreme poverty. Each trip we would distribute 2 to 3 thousand USD trying to help those who truly needed help. However, no matter how much we gave, it was never enough. After watching your videos, I am tempted to reconsider moving to Cebu since the cost of living there will allow my limited retirement funds to stretch further. We will have to keep our location a secret so that we do not become the family ATM.

I was fortunate to be introduced to an awesome 35-year-old woman here on Cebu, as well as her wonderful family, a year before I made my planned move. I married her shortly after moving here and they all made my transition to the Philippines nearly effortless. It hasn't all been a bed of roses but I would do it again in a heartbeat. Although residing on Cebu wasn't part of my original plan, either was a wife and a child. I now can't imagine living anywhere else. Edit: By Cebu, I mean Metro Cebu. But when I moved here Metro Cebu was much smaller than it is today; they moved the boundaries. If I can't get a taxi, I'm too far out 😎

Rod, Thank you for sharing the video. After watching these videos for about a month now and never actually being in the Philippines, I far from being an expert. I did however, serve on active duty and was deployed multiple times which qualifies me to say that "I can live anywhere." One thing that baffles me about some of the vloggers is the overuse of the phrase "Western style amenities". Why do you go to a foreign country and want same things as the frigging place you just left!!! They also want to live in a place where they're "aren't a lot of foreigners". They're the foreigner! I guess they want to be the first white man a Philipino has ever seen -not! Anywho, Rod how do the utilities work Do you have to initiate service when you move in/ open an account with the local utility and the same goes for water. It goes without saying that you would initiate cable television and internet services. As far as the phone goes, could I use an "American" I Phone there. I imagine there's some sort of Sim card for the local service. I had I've learned that I could finish my education through the Dept. Of Veterans Affairs there. So, another box checked. I'm just going to show up at Macatan - Cebu and go up to the information desk and ask "Where's Rod?"
@AmazingPhilippines1
@AmazingPhilippines1 5 жыл бұрын
LOL. Thanks Daniel. I understand what you are saying. Some want more "western" style than others who are quite happy in the provinces. I prefer for the landlord where I rent to provide the service so I don't need to have a contract but that isn't always possible and you have to go to the various offices to get set up. It might take 2 weeks to get service. I will do a more in depth video soon. A sim card from one of the 3 cell companies and "load" credit on prepaid plans will get your SS phone working if it is unlocked from your carrier and on the GSM network.

Danial, my Philippines research began in late 2004 as far as a possible place to retire. I had never been there, I'm retired Army, and I can live anywhere was (and still is) my attitude. A year later I had made my decision and was going to move in early 2007, which I did. But about that time I was getting mixed responses about my decision. The military retirees here were telling me, come on over, you'll love it. And everyone else was telling me to visit first, the Philippines is not for everyone. That sounded reasonable to me so I visited. Within just 2 or 3 days here my plans were written in stone. I was definitely moving.

I don't believe the PNP are reluctant to issue traffic citations out of fear. It is just considered rude. Police in the provinces are not proactive as they may be in the states. They are not looking for a problem. They reflect the societal attitude that conflicts should be smoothed over, not incited or escalated. A police checkpoint in the provinces is not really intended to capture anyone. Drivers without license or registration freely turn around right before the checkpoint. They are just a reminder for everyone to think about getting their vehicles and paperwork in order. For minor crimes (like a cellphone theft) the police will hold the offender in custody for the day or so and encourage the victim to let the matter go (with the return of the item and time served, so to speak). Nobody wants the court system to get involved because it is not designed for minor things. My wife was all scraped up when hit by another motorcycle drive (unlicensed, uninsured and unregistered). The police had the driver in custody. Now what? You can't get blood from a rock. The driver felt bad about it. We told the police to hold him a couple hours more and we were okay with that. I then went out and bought my wife a car with automatic. That is about all you can do. Protect yourself. That is what 12 years in the provinces has taught me.

President Trump is anti-immigrant. Unless you are American Indian, you are an immigrant in the USA. Immigrants are what made the US the great country it once was. Now, I feel the US is in a long slow decline. I am moving to the Philippines because it is s difficult to bring my fiancée to the USA; not to mention that you cannot live on your pension in the USA. In the Philippines, I can live very comfortable on my pension. Health care costs in the USA have spiraled out of control. Amazing Philippines: It’s the same here too. We are out of face masks here in some places. People have been buying a lot of them to make a little bit of profit in China. It’s kind of selfish to be honest.
