It’s refreshing to see a non patronising documentary that has the residents at the centre of attention. It’s neither trying to portray everything as perfect or noble when it’s not, nor is it portraying the area and it’s people as the underclass to make viewers feel better about their lot in life in comparison

The happiest people are the ones in the most pain. Believe me I know mental health. At the peak of my depression I came across as the happiest to people. Something needs to be done to help these areas of UK. The filthy scummy government have left true areas of UK to rot and wither. We need to band together and bring it back to how it was.
@RachelPash2 ай бұрын
I can absolutely assure you, they're not happy. It's a very British mentality to look at bad things like 'well, you gotta laugh, ain't ya?' Smiles do not equal happiness. These people are poor, living in filth, deprived and forgotten by society. There's high crime and low opportunity there. This is, and I cannot stress this enough, absolutely not the 'happiest place to live'. You wouldn't last five minutes there.

During the 60s I had an Aunt and Uncle who made their first home together in Jaywick Sands (Riley Avenue). I was a kid then (born in 1956). I loved having holidays there, our family would rent a little holiday home nearby (one week Butlin's and one week in Jaywick). There was no inside toilets back then....or plumbed water. The alleys were for the night soil men to access the toilets to remove the waste in the early hours of the morning. Water came from a standpipe in the street. Every property was well kept and painted every year. My aunts was blue and white, next door was maroon and cream. Life was simple. I learned the name of the little streets (all named after car manufacturers of the dayl. Alvis, Bentley, Riley Wolesley (that sort of thing). Brooklands had a big green in the middle and shops and amusements. First time I had milk in a triangular tetra pack (well before plastic bottles). My father would swim every day from Jaywick to Clacton and back. So many happy memories. It was heartbreaking to see the decline when Butlin's closed. 💖

Simon, I love seeing how you don't come into a place with judgment even when people all around you (and in the comments...) telling you how awful/depressing/dangerous a place is and, because of it, your attitude gets others in the community to open up to you and want to share their lives. Jaywick may be impoverished, may have issues with addiction, etc. but I also see people who are more humble, more genuine and still holding on to the sense of community lost across the globe in major cities. Hell, even in your comments you see so much nasty and judgmental comments about Danny (He's annoying! He's on crack!) when, in reality, Danny is spending each day checking on people, holding positivity meetings, creating signs/brochures to help the community and brainstorming ideas with residents to make changes...that's far more than the average person does for their own neighborhoods.

Went to Jaywick for our Annual Family Holiday many times in the 1970s, as it was all that our Parents could afford. Even back then, when it was a holiday resort, it was classed as a deprived area. Accommodation around Brooklands wasn’t connected to the Sewer System, so we had to use a bucket in the yard, which was emptied weekly. I now get told by Younger generations that I’ve had privilege all my life, just cos I worked hard, saved money and ultimately bought a house! They also moan that they can’t afford to pay for the 4 week trek around South America they had planned. They should book a 2 week break in Jaywick instead. Shine on!

A man in good spirits! Credit to that Brazilian woman as well - she loves the place! What are the odds

Danny has just made me wanna move to Jaywick and be his mate. Honestly the whole video feels like it is part of a GTA expansion map. New characters keep appearing and Simon was like the main character and Danny the boss

this is sad, i spent a lot of my time in Jaywick in the summer, staying with my grandparents, i loved it, the beach was clean and lovely, all the small houses were immaculate, it's sad to see how it looks now

I went there once delivering panelling. Couldn't believe how run down it was. I found the house and started passing the panels to the customer and he leant them against the fencing. The neighbour came out pushed them to the ground saying that was his fence. My customer flattened him with a right hook and carried on as if nothing happened. Never had a delivery like that before or since.

I remember Danny back in the day from the Channel 5 documentary! Glad to see he’s still doing his positive work and striving for a better Jaywick! I can only ever wish the best for the community there. I’ve only ever seen video footage but it’s always been clearly full of the most amazing and wonderful people. G-d bless you all!

anyone notice he said crinimal? 😂😂
@shaun24632 ай бұрын
He said it a couple times and when he said "animal" he struggled and said "amnimal". Probably just a speech thing. He seems like a better and happier person than someone who would point this out and laugh at it on the Internet though 🤷♂

Yep, and that's one of the fine things about him. Also noticed that he went to prison 8 times, then turned his life around, and is amazingly positive 👍

it may be classed as a deprived town but it has Character with the personality of Danny still seeing the good side of the town from the past ,many people dont see the community in areas like Jatwick , but its how things were many years back which is lost now ,this was a breath of fresh to watch reminded me how important it is to try and be happy even though things can be tough in life ...SHINE ON...
