In oil-rich Venezuela, people don't have enough to eat, infant mortality is soaring at a faster rate than in Syria, and according to the UN, some three million people have fled the country since 2015. Once Latin America's richest nation, Venezuela and its people are suffering from the ravages of hyperinflation.
On January 23, the leader of the legislature, Juan Guaido, began a push to remove current President Nicolas Maduro by declaring himself interim president. The United States has imposed an embargo on Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA, with sanctions aimed at transferring control of Venezuela's oil wealth to those opposing Maduro.
So what is it like to live in one of the world's worst economies? How did a country with the world's biggest oil reserves end up so impoverished and bankrupt? And how will US sanctions affect the nation?
Describing the living situation on the ground, Jairo Lugo-Ocando, director of executive education and graduate studies at Northwestern University in Qatar, explains "It (life) is very difficult at the moment. My own sister is living with a salary of $10 a month as a teacher."
"I was there last year and I could see thousands of people crossing the border. People on a basic salary cannot buy basic food. They depend on the staples provided by the government, which do not reach the majority of the population."
Lugo-Ocando says "there's a dramatic situation. Hospitals have collapsed; over 22,000 doctors have left the country since 2015. Cancer mortality rate has risen because there's no chemotherapy treatment available and the entire situation goes down to the mismanagement of the economy and political turmoil."
Unlike former leader Hugo Chavez's charisma and connection with the people, "Maduro doesn't have that connection with the people, or charisma," explains Lugo-Ocando. "He also doesn't have the money. The price of oil has gone down from $112 a barrel just to over $60, and that represents a huge dramatic drop in the coffers of government. On top of that, the government has indebted itself."
"Obviously, the poor people are the most affected because they cannot reach the basics, but the crisis is also affecting the middle class."
Venezuela's assets
The Orinoco Belt holds one of the world's largest reserves of heavy crude oil and oil accounts for 98 percent of Venezuela's foreign earnings.
US sanctions on Venezuela's oil sector are "a game changer," according to Diego Moya-Ocampos, principle analyst at IHS Markit. "It will make it very difficult for the government of Maduro to get access to oil sale profits and this will accelerate pressure on him to step down."
He says "the reason why Venezuela's economy is in such a dire state is because of widespread corruption and epic mismanagement by government officials. Some of these assets have been laundered in different places, like the Carribean, in the US and in some Latin American countries."
"At the moment, it's difficult to precisely know the location of these assets and who, from Maduro's top men, has been operating them. What's clear, is the national assembly in Venezuela, which is controlled by the opposition, and is the only legitimate democratically elected institution in the country, has legislated to establish the necessary mechanism so that these assets can be frozen abroad and be channelled to the administration of Juan Guaido ... this is the first step in trying to get control of these assets."
But oil is not the only resource in Venezuela. The country claims to have the world's fourth-largest gold mine. There were reports this week that President Maduro is getting ready to ship 20 tonnes of gold out of the country. The bank of England has blocked Maduro's officials from withdrawing $1.2bn worth of gold being stored in its vaults.
Thus far Guaido has the support of the US, many European countries and Latin American countries. On the other hand, both China and Russia are standing by Maduro.
Also on this episode of Counting the Cost:
Brazil Vale: It's being called the most hated company in Brazil. Vale, the world's number one iron ore producer, is being held to account for its role in a dam collapse, an industrial accident which has devasted a local mining community. It is feared that more than 300 people could have died buried under tonnes of toxic sludge. And there's growing anger because this is the second time in five years that Vale's mining waste has devasted the local environment, as Daniel Schweimler reports from Brumadinho.

Hugo Chávez was the root cause of Venezuela's problems. He sacrificed their manufacturing and farming industries in favor of oil, and then based his expenditures on the presumption that oil prices would remain high. When the price of oil collapsed so did the economy. He should have at least taken economics 101 - That would have told him not to put all his eggs in one basket.

Mr De Zayas, a former secretary of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) and an expert in international law, spoke to The Independent following the presentation of his Venezuela report to the HRC in September. He said that since its presentation the report has been ignored by the UN and has not sparked the public debate he believes it deserves. On his fact-finding mission to the country in late 2017, he found internal overdependence on oil, poor governance and corruption had hit the Venezuelan economy hard, but said “economic warfare” practised by the US, EU and Canada are significant factors in the economic crisis. In the report, Mr de Zayas recommended, among other actions, that the International Criminal Court investigate economic sanctions against Venezuela as possible crimes against humanity under Article 7 of the Rome Statute. The US sanctions are illegal under international law because they were not endorsed by the UN Security Council, Mr de Zayas, an expert on international law and a former senior lawyer with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said. “Modern-day economic sanctions and blockades are comparable with medieval sieges of towns. “Twenty-first century sanctions attempt to bring not just a town, but sovereign countries to their knees,” Mr de Zayas said in his report. Al Jazeera has became a mouth piece of Washington after Qatar was sanctioned by Saudi, an ally of US.

I am surprised at conclusions reached by some here and with their comments. This issue in Venezuela has happened for a long time now, yet the most important thing not to ignore is where will new jobs come from? Preparation. After this...will those same providers of new jobs in Venezuela be able to compete with others that do not have to pay for labor because of reasons...such as automation? Oil and unskilled labor is not in big demand as it once was. Someone wants unskilled labor in Venezuela now? ...as opposed to before? Some wants oil now? ...as opposed to sacking Venezuela for it before? This is where the real slavery will begin...with jobs that will disappear to automation and lack of demand for such...and this would happen literally overnight...right before the bottom completely drops out of the economy of Venezuela. Hopefully, if Mexico delivers as promised with border support, they will be offered JOBS that (many of which) COULD HAVE gone to automation ...but instead go to Mexico (or perhaps only Canada) by way of new USMCA deals. This will help spread out the wealth and also make more harmonious the wages from one neighboring country to the next. So selfish are the wealthy that provide jobs that come out of their own pockets for no other reason than to keep more mouths fed? Please. How insulting. Where job availability is lacking in some countries...what can possibly be offered by these countries to Venezuela but lower wages than their own employees get....and a quick carpet-bagging of money off cheap labor that will disappear like the sunshine when the rain comes....after they have pocketed their loot. Pompeo calls for taking sides only to help others see that some western countries do not wished being blamed for the fall of another country...so pulling out time might seem much more logical so those screaming most can experience for themselves who is really to blame for their consequences. The issue is simply automation, lack of good business management and government ineptitude, and greed with lack of preparation for economic stability by leadership, but mostly it is interference by those economies desperate and also on the brink of becoming like Venezuela very soon.

Because Maduro mortgaged the Venezuelan economy to the point Venezuela could not pay its debt back to even Venezuelan's friends. And then Maduro decided to print so much money it became worthless. Maduro is just a Moron who thinks he is an economic genius. It's all his fault that the promise of a socialist revolution / utopia failed. You know what he did with all the technocrats ? He Exiled them, Assassinated them or Jailed them. How can any country be managed without intellectuals and technocrats ? All past socialist countries have historically made the same mistake. The ones that have survive so far have learned that you cannot discard the countries technocrats and intellectual capital. In any case what Moron thinks that printing money is a good idea. Venezuela is not the worst economy in the world. This is what many Central and Latin American countries have experienced as the results of America's imperialism, its Monroe Doctrine. Likewise the same for many American citizens who are suffering as the people of so-called poor economies. America is wrought with increasing homelessness and its citizens living paycheck to paycheck with high medical debt. It is no different than the theft of a country's natural resources as seen on the continent of Africa. They people also do not benefit given theft of their natural resources is a theft of their wealth and income. The only ones who benefit are the thieving companies of the colonizing imperialistic invading countries. This includes the theft of the natural resources called oil, natural gas and coal.

Welfare/social state does not mean socialism. Socialism is based on people (meaning government) owning the means of production and distributing the profits to people. hey you showed us a few closed shops but i notice when you start to talk at 2 minutes and 39 second there is shops are opens on both side, another fake fabricated news by al jazeera, remember when saudi arabia and the other golf state imposed economic sanction on Qatar who fund al jazeera if Qatar didn't have the USA military bases what would happen to Qatar and because Qatar turned to Iran and Turkey who both have very bad relations with the Gulf league ( Saudi arabia, United arab emirates, bahrain, kuwait, and Egypt) the economy of Qatar would collapsed even it have the largest Natural Gas reserve in the world, so please enough with your fake news stories

Reading "this is socialism" comments by my fellow Americans who have no idea how our economy works is sooo disturbing. Our economy is entirely hypothetical, a huge chunk of our GDP is actually the debt accrued by Americans and owned by corporations, not actual production. Our economy is basically only being held up by the fact that the bankers will keep milking this form of "production" as long as its profitable.
