Why "Living Like A.."?:
Living Like A Hawaiian is a project that is directly inspired by Living Like a Palauan, a 28 minute cultural project diving into the people of Palau and their beloved culture. And this was inspired by Living Like A Tonga, a project named such due to the conversation with my host, "What do you want Anthony?" "I want to live like you, I want to Live Like A Tongan".
Living Like A Hawaiian is a deeper more expansive voyage into Kanaka Maoli in two parts, Part one showing the beautiful rich culture and heritage of Kanaka Maoli. And Part two, the devastation consequences of development, colonization, and over tourism that has had devastating effects on Native Hawaiians.
This is and was a very difficult and very emotional project to weave together. From both a technical and creator standpoint to a heart breaking standpoint of how painful the narratives and visuals are. Making this project had me cry, break down, and nearly give up because of the mental hurt it was to build. But it is here, alive, and published for the world to see what the real Hawaii looks like. What aloha aina really means and for the world to trully see what is HAWAII, through the lens and narrative directly from the source: Kanaka Maoli
Gratitude & Acknowledgement:
Just want to take the time to show my utmost gratitude to everyone involved in this project. Be it the Kanaka I interviewed, those who donated footage, to those who guided me in showing accurate cultural knowledge, translation help, to those who donated to this self funded initiative. I am grateful to all of you. But especially grateful to my Kumu and Shannon Kamaehuahunui for allowing me to come into this world as the 1% in paving the way for this curious voyager for the bigger picture that is "One Ocean, One People", and respectful travel in cultural spaces.

I am Hawaiian and was adopted by a military husband and wife. Fortunately my adopted mother wanted me to know my culture. Today I’m 76 years old. My Parents were transferred to the mainland when I was 4 years old. I am Hawaiian. I was able to send my grandchildren to University of Hawaii, Manoa. Last year my first great grand child was brought to Hawaii to be baptized, as. I was, in a local church. I hope my family will never forget their heritage, learn all they can and remember that we all are family and to hold dear the islands, the rivers and oceans. Please May we become sovereign one day.

I'm just a mainland American who has never visited Hawaii because I know I will be ripped to shreds by seeing the vapid western lifestyle be lived in such a heaven on earth. May the indigenous people gain all their islands back and kick the navy out along with all those who came seeking surfing and coconuts, ignorant that everything was stolen at gun point.

Brah... This one hurts. I've been on the continent for 10 years now. I have truly seen my island home change and I don't see it for the better. Then aunty said, "How you help us fight if you leave?" That well and truly broke me. I left because I just couldn't afford to be kanaka in Hawaii. What I went to school for isn't paid enough for me to survive comfortably there. So what am I supposed to do now? The plan was always to make my money and then go home and help my family. Everyday though, things get harder. People are getting harder. If I could, I would go work a lo'i if it meant that could still afford to. The Western world has affected so many of us. Wants and needs are hard to fight against when all we need is a proper ecosystem to live in. Recently someone mentioned to me that, "Hawaiians on the mainland are sometimes more Hawaiian than the ones still at home." The belief that, we took with us the Hawaii we remember and spread that culture to those we know and love. On the other side of it, we have our kanaka trying to maintain what once was and becoming much more angry about it in the process. What are we supposed to do though? We all can't just go home. We all can't just kick the Haole people out. If we remove ourselves from America, who's going to fight against the next set of invaders to our strategic land? Besides financially, the only other benefit American sees in Hawaii is it's strategic position in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I hate the truth but the truth is there. So I'm here torn and conflicted with this whole thing. So congrats, you did something beautiful and broke my heart but I'm not mad at you about it. I'm mad at myself for not knowing what the next day brings for my soul. 🤙

"Everyday though, things get harder. People are getting harder. " I'm inspired by Anthony leaning into the creation of this work despite his own personal difficulties. I discovered him recently and was amazed by how small his channel was given the qualities of his work. I signed up to his Patreon without realizing that I was essentially his first contributor. Since then, I've been leaning into his content, learning from him. I guess I want to respond to the idea of things getting harder and people getting harder. Not all of us are getting harder, some of us are getting softer and gentler. But then, I'm 66 and had a good career and a stable life that involved years of retirement savings. I live with people who are struggling and lean into figuring out ways that we can be together in a good way.

"Wants and needs are hard to fight against when all we need is a proper ecosystem to live in. " - for me, I helped to found an intentional community near Seattle. I choose to help create a proper ecosystem to live in - one where people choose to share their lives and help each other in countless ways. This created a better life for my family in the midst of a world that constantly pushes wants and needs that are just not what I wanted or needed.

"I'm mad at myself for not knowing what the next day brings for my soul. " I share this madness. I'm frustrated that I've not done more than what I've done with my life. But in this frustration comes some clarity. Right now, I'm just grateful about what Anthony's work has reminded me about my capacity to change.

Aloha no kaua! Firstly i mahalo you for sharing your mo’olelo and mana’o on , well everything. It’s so much easier said than done to just up and go back. Hence why I put diaspora because their journey is harder as they aren’t “Hawaiian enough” and still gotta find the way to survive and connect to the islands. So many have left because the socioeconomic conditions are god awful. I mean just to be in Hawai’i, live, to meet all of these Hawaiians was like death. I worked three jobs not including content creation for this and felt like I was dying. I can’t imagine being KANAKA and having two choices. Stay and fight, or go. So I truly under why kanaka leave because it becomes too unbearable. While my project wasn’t a means to FIX anything as I alone can’t do that. I hope it’s raised awareness for all non kanaka, to realize see the consequences of simply going! Sending tons of alofas from American Samoa as I traverse oceania for more stories!

I was so deeply touched and moved by this film. I was going to write something in the comments sooner (I watched it yesterday) but could not. That's because it deserves a well thought out response. I found you in a very serendipitous, albeit round about, way. I am subscribed to Peter Santinello's podcast. He's in the midst of a 7-part series on Hawaii. In this most recent on that came out yesterday (5/25/24), he spent a lot of time with Elijah. KZbin's algorithm's sent me Hawaii podcasts after that. That is how I found yours. I really appreciate all that I learned about the history of Hawaii. And, the languages. Sound has energy and vibration. It just sounds soothing to hear it, even though I don't know it. It was wonderful to hear everyones' stories. I love how you didn't just gloss over them with quick sound bytes. You explored each person more deeply. Your own responses to everything were also deeply moving to me. I was awestruck afterwards and felt the impact of your film for a quite a while. I am so glad you created this gem. Thank you for offering it to us all. I am not Hawaiian and have only visited once. However, I felt this story to my core. If I ever go back to Hawaii, I will carry all of this in my heart. Thank you again so much.

Have to limit myself when it comes to Hawaii content as it's so heartbreaking to face what white men have done to every native culture they encountered and conquered and the lands they stole & polluted. Part of my past and my soul belongs to Hawaii and will forever. Have considered going back, but like those in this video, I can't afford to live there. I last returned 35 years ago and it was very difficult & emotional for me. Not sure if I could handle it again. Thank you for giving the local Hawaiians respect. It's amazing after so many years of disrespect they can even tolerate looking at haoles. I wish them a kinder future.

R u genetically connected or just spiritually drawn? Very much curious. Because YOU Sir, HAVE NAILED IT. Aloha nui Ronda! Love this comment and mahalo you for taking the time to ask questions and express all the beautiful words you have for the work I’ve done in this project. To be brief I’m originally from New York area with Puerto Rican and Dominican heritage. My love for oceania began when I first visited Hawai’i in 2017. But especially so when i travel Aotearoa to Tonga, Fiji Tuvalu, Kiribati in 2018. And 2022 to Palau where I noted the beautiful similarities across the vast pacific. I guess it’s a spiritual connect and a cultural connection, especially so as a Hispanic. But my time with kanaka was very personal because I got grounded with them through covid which got me into hula , opening the door to everything else. And by the time the pacific reopened, I was Hawaiian by heart full of kanaka values that are now carrying me around oceania with those values. That’s the best way I can summarize me and my time with kanaka beyond this film and hope it all makes sense. Please, any word out and sharing of this film will mot only support the awareness and truth for kanaka. But helps support my Oceania initiatives with One Ocean, One People🫶🏽

I agree 💯!! I lived Notth Shore Oahu & programmed an AM radio station. I got very into Hawaii & the sovereignty movement. After a lot of military back lash for my advocacy for the return of Kokoholawe to the Hawaiian people! But clean it up and put in infrastructure. Then get the hell out of the way. Very long story short, I was beaten by two Military type white guys, one evening as I came out the back door of the radio station. Followed by the owner calling me in for backlash from advertisers. I went to Corpus Christi. Moved back to Oahu 1990 to 2001. I love Hawaiian people and their islands. I pray to return to say " Aloha" when I left I thot I'd be back in one year.... life and money. I feel those tears... I know that heart pain.... you are now and always will be kamahina. You'll go back. I have to in order to get my heart & body in the same place. Excellent work from an old radio man.🤙🏼✌️🙏🏻

Thank you for this video. I am over here on the mainland Los Angeles, California. I just left the big island of Hawaii to check check on my property or should I say home in the part called HPP. One day I will move to the big island of Hawaii because everyone is so nice over there and I would say nice to me. I’ve never had any trouble over there with any of the locals everybody is so nice compared to the people in the mainland everybody over here and I’m not saying everybody but a lot of people are a bunch of assholes and all the reckless toxic behaviors over on the mainland so the sad part is I’m back at home here in Los Angeles and I cannot wait to get the hell out of here again which will be soon. I love Hawaii and I will say thank you for this video. Thank you. I hope this makes sense because I’m talking into my phone and have a lot to say but only can put so much in the comment section. Thank you, Mahalo.

Preserve and advance your culture. If the authorities stand in your way, become the authorities. Be the politicians and control your own lands yourselves. I'm English, living in England. It distresses me greatly to see how the culture I grew up with has become diluted, displaced. I'm now forced to feel ashamed of my own culture and my own identity but there's nothing I can do. The system that allowed this to happen is too entrenched, with total control over everything. I weep for my country.

I'd feel remiss to not opine on what I see as a through-line of this story. What separates traditional Kānaka Maoli livelihoods from haole capitalist ways is prefigured by the inherent difference and indeed antagonism between the two respective worldviews. The former is obviously steeped in sustainable methods for living; whereas the latter is well-known for its accumulative and exploitive methods. Two aspects of this that were more intimated than actually stated in this fine presentation: Higher quantity of energy production/consumption correlates with the oppression of other people choosing less energy production/consumption/complexity/acceleration, and so on. Another stark contrast between these two irreconcilable living patterns is the necessarily technophilic pathway that informs a culture's 'religion' of "progress"; whereas the sustainable approach has long ago learned to use mature appropriate technology to provide for itself. (I confess my own hypocrisy and complicity in choosing to travel 600 mph in the air. It's clearly not pono.) Suffice to say, the Greek myth of Prometheus (and hubris etc.) seems lost on many. Recognition of these foundational realities is essential in the struggle for local empowerment and self-determination in the face of oppressive forces of centralized capitalism. Mahalo for your good work. Malama pono.

Loved this!! Visited Hawai'i back in the 2019, don't know why, but I always was hooked by Hawaiian culture. When I finally visited , only Hawaiian historical places and felt destroyed, sad and angry when I visited Lili 'Uokalani Palace. Was so amazed by how advanced they were and their deep connection to nature. I really respect Hawaiian Culture. Tried to learn some olelo Hawai'i , before visiting but it was very limited. Duo lingo wasn't very good. Do you know where I can learn with people from Hawai'i?. Aloha from Uruguay.

I learned so much from this video. Thank you for making it. Six times in my life I traveled to Hawaii, my biggest connection was agriculture once the tourist buzz wore off. Seeing what is going one there is very nice to see. If I was younger I would move there and work the land and learn the language, but now my old brain cannot learn the words, its embarrasing actually. So I stay home here in Arizona/New Mexico. Its so important to learn a decent amount of a language in any part of the world to be part of the oldest community.
