LIVING OFF GRID | Boat Access Only Homestead | Building an Orchard - How I Get Fruit Trees! We start our fruit tree orchard by brining about 15-20 fruit trees home on our new truck (1981 Chevy) which have to be barged over to our homestead property because it's boat access only! Enjoy, living off the grid with us! ;)

Nicole and I are attempting to live off the grid in British Columbia, Canada. We have 8 acres of forest property sandwiched in between the Pacific Ocean, a fresh water lake, and a stream which flows year round from the lake into the ocean. For over nearly 10 years I grew a fruit tree, permaculture, garden, and native edible plant, herb, and raised bed garden food forest. You can still watch all the garden videos of my old desert garden in Arizona. I was born in British Columbia and I have returned to the Rain Forests of British Columbia to a "Raw Land" property to grow my 1st FULL EDIBLE FOOD FOREST Off Grid on a wilderness property. This climate is temperate and coastal, rarely seeing snow in the winter and highs in the 80's (30 Celsius) in the summer. It is a rare microclimate that spans from gardening zone 7-9. The property is 8 acres and completely overgrown, mostly with conifer trees. This area is a verifiable rain forest and situated in the Southwestern-most tip of the Canadian "Great Bear Rain Forest". NicHolistic ( / holisticnicole ) and I will be learning about edible seaweeds, edible native plants, edible mushrooms, and many other edible native trees/plants as we attempt to Build a Yurt, Draw Our Energy Clean, Live Off the Grid, and Grow an Epic Superfoods Garden and Fruit Tree Orchard. We will also have a lot of changes coming so get ready. More videos and BTS Clips at my VLOG channel / adventureswjakenicole

On the plus side, once your trees are established the deer do a great job of keeping the bottom branches pruned. OK, not such a big plus. The blowing of "flags" of ribbon generally keep them away. Good luck!

Those tree will need a lot of water this summer, mush more than you can carry. Check into building a ram pump and putting a water storage tank near the yurt.

Those compost bin lids might keep a raccoon out but not a hungry bear ! Order at least one set of chains NOW for that truck. Not for snow, but for MUD ! Two things to watch on older Chevy 4WD truck. Font hubs wear out and the steering box wears out. You will notice the second one quickly because you will lose all of you power steering fluid.

Now that you have the "Brown Beast" it is time to put it to work clearing the land ! • Buy a winch if you can afford it. Forget the steel cable. Use a synthetic like Dyneema. • Buy 3/4" 3 strand twisted nylon rope. Get a 200' and a 100'. Solid braided nylon (no polyester core) is better. Dyneema or similar is best, but expensive. The big advantage of Dyneema is that you can use smaller diameter rope (1/2") and pulleys. • Splice a thimble in each end. • Never use knots. They jam up and then are very difficult to undo. USE ANCHOR SHACKLES ! Get 6 or 8 of them. • Pulleys. 3 singles, 2 doubles. The singles should be a "snatch block" (can be opened to insert rope). Get one that have a "deadman's eye" on the end. • 2" or 3" wide flat nylon straps are very useful for using large trees as anchor point. Buy ones that have loops for end. Get rid of any hooks. Use shackles. Also upgrade your hand tools. • Buy a real ax. Buy a good file and a sharpening stone. 100+ years ago, lumber jacks would spend the evening sharpen their axes with file and stone. Made work go faster the next day. • Buy a mattock or a Pulaski for clearing roots. Never swing an ax into the dirt ! • Consider buying a 3/4 ax (a.k.a. "boy's ax") for kindling. • Buy Japanese pull saw. Get a folding one with coarse teeth. 8"-10" is plenty. They are amazing how fast the cut

Love the flatbed truck! I’d consider a poly tunnel for the fruit trees. They appreciate the protection in the winter, and the deer won’t be able to get to them. Or a big dog 😊

Yeah, the deer. We have buck in South Africa that have eaten my fruit trees. Some fruit trees they don't eat. Others just seem to be a part of the general edibles they browse on especially the younger ones. I fenced my orchard a while back and it works great to keep porcupine and buck out as long as I keep the gate closed. Porqpine are by far the most destructive in our area. I guess this is one way to see what the deer like or dont like. From what I have seen at my place Its unlikely they will destroy the trees but will reduce the size of some of the ones they like. Looks awesome where you guys are, what a dream!

Hey Jake & Nicole - Catching up here the morning after a 3 video offering from you two. Really enjoyed this one - short and sweet with lots of great footage both fun (you two in the Brown Beast) and also footage that advances your storyline - getting truck to Blackfish Hollow, loading up with plants, flooring, etc. How cute was Amy; does she inspire the two of you to start your own family?! I am not sure you want to talk about finances but if you don't mind answering one question we are really curious about one thing - what do they charge to transport a vehicle to BFH? (Blackfish Hollow). Lance & Carol - Victoria

Jake, I have been eagerly waiting on your every video for years. Deer don't like marigolds and they won't come even close to blood meal. Blood meal is organic and straight nitrogen so it is good for the soil. Just don't get it on the plants...

Spring time is here, go cut the forest down and start pilling the wood, in 18 inch cuts, Your gonna need four or five cords of cut logs and more if your floor inside insulated. And the time is gonna go like it was just yesterday the spring began and the snow is gonna fall and be deep, the lake is gonna freeze and your not gonna be prepared.....like the story of chicken little.

I was so excited about planting trees that I forgot the deer fence. They have eaten our trees badly- yours look bigger - they only eat what is within their reach. Still a solid fence to 2M is worth it if you can. We are using a deer scarer in the meantime and it is working as a stop gap - radio/torch with a movement sensor. Pretty sure wont work for ever.
