OFF-GRID - A Day In My Life | Building a Road in the Forest! We need a road through our 8 acres to allow Nicole and I to unload our new 800 pound wood stove inside. The stove is 2nd hand but the previous owner only used it 5 times and we were able to purchase it for about 50% off it's original price. Once we have the wood stove we will have a cooktop and dry heat forever since wood and trees are so abundant here on North Vancouver Island! Enjoy!

Nicole and I are attempting to live off the grid in British Columbia, Canada. We have 8 acres of forest property sandwiched in between the Pacific Ocean, a fresh water lake, and a stream which flows year round from the lake into the ocean. For over nearly 10 years I grew a fruit tree, permaculture, garden, and native edible plant, herb, and raised bed garden food forest. You can still watch all the garden videos of my old desert garden in Arizona. I was born in British Columbia and I have returned to the Rain Forests of British Columbia to a "Raw Land" property to grow my 1st FULL EDIBLE FOOD FOREST Off Grid on a wilderness property. This climate is temperate and coastal, rarely seeing snow in the winter and highs in the 80's (30 Celsius) in the summer. It is a rare microclimate that spans from gardening zone 7-9. The property is 8 acres and completely overgrown, mostly with conifer trees. This area is a verifiable rain forest and situated in the Southwestern-most tip of the Canadian "Great Bear Rain Forest". NicHolistic ( / holisticnicole ) and I will be learning about edible seaweeds, edible native plants, edible mushrooms, and many other edible native trees/plants as we attempt to Build a Yurt, Draw Our Energy Clean, Live Off the Grid, and Grow an Epic Superfoods Garden and Fruit Tree Orchard. We will also have a lot of changes coming so get ready. More videos and BTS Clips at my VLOG channel / adventureswjakenicole

I follow you from AZ already. But now - your videos are like deja vu for me. In spite of living for most of my life in Central EU , I was a huge fan of WA nature. If you did not read the book Egg and I by Betty MacDonald it is a must for you. She always had a kind of negative view of “ your” nature up there and wanted to be in Seattle but I LOVED IT. All what she disliked in her book I LOVED. Now I am happily retired in San Diego and in my age I cannot imagine the better weather than I have here. My organic garden is producing fully all year long for me, my kids and grandkids and I got a lot of inspiration from you AZ episodes . No one can imagine how big job you have done there. And this one is even much bigger. I am your “Grandmother fan”.And admirer. Next time I will share my Lake Tahoe “bear episode”.

That is a lot of hard work you have accomplished. Tell Nicole that I know she is happy to start setting up home. The chest of drawers was quite a coo! ^5! Rodents will destroy your wiring system in your car and truck. They will climb in and make nests. They are the number 1 nemesis of campers and people living on the road that they have to deal with.
@mgm2008
@mgm2008 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree about the rodents and wiring! I haven't done research on how to prevent them from nesting and chewing. But your van is especially vulnerable when just setting there.

Hey Jake, I am from NZ where feijoas grow like weeds and fruit like rabbits. We are just coming to the end of our fruiting season. Over the years the feijoa breding programs have made leaps and bounds into the cultivars have today. I really hope your trees are recent cultivars, I also hope you have more than one tree as even self fertile cultivars fruit poorly without cross pollination. Also, If it is going to get close to -10celsius there you will need to cover them or they will drop flowers/fruit.

Such hard work in a rainforest that keeps getting watered to replenish itself. I agree you should burn the road to clear it later. Wishing you the best. Got a brush machine for later? My acre is 500 feet back, so this is over a mile long, several thousand feet no? How long do you estimae? Creeping time i add awesome, walkable, and just breathtaking. Go to outside pride. Plant clover so you don' t have to mow too, the mini clover. Check out Creeping thyme too all cheap at Outside Pride.

Always encouraging to see your progress. When taking the branches out of the log at around 5min you had one leg on each side of the log. Me doing the same thing I always have both legs on the opposite side of the log as the branches I cut, having the log itself as safety in case of slipping with the saw. It may be me being a chicken. When I have 35km to nearest care-facility or health center I am extra careful.

JAKE & NICOLE - Good Morning. Not a usual time of day for a premiere! We were starting to wonder if you were going to produce any more videos or just work your butt off and leave the editing up to Nicole! Was great to see another well produced video from you including lots of additional footage that Nicole did not use in her edit. The riding on the side of the van brought back memories when you could ride on tailgate on the back of a pick up truck. You are fortunate to live in a place where such things are still possible. Interesting comments you made about forest fires and rain. Most man made forest fires are caused by a) cigarettes; which is not really an issue in Blackfish Hollow is it... and b) vehicles with hot exhaust parking on dry grass - so be careful of this one. Even though Blackfish Hollow may get 70" of rain a year you are still dry compared to parts of the BC coast where the annual total is DOUBLE that!!!! Keep up the great work - on the videos and your acreage :-) Lance & Carol - Victoria

You guys are so awesome! I believe some strategic collaboration is in order. :) Let's connect. Also, please wear chaps when using a saw. One, for your own safety. Two, your setting an example for everyone who watches. Might even be worth doing a video on this acknowledging the change of heart and recognition of the risks. It's only a matter of time and it won't be pretty without chaps. I've run a saw for 10 years, I should send you some pictures of the cuts in my chaps; if it had been my leg it would have been ugly. Anyway...I want to support and collaborate. Let's chat!

Unfortunately beekeeping is highly unethical. Their wings are clipped when shipped thru the mail, and then they work so hard only to have their precious regurgitation stolen when we can just as easily select nonviolent sweeteners.

What ever happened to those 4 beautiful, sweet dogs? Did you give them up for this new life? Please answer; i watched your video with all of them from 2+ years ago and you seemed to love them. Can you do a video update? Please don't ignore, I love dogs and really care.
