That's pretty good! Hahahaha! My buddy decided to totally gut an entire house he inherited. It's taken 2 years of work to rebuild it and expand it some. My buddy says he will never again do tthat! I had advised him not to gut it but sometimes people are hard-headed and stubborn. They gotta learn the hard day. He's now at about 98% done. He's sworn he will not ever even think of a complete overhaul of a home again. Obviously that's if you are planning to do most of the work yourself with occasional outside crew. Anyway, I know what hard labor is and I bought my house brand new ready to move in years ago and it is maintained. No remodels either. No thanks.

I started watching your channel many years ago when you were both novice sailors. You were both prepared to dive in head first and give things a go-kudos. But you have taken on the mammoth task of living in a tropical jungle and caring for many animals, which is no easy feat. Remember that your relationship and mental health are super important, and don't feel that you have to crowd-please your subscribers. Any time you feel you need to move from being landlocked just do it.

My wife and I retired fairly early (50's), purchased 9 heavily wooded acres, cleared one acre and had a home built, then went into overdrive clearing the rest of the property land (hundreds of trees taken down), building other structures, cutting a 1000 foot driveway, gravel, concrete, etc. Over the last several years we've done quite a bit on our property and it looks great now, but it has been amazing how fast time flies by. If you can afford it I highly recommend getting all your hardest work out of the way while your young because physical things it will get considerably harder to do as you age. Something else I recommend, when you clear an area that you plan just as your yard, immediately plant some sort of weed type grass (seed or better yet sod), such as Centipede grass because it will spread quick, grow thick, and once it does it will keep other weeds, vines, and such from growing, plus make it much easier to mow because Centipede grass doesn't grow tall. Thanks for another interesting video!

Thanks for your open and honest talk about your experience. It is not easy. I am a 60 year old man and I have had many gardens, raised goats, and chickens. I know what you are going through. It makes me smile seeing you young kids going through the same struggles I went through many years ago. YES! It is a full time job trying to have a crop, pets, and live stock. With that being said, I beg you to both take time each day (even if it is only 20 minutes) to sit back, love on those goats, love on each other, watch a sun set, and just soak it all in. Life goes by so FAST! If you blink, you are 60 and almost at the end of the line and Father Time is standing there with a puncher ready to punch your ticket. Love, Laugh, build, and be happy. Don't let the Negative people (comments) get you down. As you know, there will always be haters out there. I really enjoy watching you both and one day, who knows, maybe I will fly down there to PR and bring you both some coke and Captain which I am enjoying now. See you soon. We too purchased eight acres ("cuerdas") a year ago, and I couldn't agree more with most everything you said. Probably our greatest frustration is the lack of access to the equipment that you need. In the states, it's a quick trip to the store, or an Amazon delivery tomorrow. Here, you spend the entire day hunting for a part, or you wait a month for an Amazon delivery, hoping that it doesn't get lost in transit. I need a hi-lift jack to get my solar inverter up on the wall. It simply isn't for sale on the island, and Amazon claims it can get me one in three weeks. When it's not equipment or parts, it's expertise that can be difficult to find. I bought a used backhoe so that I could put in a driveway and clear the land. Punctured the front tires three times and rear tire once. Try finding someone who can make service calls for heavy equipment tire repair. Now I've got a blown hydraulic seal, and I need a service call for that. Can't find anyone. Like you, no regrets. The island is beautiful and the people are absolutely wonderful. But boy, don't think for a moment that the living is easy. Best of luck to you both, Doc Profesor a Pescador Combate, Cabo Rojo

My wife and I bought one acre of land in Hawaii, and have been living off grid for 9 years. We went through most of the same difficulties as you’re experiencing now. It took me 4 years to build the house, all on a generator, and another two years before we got solar, and yes, it was like paying our electric bill 10 years in advance, but when the grid goes down, we still have power. I wouldn’t want to go back. We’re on rain catchment, with a 5k gallon tank, particle filters, and a UV light to kill the micro-organisms. We have the same problem with growing a garden, and just recently built a greenhouse, in hopes of keeping the pests out… time will tell. I found that each time I clear a new area, to make something nice, I just created more work in upkeep. All that being said, I would do it all again. It’s been an amazing learning experience, and great sense of accomplishment. By the way, the coqi frogs managed to get here by boat, and have now infiltrated Hawaii too. Good luck to you, in my opinion, it’s worth it in the end.

As one tropics liver to another, be aware that wood that isn't completely protected will decompose at an astounding rate. Spare varnish or another coating that will protect against sun and water damage. is required unless you want to replace it often. The jungle is as corrosive as salt water. Those goats will really help with keeping the jungle back but the can't while in a pen. Free range them and the chickens as soon as possible. Geese are great watch dogs, they eat bugs and protect their chicken/kitten mates.

Thanks for a candid, realistic review of your first year trying to live off-grid in a rain forest. Fascinating to hear just how hard it is to raise crops there, to obtain drinkable water, to plan and build when it rains almost every day, and the need to run a generator 50% of the time. The critters -- tarantulas, centipedes and other nasties -- would drive me out quickly, along with the omnipresent rain, humidity and heat. But I enjoy watching you build a life there despite the difficulties.

I would highly highly suggest switching to raised garden beds, since you are new to gardening. It will help with pests and you'll be able to better manage your soil. Mix 50% your soil with 50% compost. I prefer 2ftx4ft beds. The taller they are the less you have to bend over but for economic savings, i have 1ft deep beds. If you need suggestions or plant help I'd be happy to try to offer advice. (I live on PR's west coast)

Grown up on a farm and married a farmer. One thing I had to learn over and over again is that farm animals are NOT pets. Watching you from the start petting the goats, I thought to myself: Yeah, you will learn. The circle of life is prevalent on a farm. Also you cannot eat your pets. Had to give 70 chickens away after spending a lot of money, because I did not have the heart to kill them. Farming aint easy.

A thought on your solar system research, have you checked out Signature Solar EG4 systems? Might contact them about a sponsorship I do not know of anyone installing one in PR. They have a new outside battery what a better place to test that than a rain forest. They have sponsored several channels. I was really surprised when i saw them gobbling styrofoam and bubble wrap. They give back with their beauty. Asthethics are also appreciated.

Sounds like a real learning experience! But, you ARE learning! I would suggest you consider building a geodesic dome as a home. Easiest method I have found to do such is to use Structural Insulated Panels. More learning opportunities.

I had 10 acres on my own. I was always busy, broke, worried a lot, and never went on holidays but I loved every moment and was so grateful. Start small and don't do everything at once. We'll watch regardless. I really admire your energy but take your time to enjoy each small accomplishment. For example don't clear what you don't need and when you're ready fence and let your animals do the work. You will also get more out of growing one tomato plant successfully than losing 99 out 100 pumpkin plants so again start small. I love your channel and even though it's tough at times well done for caring so much for all your animals.

Owning land is a different commitment than being a boat owner. You gave up one bracket of lifestyle for another. I hope the latter pays off big time to compensate for the previous. That little white tip on your black cat is priceless.

In New Zealand we consider a block of land like yours as a "Life sentence block" , work all week to pay for it and work all weekend to maintain it. I admire your drive and perseverance.

land ownership it is a long term commitment, takes 8-10 years of work, and $200k to get it going to where you can sit back and take some breaks. once you get your basics in, water, sewer, power, nice house. stuff will start getting easier. gardens take 5 or so years to get going, livestock takes also around 5 years to get the systems down.

Love yall! Might want to look into growing perennials like papaya, jabotacoba, jackfruit, breadfruit, soursop, mango, etc. Plant once and it’s a little intensive in the beginning, but once established, you got food for life and you can trade some of your fruit for vegetables. Go down the rabbit hole on permaculture

Here's a tip for your washing machine: what costs the most power in a washing machine is the heating element. We bypass that by using hot water, via the boiler, coming into the machine. Set the machine on cold, hot water coming in, and batteries not completely drained .

Hang in there we love your channel. I've been watching for years. I'm sure you have lots of advice givers. But here is somemore. Let those goats do the land clearing, set up a fence for a given area, and let them go to town. Swallow some pride and let people bless you if they want to bless you. Focus on what brings in revenue for your channel no matter where it comes from . You guys are good story tellers that's why people watch. Prayers for your success. Your a power couple.

What a great and honest assessment of your reality. Your description starts to paint a picture of what a home can look like on this property. There are many things which come to mind - prevailing winds to help with heat and humidity, solar orientation, roof feeding a cistern, etc., etc. As an Architect - and a sailor - with some 35 years of experience, working on a vast array of projects, many out of the box, I'd be happy for you to contact me and pick my brain. My personal advice is to focus on a house, but I could be wrong.

Yes they keep it real. This is not the "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" where all the labor and work is farmed out and you just tell them what you want and they get it done while you relax in your other beautiful homes. My youth began with me laboring. Once I started my mechanical design profession I was done with laboring. Physcial laboring will wear your body out and make your older years very rough.

I understand you, word for word, with land ownership: there is no rest, except for those moments when everything is fine and great. Here in Argentina, it is a bit difficult, but it is not an island, and I can understand that resources are more limited than here. When you have the woods, you don't have the right hardware and you have to buy or rent, then you made your budget and nothing you planned is possible or the hidden costs are astronomical. And having animals, even if it is just a cat (we have three and two dogs) is a constant source of worry (and love).

I have a ton of experience with solar, we are running 22kw of solar with 20,000w of inverter power, please feel free to contact me if you want to get any advice - I can send you pictures of our system or do a video call. The trackers are the way to go if you have the space and you do! You will not need to build any structure, it will be fast and give you up to 40% more out of your solar!

You may want to consider growing in raised metal containers. They ship them and you put it together. They are great for controlling the things that hurt your vegetables on the ground. You can make a chicken wire dome or netting to protect from predators. Also, you should consider breeding rabbits for meat. It’s a quick turnover and a good protein source for you. They produce the best fertilizer for the plants. Good luck.

I only have to deal with my couple thousand feet of yard and it can take so many days to clear and maintain. I couldn’t imagine taking care of 8 acres. The power setup will definitely be at least 30k. Luckily you are familiar with all the equipment setup from the boat. I would reach out to companies for sponsorship discounts. You never know, and could save you thousands. Definitely a massive project and I see how you have to prioritize the steps to get things done.
