Jay, I served in US Navy Subs and took the same type of showers as you do. Turn on the water, get wet from head to feet, turn off the water, soap everything (no such thing as shampoo & rinse conditioner, rinse off and you’re done. Some of my old crew members still do it after being out of the navy for 30 to 40 years. You guys are great. Stay warm and enjoy your chair…looks comfy. Happy New Year. Stay warm. Take great care of Jen. ❤❤❤😊😊😊

Underground tank, life changing, you should be able to survive winter on 1500gal. I only have 600gal under the hitch enclosed and heated. My basement exhaust will be diverted to a insulated shed with a 80gal tub elevated to gravity feed the tank, shovel snow in for a few days to melt it then I can get mid-winter refills. I was recently injured for a week, glad I have nothing to do physically to survive.

This is just an idea! I watch a lot of off grid farmers and many of them use emercible heaters that they put in the cows water tanks to keep it from freezing that work off of a solar panel and battery. That way they don't have to keep going out and breaking ice so that they can drink. I don't know if this would work in your water storage tank or not, but just an idea to maybe research something that can keep it from freezing. God Bless, hope you had a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year!
@timware5943Күн бұрын
I do the same. Is it work? Yes….but like everything off grid it’s worth it not relying on anyone else…being self sufficient. It’s amazing how far 5 gallons can go when you’re not flushing down a toilet. Merry Christmas and happy New Year’s guys! 👍🏻👍🏻

I’m incorporating a utility room into my cabin that thill be highly insulated. In it will be my lifepo4 batteries and power station, an LP hot water heater, water pump and 35 gallon water tank. The heat from the water heater will keep room warm when rest of cabin is shut down while still keeping batteries happy when I need them and to accept a charge. A set of outside sill faucets will exit into cabin for use when the cabin is being used.

On camping trips we would heat a pot of water on the propane camp stove. While it didn't provide us a full shower, it made us feel like we did. There were times even when other campers, some from other countries visiting the U.S.A., would ask if they too could wash using our warm pot method on our stove. We've met so many people from all over the world sharing a tent space, food and these warm showers, enjoying the company of these fellow off-gridders, even if it was only for the weekend. Little things matter and can open doors to others otherwise closed to us. Mahalo for the two of you sharing your life via KZbin. With Aloha...

I enjoy watching your channel, and truly, both of you are the experts on off grid cabin living, I'm just an armchair off gridder myself. But, here's the question, and I know it means more work in the beginning for you. Why can you not build a small room onto your cabin that can house at minimum two water totes, hide the totes with two wooden louvered doors, and allow the heat you already have in the cabin keep the water above freezing? That way you can still keep your indoor plumbing operating. Make all your piping so all the branches of plumbing are in parallel. Install a pump suitable for your existing power, and install an aquastat so it can sense the water temperature to turn your pump on so it can circulate to prevent freezing. Make sure the totes are filled up before winter. Another question how much water do you use in the winter? The next problem would be how to fill the tanks when the water runs out durning the winter? O well, just a question, will not be offended if you said it was a stupid idea.
@OffgridwithJayandJen19 сағат бұрын
All great ideas.....this just happens to be the way we are doing it for now. Not set in stone to never change, just what worked for our time and budget while building.

Like your videos, we have a place we go on weekends in Brown County Indiana. We have city water and electric, but wanting to go off grid over the next three years. Building a pond for water and plan to put up solar panels once we get more clearing of trees for the pond. We have an old goat shed the people had for goats and hay storage, going to turn that into storage for a battery bank, and storage for log splitter, mower, lawn tools, etc… building a lean too off the back to be able to park tractor under and work under when it’s raining. Maybe we could trade vacation homes sometime?

We are still in the planning faze of our off grid cabin and we were thinking about doing a icb tote in the winter and insulating it and maybe putting a pump in it to circulate the water since we don’t get super cold winters for very long here in Missouri, anyway we were thinking of doing a propane cook stove and possibly a hot water heater in the winter and we were just curious how often you all have to run into town to refill your propane tanks? Do you exchange tanks or do you have bigger tanks you just have refilled? Anyway my wife and I love your videos. Keep up the good work. Also the garage solar setup with the deep freeze seems to still be working well.

I'm very lucky to have some former off grid neighbors that live in town now and in the winter they let me come once a week to have a nice shower and do laundry. When it's warm outside I wash off behind a tarped off area out back of my shed. I heat up water on my little stove and just dip a small pot and pour it over me. I have a shower system like that on the big list, but honestly I'd almost put building a simple enclosure with a roof and windbreak higher on the list! 🤣😂🤣. Getting a little weary of the wind blowing hard here in Missouri and the tarps slapping me all the time! Texas Deb ❤️
