Chance Wimberley, 32, lives in Colbert, Oklahoma, and earns $39,000 a year as a child support case specialist for the state of Oklahoma. The 32-year-old accrued roughly $13,000 in credit card debt after he graduated high school. He still has around $4,500 left to pay off, including $3,400 he consolidated into a personal loan at a lower interest rate. On top of that, he has around $22,000 in federal student loan debt left from undergrad.
This is an installment of CNBC Make It's Millennial Money series, which profiles people across the U.S. and details how they earn, spend and save their money.
Read more about about Chance's budget breakdown here: cnb.cx/2HpBJD9
Chance Wimberley admits he’s made his fair share of financial mistakes over the years.
“I applied for as many credit cards as I possibly could, and I basically allowed myself to drown under the debt,” Wimberley says. “My credit was ruined for seven years because I had no plan to get out of that debt.”
Around 2013, Wimberley says he had an “ah-ha” moment about his finances when he was shopping for his first car.
“One day, I woke up and I felt miserable,” he says “The debt just created more anxiety for me.”
Since then, Wimberley’s made a point to prioritize saving money. Today, he earns $39,000 a year as a child support case specialist for the state of Oklahoma, a job with responsibilities similar to a paralegal. He lives with his parents in the small town of Colbert, in the house in which he grew up.
In the past few years, he’s managed to put away $35,000 in a savings account and $15,000 in his 401(k), despite never earning more than $40,000 a year. He’s steadily decreasing his debts and plans to completely pay off his credit card balance, personal loan and car note, all of which totals around $22,000, by December.
There are lessons for everyone in his financial journey, he says. A big one: Understand how debt, including credit cards and student loans, work. Don’t just sign whatever document a financial institution offers you; take the time to do your research.
“I looked at debt like it was nothing, I could just pay it off,” he says. “But in the past few years, I realized that debt drags people down.”
A second lesson: Don’t be afraid to make changes and go after what you want. Wimberley has wanted to be a nurse since his early 20s, but in college he didn’t think he’d be able to handle the coursework. Instead of pursuing his passion, he played it safe and studied history and political science at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. His student loan payments, currently deferred because of Covid-19, are monthly reminders of a path not taken. “I didn’t want to challenge myself because I was scared,” he says.
That’s all changing soon. In January, Wimberley’s going back to school to get his master’s degree and become a nurse practitioner. It’s a big life change, but after overcoming a health scare and doing the work to build up his confidence over the past few years, he’s ready to take on the challenge.
“When the pandemic hit, it made me realize that life is too short and I need to pursue my dreams while I still have the chance,” he says.
Wimberley says he is sometimes “embarrassed” to still live with his parents. But given his monthly income, he sees it as a choice between “ramen noodles and an apartment” or living more comfortably at home.
For him, it was an easy decision. He contributes $100 per month toward his parents’ mortgage and handles his groceries and some of the home’s maintenance costs.
He’s close with his parents, especially his mother. The family didn’t have a lot of money when Wimberley was growing up. His mother lost her job when he was in kindergarten, and his father is a disabled veteran with dementia. Some months, the family of four lived on less than $700. But as a child, none of that bothered him.
“For a lot of people, money is of the utmost importance. But as a kid, all I remember is my sister and I enjoying our life, and my mom and my dad giving me the love that any parent should give,” he says. “Regardless of how much money we had or didn’t have, I knew they would love me for the rest of my life.”

A lot of people are not financially stable this period and it's not easy, I always advise people, don't just waste your stimulus checks or salary, invest it in something that will yield more, even if it is a part of it. We can't keep relying on a paycheck that is already half-spent before we even receive it, there are investment opportunities that have helped a lot of people especially in the financial market. Having different streams of income is essential in this pandemic, especially now most of us have to earn and work from home. I've made impressive progress so far this year and it has helped me sort out a lot of bills and I do that through a registered investment company. You can get in touch with the manager via Instagram @nicholas__fxtrade he will guide you properly.......

I lived at home until I was 29! NO shame in that bro! Hate us cause they ain't us lol! Anyway, here's my breakdown: Wife and I are 32 and welcomed our daughter 2 months ago. Annual pretax: $145k Mortgage principal: 181k 15 yr conventional/2.33% interest Monthly total burn rate: 4500 (Includes 15% 401k/403b contributions from both of us and 12k annual roth ira contribution broken down) Monthly savings: 3000 (goes into high yield online savings account) Emergency fund: 25k (in the high yield account for liquidity) Plan: start a 529 or esa to fund baby's college; pay off house in 10 years (or less!); both of us only work part time by age 52 for insurance. Were comfortable currently but having this wonderful daughter will change the budget some. What do you guys think? Thumbs up if well be ok, or comment to guide us to the right direction!

To anyone that hasn’t checked out on Mr Nicholas , you are missing out BIG TIME!! I’m a pretty strong investor and I thought I was fairly savvy until I started learning from Nicholas that I still had a whole lot to learn. Even if you just join his minimum level, it’ll pay you big dividends just if you follow his trades alone. The extra content he’s posting over there is worth way more than these other self-proclaimed KZbin stock gurus are charging. He’s a truly righteous dude. I’ve got nothing to gain by posting this other than to hopefully get a few more great folks into our little ‘Nicholas’ family. Right!, lol. Did you miss the part that he's only paying $100 per month for rent, eating out, in his 30s, drives a nice car, has little direction. Renting a room at a nice house? Split the costs 3 ways. Mom, dad and him. $2,100 per month total expenses ÷ 3 people (toilet paper, paper towels, toothpaste, laundry soap, the utilities, gas/oil mixture for the lawn mower and string trimmers, pesticides for the house/yard, depreciation on the new roof due in a few years, lightbulbs, carpets and linoleum/hard-wood floor cleaning and maintenance and products, shampoo electricity and materials to clean the sofa and loveseat once a year, Windex and a new squeegee to clean the windows inside and out a few times per year, cleaning his car at mom and dad's house - their electric bill to run the vacuums and the liquid soap and water (bill)... and the list goes on. Does he help rake the leaves year around? Clean the gutters? Help organize and sweep/clean out the garage? Sweep up the driveway or sidewalk to help him earn his keep? Fix 1/3 of the meals every day? 3 people x 7 meals a week? 21 meals. He owes them 7 meals (that HE bought AND cooked) per week. Oh wait, there's more. It costs money to fire up the stove, wash the dishes, by hand or in the dishwasher. It costs money to wash the shower and towels, or dish towels, to wash the sheets and pillow cases, the clothes. All for $100 per month? He's not earning his keep in any way, shape or form. Ugh! 👎👎👊👎👎

@@majoroldladyakamom6948 well the video, and the whole “millennial money” franchise solely focuses on how millennials spend their money and manage their expenses. Cleaning around the house, raking leaves, and clearing out the garage would not be included in his financial breakdown since it doesn’t cost him money to do so. He says he helps his mom take care of his sick father, so with that in mind, I’m assuming he does a lot of manual labor at home.
