Ashley Chorath, 27, makes $60,000/year and Andrew Tiu, 31, makes $58,000/year. The couple works as resident physicians in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The couple has been on the front line of the coronavirus pandemic and seen first-hand the toll it takes on both patients and health-care workers. They’ve also cut their expenses dramatically (Chorath has nearly $180,000 in student loans left to pay off), gotten engaged and are now preparing for Chorath to move to Washington, D.C. this summer to start a new residency in psychiatry.
This is an installment of CNBC Make It’s Millennial Money series, which profiles people around the world and details how they earn, spend and save their money.
Read more about their budget breakdown here: cnb.cx/2ZReMzl
Although the couple live a full life together in Philadelphia, where they like to try new restaurants and explore the city by bike, money is always top of mind. But it’s also a topic that unites them, as they learned early on in their relationship that their financial values are closely aligned.
After completing her first year of residency in Florida, where she grew up, Chorath accepted a position in Philadelphia. In her excitement about the move, she changed her location from Florida to Philly on the dating app Coffee Meets Bagel in May 2019, and she soon matched with Tiu.
They immediately clicked and paragraphs-long text conversations turned into talking on the phone for hours since they couldn’t meet in person. The pair discovered that they have a lot in common, even outside of their profession, from the cultures they grew up in to their shared faith to their penchant for saving money.
By the time Chorath arrived in Philly that June, they knew they wanted to be together. “We ended up meeting the day after I moved to Philadelphia ... and since then we’ve been inseparable,” Chorath says. Tiu proposed on Chorath’s 27th birthday in June 2020, and they hope to get married in 2021, pandemic willing.

@kev ow Living in PA is cheap. a decent house in a good neighborhood is about 300-400k, and we have very low income taxes. prices for food etc are also very good. 70000 might be the min in California, but in PA that's enough for a solid middle-class life.

@@innervisions2528 It has to do with it because generally speaking children of immigrants do not grow up with privileged backgrounds. They often have to work hard while balancing their parent's culture with American culture. It's a major struggle and pretending like it's not a factor is silly. Also, for people of Asian descent, you have to work extra hard against racist policies like affirmative action.

Regarding their wedding, for those who don't know, it's extremely important in Indian culture. Typical Indian weddings are multi-day event with hundreds if not thousands of guests. So it's understandable when they need to have two, and plan to spend about 50K. That's a lot of money but I don't think it's a huge deal for them because they will make many times that a year when they're done with residency in a few years.

tarzan12345 yes I agree. As an Indian wedding Dj, couples easily spend $50,000 to $100,000 for a wedding. Weddings are typically two days. Some are three days. But the wedding day is the main event. Indians like to play good host. We make sure to feed everyone and take care of them, as they have traveled to attend our wedding.

It’s not as magical as you think.. internists start out 160- 240k depending on community health, teaching/government positions vs private. For those fortunate enough to open their own practices, almost zero income first 2-3 years (one must build up the patients’ roster, collections of insurance pay can lag up to 18 months, staff’s pay, rent, equipments). If student loans are involved, currently, for 200k at 6% interest, about $1400 per month and not tax deductible. Malpractice with tail coverage can be up to 18k per year. Disability insurance about 1.2- 2k per month depending on age. In the end, if one works for a group, monthly take home after 401k, health insurance deductible, etc about 10k. After all the other post tax obligations such as childcare/student loans/mortgage on a modest home/car payment for a Toyota/bills and gas, one would have enough left for a nice dinner once - twice per month or save up for one modest vacation per year. Don’t do primary care if money is the driver for your passion in doing medicine

@triiii1303 3 жыл бұрын
M T.N ok but that’s a internist. He’s in a good IM program in Philadelphia. He’ll have lucrative fellowship options to further specialize. And she’s a radiologist, which ball parks around 450-500ish k. They’ll be killing it if reimbursements for the specialties they choose stay the same.
