Right! I graduated with $15k of student loan debt & 10k of credit card debt and will have it payed end of this year. Basically taking me 2 years to complete. Meal prepping definitely helps. Paying off the cards that have the highest interest is the best move and making a huge payment to one of them at least once a month helps too.

I mean in the long term that's not so bad. Assuming she continues to raise her income and is easily employable then those degrees will definitely be worth. Now the people who are $100k+ in debt with $25k salaries are those who wasted their time.
@irisxkae
@irisxkae 5 жыл бұрын
Tigerkem I actually agree. Her income will rise but she’ll have to stay in public service for 10 years. She would make more money working for a bigger private company. Also, I believe only 1% or less of applicants actually got their loans forgiven from this program. Her outlook on her SL’s are not good.

@@irisxkae Yeah that's my biggest issue with this video. She shouldn't rely on the forgiveness and should pay off as much as she can now. She has savings of a $1000 a month, so she can definitely put more money towards her loans. The interest is only going to make it worse.
@gr86er

@@irisxkae The reason for so many rejections for the PSLF program was because a lot of those applicants didn't even meet the eligibility requirements. So she should be good as long as she makes sure she meets those. Whether a program like that should be subsidizing education is another issue....

How is she only paying $60 a month towards her student loan if she owes that much? That public service plan scares me because it isn’t a guarantee and 10 years is a long time to wait for something like that. I guess debt can feel crippling so it’s easy to have an “I don’t care” mentality but that interest! I hope she starts following someone like Dave Ramsey. You guys are ridiculous! She spent years studying for a degree that she is passionate about and is in a contract agreement with the government regarding her loans. She is giving the government a service by working in a qualified sector so no, she should not pay a single dime more than the $60 that she is already paying toward her student loans. Had she chosen to work for a private sector which would likely pay her a much higher salary then that would be a different story. And with the amount of savings that she has accrued, especially years after the video was made, I doubt that she would have any issues getting a loan.

Well even if I count in her roth at 240 a month it leaves $750 a month so it looks like she started saving six months ago. Beside that she has 10k in her roth, that means she's been saving in it for 3 to 4 years. Math just doesn't make sense. And BTW $3.5 ice coffee makes a difference, and this agriculture subscription also does make a great difference. Also why would you invest $115k in a degree that makes you earn just a few thousands more than if you were uneducated. Do you really need that level of education to be a social worker?

I appreciate that CNBC finally had someone who is more relatable to millenials in terms of finances. For lots of folks who do not have financial support from their parents, being thousands and even hundreds of thousands of dollar in debt is a reality. Many of the people featured through this series have been people who have had their education paid for by their parents, so this is a nice change for the series. Given all the debt Leah has and living in New York, I think Leah's relationship with money is healthy and overall balanced.

Guys 70k at 25 is good. At 30 years old she should be at 100k or near it. Then at 40 she should be at over 100k a year. I make 70k in RI and I'm 26 and I am also a public service worker. Sure, my loans aren't 115k but I'm sitting at 94k and I contribute 200 bucks a month for my student loans. Trust I know social workers that make over 100k a year. Dont underestimate their earning potential. However, if I were her I would definitely relocate to a cheaper area.

Many move here because of opportunities. Opportunities are plentiful on the east coast in general. Boston, NYC, Philly, Baltimore, and DC are all major cities that offer incredible opportunities and events that attract young professionals. I left Chicago making $50k with an MBA. I came to NYC and with 1 year experience made $80k! I sold my car, canceled car insurance, saved on gas, monthly garage fees, saved on car maintenance, saved on bogus red light camera tickets and came out ahead. My boyfriend followed me here and he, too, came out ahead here. After 5.5 years we just bought a 2 bdrm with 1.5 baths. That is why people move here! FYI - my salary has nearly doubled from $80k in 5.5 years!!! Any more questions from people who..."don't understand why people want to live in NYC"?

Equity over equality? What does that mean?
@mariefernandeaugustin1392
@mariefernandeaugustin1392 5 жыл бұрын
khal clary it means that treating people the same isn’t always just. For example, a blind person and a seeing person cannot be treated “equally” as an expression of justice. You need to provide the blind person additional accommodations so they’re treated equitably. The blind can’t read regular books, they need Braille, walking sticks, helping animals etc to be equitable participants in society. The same goes for others who may be marginalized socially for whatever reason.

So why don't you and others go and work with one of the most despised populations then? People in adult bodies yet with social and mental capacities of 12 year olds in many cases, violent criminal offenders, people with untreated diseases and sicknesses, the traumatized, mentally unstable, impoverished individuals, etc. There is a reason why the government created the PSLF program because more often than not, people do not want to work with these sorts of populations. She is in a legal contract with the government and it has been both verified and approved. Why ridicule her when she is fulfilling her end of the agreement? She is doing great with the amounts that she is saving and investing each month and especially at such a young age. This is public service at its finest and she deserves all of the benefits awarded to her.

At 1:43 it mentions that she is apart of the Public Service Loan program (since she works for a public agency.) Essentially the philosophy of the Public Service Loan program is we'll forgive your loans if you work for in a public position for 10 years. The reason this incentive exists is to draw people away from the private sector who could make more money there. This isn't illegal, its an incentive (ie mostly free college tuition vs making more money + college tuition.)

I would recommend that she attempt to pay off as much of that debt herself as well. 70k is not a bad salary and she can get ahead of the debt actually. Fellow social worker here. Many people don’t realize that in most states to call yourself a SW you must have a masters. Second not all SW are low wage earners. That salary is pretty normal in healthcare. But only 1% of individuals that have applied have receive direness one addition to this program being highly unstable depending on what administration is in office. The program could become defunct.I hope she reads this but if she’s serious about having some of this loan forgiven look at some federal agency jobs(ex:dept of defense or VA). If she gets an LCSW she could work for agencies that have federal healthcare forgiveness NHSC LP. Better options if you can.
