I lived and worked as a chef in Japan for 2 years, best time of my life so far. Watching videos like this breaks my heart because the beauty of Japan never ceases to amaze me, even after living there and having traveled there several times too. It's a a heart-break that makes me smile though and I'm so glad you're enjoying Japan! Really is a place where you can visit time and time again without getting sick of the sights!

I have yet to visit Japan so I can’t compare the two but I believe a trip to New England would not disappoint. Tokyo is just such an eclectic mix of the old, the new and the downright bizarre. I just love Japan and can't wait to go back. Okonomiyaki is like one of my favourite things, had a real jealousy pang there! The kei camper was cute if not entirely practical, my camper is a JDM import but it's a bit bigger than that thankfully!

In answer to your question, New England in the fall DEFINITELY rivals the changing colors in Japan. Vermont particularly blew my mind. So lovely. Totally agree with you regarding Mount Fuji! It's cinematically beautiful. I get much the same buzz from Mount Shasta in CA, just such an iconic volcano and similarly, it really stands out against the surrounding landscape.

In the mid-50s my military family was stationed in Tainan, Taiwan. As a family, we went to Toyoko on R and R. As an Aussie I would definitely recommend Australia, but it is very big and in the red centre (desert country) preparation is very important. The desert is incredibly beautiful, but you need to be sensible. As a Maori whose father is from New Zealand, I have travelled through both the North and South Island... honestly absolutely stunning! My one issue is the tourist destinations can be expensive. I travelled with kids and many places made us pay children at adult prices. Then they made our children sit on our laps. We had enough and decided to do no more tours, we did only what we could find for free or at sensible prices. We had so much fun after that.

To answer your 2 questions: 1. Yes, Vermont in autumn is SO MUCH more vibrant and colorful than you showed in this video! I say this having just done vanlife following autumn peak color through Vermont from the Canadian border to the Massachusetts border. I also kept going all the way to South Carolina by Thanksgiving, and nothing south of Vermont was remotely as pretty. 2. You should add vanlife New Zealand to your bucket list. NZ is very setup to cater to campervans like your UK van. Your first nights by the lake in Japan reminded me of many of the FREE Dept. of Conservation campsites in NZ, but the ones in NZ are actual secluded campsites, not city parking lots. I'm not sure any country can top NZ for vanlife.

(Don't forget to visit Acadia National Park and try the blueberry pie!!) Head south along the coast for a Halloween stop in Salem MA, then shoot for Newport RI, Meander along Connecticut's coast, and you're back into NYC. @lakelili

Canadian here and the Fall colours are very similar to Japan... the difference is that our landscape is much wilder, less manicured. Obviously the architecture is significantly different but New England and Atlantic Canada has its own charm. For something completely different, why not take "van life" out on the water and rent a houseboat and tour the Trent Severn Waterway in Ontario (Canada). Check out Egan Houseboats or R&R Houseboats. You can do 3-day or 7 day rentals and take your houseboat out on the lakes and travel through locks and visit small towns in cottage country. Rcommend late June through the end of August (after that it gets quiet.) Best way to get Kawartha Dairy ice cream...

actually new England is absolutely gorgeous in fall but so is the midwest. Here in Minnesota the autumn colors up north is so beautiful and vibrant it stuns me every time and further north to Canada, just wow....beautiful beautiful beautiful .... The entire world though, is beautiful if we take time to stop and enjoy it. I can't wait to see Tokyo and Japan as well, thank you for this gem of video!!
