My career as an interior designer has led me to the two most important factors for choosing a color pallet. Number one, don't just go for whatever color happens to be "in" at the moment. Choose colors that YOU like. And two, consider the direction of the light in your room. If it has strong southern exposure, the room is going to be warmer, so cool colors might look good in there. But if it has northern exposure your room will always feel cool. Grays and blues will feel cold. Go for warmer colors instead!

Hey thanks! The front windows in my lr face north and on the west side is a door. I keep it open to the storm door 90% of the time, except when the sun makes it in the space between the door window & roof of my neighbor's house. 😂 I cannot STAND the color of my lr. Imagine a pet peed on a white wall & it dried. Yellowish cream. Being in TX, the walls are textured. My hubby doesn't want to paint bec of the vaulted ceiling. He doesn't wanna do it! 😄🤣😄

A few years ago we had the interior of our house painted. I chose the same colours throughout. The walls a brown/grey and woodwork white. I love it because each room seems to take on a complimentary tone to the other rooms. Some rooms cast a brown tone, some a grey and each room changes as daylight changes and night light falls. It also makes the house appear more spacious and one room fades into the next room. I am happy with my choice.

I agree with comments about taller items over the mantel. The picture is overwhelmed by the heavier detail and architecture of the fireplace. You have tall windows so fill the space over the mantle with height similar to the windows. Use visual weight created by taller, bolder items to balance the space over the mantel. The look of the mantel and hearth create a visually bottom-heavy look that need upward movement to fix the downward heavy look of the fireplace.

Thanks for sharing your journey Anna! We moved into a 1960’s half duplex that my husband completely gutted. We used Benjamin Moore White Dove in eggshell finish on the walls and satin on the trim. Absolutely love it!!! It’s a beautiful shade that reads cooler or warmer depending on the lighting and location, I agree with this description as our main living area faces south with tons of sun. Our wood furniture is 1960’s teak, an oatmeal colour wool area rug and upholstered furniture in smooth and highly textured finishes for contrast. I leaned heavily on my preferences from the 60’s and 70’s when I grew up instead of following trends that never ever felt right to me over the last 30 years. I finally feel like my home reflects our tastes and lifestyle too. Your home is lovely! Keep listening to your inner voice on preferences and how the colours, etc make you feel ❤

I love your "crazy" bathroom, Anna. It's nice to have one area of the home that departs wildly from the rest of the rooms. That color is bold and refreshing and unexpected. It reminds me of matcha tea. And the artwork is perfect with that shade of green. The green makes all of the paintings pop and become more interesting, whereas a white or cream would be too safe and boring. I love the mix of painting and photography, and I especially love the abstract portrait. The whole room looks like it could be a designer-styled bathroom in a very eclectic upscale Parisian restaurant.

Love the white paint - I agree it makes the red brick pop. Try natural blocky wood candlesticks- not brass or gold. Think more “organic” which will look good with the plant and give the softer look you want. The books on the mantle are too colorful for that spot. Try some black and white books to pull in the framed prints over the sofa. Put a book in the middle of the book stack that is similar in color to whatever wood candlesticks you use (for balance).

Thanks for another great video!! I always enjoy your content! Your living room is looking great! Just as an idea for the fireplace... Fireplaces are so large, that decorations often seem too small and out of scale, lending to a cluttered look. A single LARGE piece of art can sometimes work, as it's more in balance with the sizs of the fireplace (I have a 42" x 42" framed piece of art sitting on my mantle and leaning against the wall). You could also do something similar as you did above your couch - 4 (slightly larger) square frames, arranged in a square pattern, which would provide additional cohesiveness to your space. I love your gorgeous home - and particularly enjoyed your crazy bathroom!! What an awesome use of color!!! Cheers to you!! ❤

Great job clearing out clutter and creating the chic gallery over the sofa❤️I would place the pillows at the corners of the sofa & repeat that color that you love from the beautiful new pillows elsewhere so it doesn’t look random. To me the TV console looks v beachy / tropical & the coffee table looks rustic / farmhouse (?) & even though mixing styles can be quite chic, everything still has to go with the Chippendale style sofa. Nonetheless, I think once you get the placement of the main pieces of furniture right, everything else will fall into place bc now the chairs seem awkwardly positioned. Perhaps move the TV to over the fireplace (glad you hid the cord; visible cords are the worst in ruining a room); you can even get a frame to make it look like art if you want (lots of tutorials online if you don’t want to buy a new framed tv). Lastly remember that just like you coordinate styles & colors when you get put an outfit together, you do the same with a room. Everything doesn’t have to, and shouldn’t, match, but it should coordinate.

Hi, Anna. BFA Interior Design, commercial/institutional career work. I'd like to share some observations and make a couple of suggestions. First of all, you did very well with your decluttering and changing your paint color to the white. The white color camouflages all of the light switches and thermostats on the walls. The white also softens the transitions at the angles of the walls and the ceiling. I do see two improvement opportunitiess in the living room that are so common that nobody ever sees them. The furniture pieces are pushed up against the walls without relating to each other and most of the wall hangings are placed at eye level for someone standing up, not at eye level when you're sitting in the room using it. These oversights can be fixed by simply moving what you have into different positions. Try it for at least a week and see how you feel about it, then decide. As shown in the most recent photos, people sitting in each of the chairs do not have comfortable eye contact or conversation distance. Create the main conversation group centered on the TV but closer to it. Move the rug and coffee table close to the TV console. Move the big sofa away from the gallery wall so that its front legs are on the rug and you can walk between the sofa back and your gorgeous gallery wall. This is your new aisle to get from the front door to the back of your house. Place the matching black lounge chairs on each side of the sofa with the front legs on the rug if possible. A rug is a good way to anchor three pieces in the middle of the room. It's possible that the TV may be just a little high for viewing from that angle, but lowering the height of the TV to seated-eye-level would help. Mark the wall with removable masking tape to test the height that works for your family. Not having furniture pushed up against all the walls will make the space feel enormous. You could even add a row below and another column on each side of your gallery wall to exaggerate the illusion. Move the large white lounge chair in front of the stair, angled toward the fireplace. An ottoman would make a nice foot rest or a second seat. The floor lamp and a small drink table would make a cozy reading nook. If the hyde-rug is not large enough to anchor the sofa and lounge chairs, it would be really cute under the front legs of the big white chair to define the reading nook. I really like the movement of the lines in the hyde-rug with the movement of the sculpture lines of the TV console. Both are beautiful. The verticality of the plant and candlesticks seems to be fighting the horizontal painting. Try taking the painting off the wall, turn it vertical and rest it on the mantel leaning against the wall. Place it off-center under the brightest spot lit by your ceiling light. Then play with the placement of your candle sticks. The plant might be better somewhere else. A hack hanging pictures is to wait until it is dark outside, turn the TV on, then turn the lights on one by one. You may decide to add, rearrange, remove, brighten or dim your lights before adding art that would be lit by your lights. I love that you put a picture light above the gallery wall. Consider adding the same light to the other picture columns. Be open to washing a wall with light behind a plant to show off its silhouette. Repeat this trick in a few places for consistency . It is a good trick next to a TV because it does not interfere with TV viewing. And it might be really cool to wash the wall behind your TV console with light to emphasize its sculptural qualities. And if you decorate for the holidays, keep in mind how you would move furniture and lights around. Consider adding very small lamps under the kitchen cabinets or wall-washing-lights behind plants to add depth and a brighter warmth than your current under cabinet lights. I bet it is so cozy in there after dark. There are still a lot of pendant lights in your open-plan kitchen. The quantity of pendant wires distract me rather than the lamps themselves. Eventually consider changing some to recessed down-light fixtures. I prefer not being able to see the lightbulbs because glare hurts my dry eyes. I prefer to see the brightness of the thing being lit and not see the light bulb. Emphasizing the light on your surfaces would leave the pendant wires and ceiling vents with less light on them. Once you see these details, you won't be able to "un-see" them. You have such a beautiful large house and you have such good taste and fashion sense. You don't need tips on design at all. I hope these tips on space perception and lighting give you a few more tools to work with. I love all your videos. ❤

Something to consider for mantle is leaning a large artwork then lean smaller pictures or art, or use a small book holder to hold a coordinating framed photo. Interior design channels (range of different styles) that might give you some ideas: Caroline Winkler; Nick Lewis; Paige Wassel; Reynard Lowell; Valentina, Maria Killam. These all have different tastes but give interesting advice and most tend to explain why something “works” or doesn’t. My two cents: I would get a big rug that touches the front of your couch and the furniture on opposite to create more of a seating “zone”. If it has colours, that could also kick off the colour scheme. Could be neutral too e.g. jute with your cow skin layered on top. Thanks for sharing. Have fun!

The shelf on the corner with the family pictures looks like a shrine. That looks better on those long tables that are used by the door with like your mirror on top. Maybe the same frame and put your family in it. That mirror you have you could have used it as in the hallway or your room as a vertical, next time. Also it was hung too high over the sofa. I personally like my trim in a semi-gloss white paint. So that it pops out, also easier to clean. You can even add a couple more pillows for a total of four on the sofa.( My cell phone looks a lot like yours except that in burgundy, and it has that same detail on the seat area.) The rule of three they say they always better. I know it's bad to have feather pillows but I love the way they stay on my leather sofa.

Heeeeeeyyyy!! I really enjoyed this! Bathrooms are fun to repaint because they're generally so small 😅. I am CRAZY about yours!! PLUS the crazy art gives someone something to gaze on & reflect upon. I think we're all tired of the ingredients to the hairspray 😬😵‍💫😄 I desperately want to repaint my LR, but don't think I can talk my husband into it. 😄 I am mostly disabled because of my back and miss my painting days! If you want to know more about it, go back & read my reply (after yours) to the woman's comment about whichever way the windows are facing determines cool or warm colors. Smh Oh! I almost forgot! Looking at your mantle, it may not feel right because there is no focal point? The painting blends away so that the bold things that are on the shelf really stand out. It kinda looks like a hole in the middle? I don't know.... I'm not a designer, I just play one on TV 😎 Oh! By the way.... I was watching another one of your videos a couple of days ago when my husband came in. He LOVES your hair! 😉 Make it a great day!

Color pattern texture shine… the gold tone picks up your floor Add some natural textures .. a large cowhide would be interesting. Consider slip covers for your chairs in a light color and your art & pictures are all out of proportion. Consider going much larger. Small spaces especially in an entry deserves a wow moment

I second that. Tips that I remember from Caroline's videos and that could help with the mantle are: variation in height and scale. For example the three identical golden candlesticks IMO are too similar in height, I would use only one and combine it with a more dainty object. Groups of three things are pleasing, some symmetry, but also breaking it up. Mantles are actually great for experimenting. I think your other changes are great improvements, the colors, the handles in the kitchen, the light fixtures - well done, Anna!

Yet another person chiming in about your mantle quandary. I think you're getting close with the tall candlesticks on one side and the plant on the other. Your other experiments tend to have tall things on each side of the picture, and I think you want tall on one side, and short and wide on the other. Maybe try just the gold/brass toned candlesticks on one side, leaving out the silver piece. Then the plant on the other side, but without the books which add too many distracting additional colors. The room is definitely coming together.
@melaniekuehn7011

I think the coffee table books on the mantel are too colorful. Maybe you can find some nice books with a spine with gold, black, white or cream only. The plant and candle sticks I like. I would add something seasonal in that color scheme. Right now I have a golden glass pumpkin that lights up out. For Christmas you could put a nutcracker or some Christmad ornament up but also in subtle colors that go with the rest.

i love the makeover. everything looks so much brighter and cleaner. The mantle i suggest taking everything off until you find something you really love. the books look messy and the plant does not really help. you got a plane picture so keep it sleek and simple and just keep the mantle without anything for now. The kitchen looks very nice however the witan light shade does not at all match the decor. the kitchen is sleek and modern with white and black. the witan light fixture is more tropical. I would reconsider that for something else. Lastly, please paint the dinning room and take away the black walls. I know that looks like a lot of criticism but it really is not. overall i think all your changes look really nice.

Super sad that you sold the mirror, I guess if you had spray paint the mirror frame gold e simple had put that over the fireplace would already look better, even silver as was would look good, but as you sold the mirror, why don’t you try to get wood candle holders (dark wood) instead metal ones and the green plant that you had in the video, would probably give you the warmth and enough contrast to make you like it
