9. “Living Room Music” by John Cage
Musicians: Matt Flanders, Brian Cannady, Julian Loida, and Cameron Leach
ABOUT:
A student run interdisciplinary collective made up of musicians, dancers, and visual-artists, The Chautauqua Inter-Arts Collective, formed at the start of the summer to brainstorm what its concert would be about. The artists asked themselves what their theme should be: what does it mean to be at Chautauqua? What do we bring to Chautauqua that isn’t currently being done? The collective quickly realized that it was the need to express oneself that had brought them together; the desire to collaborate with other artforms and muddle the boundaries between disciplines. These young artists hungered for an outlet to tell their story, the zeitgeist of an artist in the 21st century.
Zeitgeist:
noun, zeitgeist, ˈtsīt-ˌgīst
The defining spirit or mood of a particular period of history as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time.
Artistic Director: Julian Loida
Co-Directors: Kevin Gupana and Kyle Johnson
A/V: Stephen Rudman
Video Released on August 20, 2016.

That's deep and clever, all of it. Cage is out there but accessible. The singing is indeed rapping, for example. The legend of Cage blurs the reality of his musical abilities.

I wish someone besides myself would break into percussive music at my dining room table.

This sounds like something written in 1970 not 1940!

Shades of James Joyce. The musicality of Joycean prose and Cage’s minimalism is just right.
