Minimalism really had a grip on people in the last decade, didn't it? I grew up with a dad who only wanted white walls in the house (and worse, the stark cold white) and frankly, hated it. Once I moved in with my husband, I got the freedom to choose wall colors of two rooms, and I went for orange/gray accents and green/gray accents. Each room in the house is a different color/gray and the furniture wood shade is also varied room to room (dark gray, sonoma, etc). This way each room has a personality but still matches as a unit.

I have the same couch in blue -- be careful about keeping it in front of a window though. the velvet will fade! an option is to have a blanket over the area that gets the most sun exposure. But just wanted to pass that along! Love how the room turned out.

There are also UV protection sprays suitable for fabric. I think even good old scotchguard makes one. Although always do a hidden test patch. Especially with velvets.

This woman is living my dream. So much hard work, but the satisfaction she must feel for every project completedmust be surreal. Also, I love how she said that she’s making her home a place that she loves, not for some hypothetical future buyer. Too many people fall into the trap of doing things to increase market value, instead of for their own love of it. I've seen a lot of home makeover videos and most of them are very "on trend" style wise, like stuff you'd see in a catalog or on pinterest. And that makes me enjoy your videos a hundred times more, because you're not doing the same things I see everywhere else! I love the color combinations! It’s not a huge room so you have to make the best choices for livability. A piano means no seating for TV viewing for the whole family. So the second couch makes sense, even if it’s blocking the faux fireplace. What a cozy retreat! When you’re not watching a show on TV, you can play one of those fireplace screen savers & pretend!

When I saw the original finished living room, I was like, "oh, this is cute", but I also couldn't help but think it didn't fully fit the vibe of the Emma room and that the layout seemed unfinished. I also kept focusing on those mismatching curtains against the couch and how the couch didn't seem like it was pulling as much focus as it deserved, considering it's so freaking gorgeous. I honestly assumed you were going to go back and change things later, but I didn't expect it in this video. I'm so glad you went back to rearrange and add some stuff because the actual finished project is stunning! It just shows how allowing ourselves to take the time and really let our ideas marinate before executing them makes such a huge difference. A lesson to me as well to just take my time and let inspiration come naturally. The two couches, with one being pink and the other green work so well together, and the little side table and lamp (with yes, the very necessary tassels added) in between just look so nice together in the space. Bookshelves are always a win, especially with the focus on Frida and allowing the books to be the artwork. The other artwork on the walls is gorgeous and so fitting as well. And plants! Always a nice touch. That mirror is truly spectacular and unique. I've never seen anything like it, but now I want one. What a great find. Overall, I just think the room is so you, and anyone who hates on your design choices can buzz off. It's not their house, and you're putting so much effort and thought into all of these spaces to really capture a specific mood and style tailored to your specific tastes. That is something to be admired. I'm just really loving this house series, and can't wait for the next one!

Great job! Been following your house journey for a while now. I am 3 years into restoring an 1880s farmhouse in Indiana. It's in similar condition as yours, the 60s, 70s, and 80s galore! Once again, BEAUTIFUL work designing this room. I love that even though the Article sofa is new and luxurious, it doesn't seem out of place with all your preloved decor and furniture! The pieces look like they were made for each other. All of your renovation videos are so inspiring. I moved from my new construction white and grey house to a house from the 1980s that needs work. Because of your videos I decided to have some fun with this place and add some color! I painted the lower cabinets in my kitchen a bright blue and am prepping to paint my master bathroom a rich sage and pale mauvey-pink!
