Hey guys! I'm Alexandra Gater and I show you how to do rental-friendly upgrades and DIY projects on a budget. New videos every Saturday! Exactly. I would have been tempted to paint the contact paper on the top of the wall that mauve color of the wallpaper. I love that you show those of us with stuff don't have to go minimalist and that you mix looks because that is real. I don't have too many friends who has everything white, capusle wardrobes, no hobbies, no collections and perfectly coordinated all same time period furniture. Just saying..

I was SHOOK by the final result, absolutely gorgeous! My only feedback is that I don't think it's fair to say the coffee table is so inexpensive when you only include the cost of materials, and not the cost of labor. Graham is clearly very talented and has all of the needed skills and tools needed to make the custom pieces. So just saying... yes the materials were cheap but average viewer could not create!

Very true, Heather! I am lucky to have a family member that’s a carpenter and owns a shop - if I had to paid for my one of kind real wood bench - it would have costs me 1,000 bucks. Labor costs isn’t cheap!

Absolutely my favorite episode ever. There was drama, suspense, comedy, all of it... When James said that he was inspired by Florence Welch's home, I knew this was going to be great. Graham WAS the MVP of the episode, with all his wood wizardry. James's apartment was already so cute, but you guys made it in-cre-di-ble! My only thing is that I really thought you were going to put in a little shelf where the wallpaper cuts off, but then you didn't. I'm guessing that you weren't allowed to drill, of course, but I just kept thinking that a little floating shelf would have been the best. But other than that, this was so beautiful and so characterful, that I'm jealous. I want to live in Montreal, and be friends with James and live in his beautiful new living room/dining room/office.

I really appreciate the honesty about what happened with the wallpaper. Not everything happens always exactly as we picture them in our minds and that’s fine! James swearing then realizing he's just making more work for himself to edit things out was so funny. Graham is worth his weight in gold, I swear. Let's be honest, that coffee table DYI is $20+ the cost of Graham's labour, which is fast becoming priceless. I feel like the makeovers have really gone to another level now that you have a dedicated person to create custom pieces for the spaces. Wow! You had a stunning apartment to work with, and you made it even better. Love the contact paper on the windows. I think I would have added it to the door as well. I guess I'm boring, but I would have placed a couch on the shorter wall with an end table and lamp on either side. Putting the TV on a swivel bracket would allow James to watch TV while sitting on the couch or at the dining table. I'm sure it would have been tricky, but that wavy-framed mirror would look good hanging horizontally above the couch. A long bench, maybe with storage, could go under the windows. Since it wouldn't be as deep as the couch it would add seating and allow for good traffic flow. So many options...

This makeover was so fitting for both James and the space! Can't believe you went through that whole fiasco with the wallpaper, then found a really good solution with the halfsies and the architectural detail, but then didn't mention the pure genius final touch of the textural piece and the art on the wall; the way the weaved piece is placed over both the wall paper and the paint is perfection.

I found out a trick to make permanent wallpaper into a temporary paper. It is to outline the edge of of each panel with blue painters tape, THEN, double side tape (extra sticky) on top of the blue tape. Add random pieces of the combo (blue painters/double side tapes) to secure centers of wallpaper so it doesn’t buckle. Hope that makes sense.

Such a great makeover and this apartment is typical Montreal architecture!! Although I always like to mention: What a lot of people outside of Quebec don't know tho is that we've been through a huge housing crisis in the past years and rent has skyrocketed immensely, as well as people being illegally evicted by what we call here "renovictions", which is landlords kicking out tenants that pay cheap and affordable rent just so they can sneakily up the rent by 300$-500$ for new tenants for people from outside the country/the province :( still alot of people from more expensive cities move to Montreal thinking it's so affordable even now but I think it's important they know that rent was under 1k 3 or 4 years ago!!

@@emlevy5792 oh that I noticed, yes! It's just also that Montreal has a reputation across Canada to be the cheapest biggest city to live in, but for native Montrealers, it just isn't true. Most of my friends are terrified to move out because everything is overpriced and not matching the cost of life. To an outsider tho, it still seems cheap because big cities in Canada, especially Toronto, have been going to shit since a long time ago.

Wow. Simply STUNNING! This is not my style at all so I didn’t think I’d like it but I love your videos and had to give it a watch anyways and I’m so glad I did. This looks absolutely incredible. You guys killed it with the half wallpaper look honestly what a great fix and looks intentional! The little James caricature on top of the half wall above his workspace is such a cute idea! I feel the rent problems. I live in the states (Milwaukee, WI) and it is like upwards of 1,500/month for a studio apartment in a not sketchy area. The price of rent also does not including parking (could be an extra 50-150/month) or utilities. Rising rent cost are a HUGE problem. Thank you for keeping it real on the channel. Love how this makeover turned out though!

Best makeover yet! Your team's down to earth, "can do" attitude makes me feel like I, too, can feel free to experiment with style in as bold a way as life invites. PLUS the best way to field a naysayer crack is to make it into an art print. Love the "design sandwich". I plan to buy one and hang it in my home. Right out the gate, guests will know I have decided not to take myself too seriously. Design is Fun! 😍
