I agree. Was using alcohol for the wrong reasons. I found that at first it helped anxiety and mood but it eventually made things worse. It’s not a great idea to drink to stuff your emotions because they come back worse.

I agree with what you said about how people think "once an alcoholic always one." I've seen people form their entire identity on how many days, years, in a row they did not drink. I've never been one to find it right to count the days...Yet those same people, once they break that streak for one day, I've seen it destroy them. Now they think somewhere along the lines of "well, Im back at step one," but I personally don't see it that way. If you've gone 5,000 days and happened to screw up one of those, you are not back at square one. I don't know why people think about it in this way.
@TimothyWard4 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree with you more Mathew. I wish more people viewed each sober day as a win and didn't focus on how many days they have gone without a drink. That outlook is a recipe for feeling of guilt and self doubt when the inevitable relapse takes place.
@delonoliver89203 жыл бұрын
I agree. How can u be starting for scratch when u have gained so much experience in those 5000 days sober...lol...have to change da way I look at it. I do believe tho that some ppl cannot drink at all I'm 1 of them... best of wishes to u all. Nice work Tim.
@MsSheilaC6 ай бұрын
Two things I learned help me frame this. I would see it as “5000 days sober…. minus one”. Lets you keep the accomplishment while acknowledging the slip, but not beating yourself up because there’s no productivity in that. And there’s this quote; “Keep quitting, until you quit for good”.

You are correct, it gets easier. I started drinking as a teenager and did not stop until I was 46. I didn’t start to smoke cigarettes until I was 28 and also stopped at 46. I would say the first month was easy then it was harder and then with every day it got easier. I also prayed a lot and it took about a year before I just picked a date and stopped. Now I might have a drink once or twice a year. I cannot have even one cigarette or I know I will be hooked again. I don’t know why but even if I talk about a cigarette my mouth waters😂weird. You learned a lot younger than me. Way to go!!! Stay well and be Blessed!

“…Equals a whole smidge” 😂 Thank you for this video. I am two weeks in and this is my logic process as well. It was a daily habit that wasn’t serving me anymore. And the minute I consciously realized that, I stopped and I haven’t had cravings. And I too relate to wanting to get back to more like my childlike thinking because there’s freedom in that.

When I’m by myself the thought of intoxication is very rare. But when I’m around other people, especially when they have marijuana, alcohol, or nicotine, the urge just gets so intense… And I’m a teenager. I think I’ve become accustomed to friends = intoxication. Which probably isn’t good.

I completely agree with you about those negative sayings that deter people from even starting the sobriety journey. If people assume it will always be difficult then of course it seems easier to numb your emotions with alcohol as much as you need to. I love the way you talked about giving your brain "new data" and new options to get away from the ritual of drinking/coping. I firmly believe in letting your brain soak in all the info and not rushing your own growth process ...because with a little patience and self-acceptance, eventually it all kind of clicks, and staying committed makes you feel *joyful* instead of overwhelmed. Really great video with lots of excellent truths!!

My biggest trigger is cooking dinner. I’m a stay at home mom with a family to cook for every night. Come 5 o’clock I get really anxious knowing that I’m either going to have wine and be mad at myself. Or I’m going to try not to and then be really irritable. Then sitting on the couch until bedtime watching tv is torture too. I want to relax and enjoy my evenings like a normal person and enjoy cooking again. I cook dinner in the morning often to avoid the trigger, but that’s not sustainable. Thanks for your videos.
@TimothyWard3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing your story here Ms. Dude. I totally see your dilemma and where you are coming from. You just want to have an enjoyable evening but in order to do that you must drink. But you also want to quit. This is one of those cycles that drinking puts us into. The good news is that the cycle is breakable, the not so good news is that breaking it means going through quite a few of those irritable nights of torture. But all those nights will be worth it when you can finally cook dinner and enjoy your evenings without the urge to drink!
