Nice tips. I'm looking to upgrade my mono shock from stock pogo stick. It's confusing the amount of adjustments there are to look for, and they all use vague marketing. So far I've encountered that you can get adjustments for: 1. Length (rider height) 2. Preload (some offer hydraulic preload) 3. Compression (rate) 4. Rebound (rate) And it doesn't end there, as some offer internal Nitrogen gas, and some external in a separate piggyback chamber, but they don't mention which is better or why. It would also be nice if they offered each model with a spring in a colour match for your bike. Some offer variations, but most are just one colour, usually yellow.

Sagar, technical question - Compression and rebound would need to vary by speed for better performance, right?
@powerdriftofficial7 жыл бұрын
We are glad there are Automotive Nerds around! Makes for a good conversation :D - The Answer is both yes and no. Compression and Rebound would need to vary by Speed, Surface et all. Hence the World of Adaptive Suspension exists. However these systems when it comes to Motorcycles are a bit futuristic (for now) Ducati's Sky-Hook, BMW's DDC etc are interesting evolution in this context
@14vimalk7 жыл бұрын
Wow, I was thinking exactly this "the system constantly strives to keep the chassis stable in relation to an imaginary datum point in the air above the bike" I can relate to riding on the roads around Alibag a few days ago. There were innumerable potholes and my strategy was to go fast enough to not let it rebound much :D And when there were gravelly off road patches, I was going "Grip the ground dammit! Stick to it like @#$%"

for all bikes that have adjustable suspension. its like this???
@catalystreactionsbw5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the principles are all the same, but the adjusters might be in different places. They are just taps to manage oil flow, close them to slow the oil and thus the movement, open them to increase movement and flow. On the forks, as he said, traditionally the compression adjuster is at the base of both forks near the brake calipers, and rebound is in both fork caps. They must be set the same number of turns or clicks out (some adjusters have click settings) from closed (righty tighty, lefty loosey). Traditionally on shocks it is the reverse, compression is at the top of the shock and rebound at the base. His Z1000 only has rebound at the base. Another common fork configuration is to have rebound in the right fork cap and compression in the left cap (like the Ohlins Road & Track forks found on many bike brands as stock, but upgraded equipment). When labeled, compression is always labeled "com" or "comp", but rebound can be labeled either "reb" or "ten" for "tension". On some shocks, aftermarket or upgraded stock equipment from the base model (typically Ohlins), both adjusters are on the top of the shock. The standard color coding is black for rebound and gold for compression. Some shocks and forks have both low speed and high speed compression, usually the former is a flat blade screw in the center of the latter, a hex nut. Some shocks have a knurled ring at the base of the shock, around the shock shaft, which you turn to adjust rebound. Again righty tighty as you look up at the shock from the ground, and they always click. You always count your clicks or turns out from fully closed, for example, you might set your rebound 2 clicks out, or your compression 2 and 1/4 turns out. Finally, never close an adjuster completely and then ride (or do test bounces), always back out at least 1 click or 1/8 of a turn. If you ever require such settings to make the suspension work properly, the first trouble shooting step is a shock/fork service (new oil).
