Sometimes the reason an idea that many people have thought of are untapped because they require a lot of resources, shifting consumer behavior, working with legal regulations. And sometimes ideas are just too early to be successful even if the concept is solid. Thinking about how LaserDisc failed but DVDs conquered home video.

I work at a certain major "organic supermarket" and when I first started working there I was appalled to see that they were throwing away "spoiled food" (i.e. food that is still edible but doesn't "look good") in the garbage. With an app like this, I hope that supermarkets and restaurants don't throw away food that doesn't "look good" but sell it to people who don't care about the "appearance of food" and eliminate food waste!

You love your quotes, don't you? 😂😂😂 I worked at McDonald's in high school and was also surprised by food we'd throw away. The mandate was that any food that was cooked had to be thrown away if it wasn't sold within 10 minutes. The reality is, quality really does go down for certain products if you don't eat it right away. If you eat McDonald's fries that are 30 minutes old, they're awful and I've seen situations where customers have brought fries back because someone tried to sneak and sell them fries older than, let's say, 20 minutes. Stores would rather throw away food than have a reputation for selling food that's not the best.

In Massachusetts we have something called Daily Table its a small space selling supermarket foods thats on its way out with date and appearance the chefs in the back making soups, sandwiches, salads and other items. NO food business should EVER throw away ANY [usable] food when millions of people are food-insecure and rely on food pantries and soup kitchens for their food. As a longtime volunteer at both, we receive food for free from food banks, supermarkets, farms, restaurants, stadium concessions and more - and those businesses get tax write-offs for their donations.

Salvage food stores help eliminate food waste too. Sometimes the retailers have excess stock, the box may be bent or torn (but the bag and contents are intact), it’s a seasonal item that may be a Valentine’s Day food item that’s still perfectly good or the can may be bent. Those stores help customers save money and keep perfectly good food from going into landfills. I’m glad there’s a business that does that for restaurants and bakeries.

@@intrepidfox37 I was at Grocery Outlet in downtown L.A. today. To my disappointment, they were obviously going to be throwing away most of the organic bananas: They were far from the produce dept, and the ones that needed to be sold soon were relegated to the lower half (the display unit was a stack of round shelves) where I had to almost kneel on the floor to look through them. The older ones should have been at eye-level so customers would grab them first. Since most crime is still not prosecuted, there was also a theft. One wine bottle. The last time I was at Smart & Final, a whole cartload was walked out the front door unpaid.

As a restaurateur, the concept of Too Good To Go seems great, but the reality is different. Restaurants are required to offer at least 3 items daily, even if there’s no surplus, forcing us to adjust inventory and buy extra ingredients just to meet the platform’s demands. This doesn’t actually reduce waste and often leads to additional costs. On top of that, restaurants pay a fee for every order, meaning we barely profit, if at all. Customers benefit, and Too Good To Go earns from the system while maintaining a positive image, but it can hurt restaurant revenue, especially when customers wait for discounted items instead of ordering normally. Some places even create special items just for the platform, turning it into more of a marketing tool than a waste-reduction initiative. It’s up to you to decide if this approach aligns with the idea of reducing food waste.

5:05 I have to say that sadly my experience with the App was poor. I think your experience will vary greatly on where you live - I live in Madrid, and even in the Spanish capital, I was very dissapointed with the quality, amount and success in getting food. 3 times my order was canceled just 15mins before pickup by the bakery in my neighbourhood. I also tried 2 restaurants in the neighboorhood, and paid the equivalent of $10USD for a side salad, bottled drink, and soup...keep in mind the app tells you that you'll get double, sometimes triple the value of what you'll pay, and yet for $10USD I could have gotten better, hotter or fresher food rather than the leftovers I received. All this said, I think you really have to be lucky and live in a spot where there are many Too Good To Go businesses that really offer value.

I use the app for more than 6 years in France. With time you start to see who really sell good food, who tries to give spoiled food, who prepares food specific for the application. It's an excellent initiative. After receiving the package, I also give away food that I won't, can't eat. I hope there were more control over businesses to limit frauds: I encountered several times shadow businesses that don't even exist but selling ghost packages...

My wife used something similar a few weeks ago, was $18 value from a taqueria so figured great a burrito meal or something, and it was only $6. She came back with a take out box that the woman made on the spot (translation: it wasn't "surplus food") and was two tacos, a side of beans and rice. My thought was "That's $18? Good lord, there's one place I'm not going to eat" As for food going into landfills, maybe if local municipalities would have some large scale food waste composting program it wouldn't, just saying. Here our "green bin" is not just yard waste but anything food related.

There are some cities that do have compost, but then someone has to do something with it. Like, bag it, then transport it, till it into the soil, etc. I'd say having people eat what's been cooked and prepared is probably best. Plus so cities have compost at the sewage plants, so might as well make a turd with it 1st and then compost it.

To an extent. It’s literally impossible not to waste anything in the food business without violating health codes.

Ok I just downloaded the app and I’m a bit disappointed with the selection. It’s mostly just bakeries and not many places offering real food options 😢

This is just simply beautiful. I am not Italian but make the Italian gesture of closing fingertips together and kissing them to my lips with the "Mwah. Bellissimo.'' I am not God, but I think those who worked on this and the creator of this model and app are going to have some good deeds from this on their Scales to say the least. Glory to God.

I remember homeless shelters and food banks could get some of this food. But it was difficult for them. Why can't homeless and poor families have it for free ?

It's the distribution costs. Customer's here come up and pick it up. Food banks also need things that hit certain nutritional requirements. This is way more flexible and easier for stores.

@@thegreat9481 Here in germany we have the "Tafel" in many citiys. They collect the leftover food and give it for free. They are the main competitor here in germany and are not happy about them, because many people that use this service do not need it.

Why don't you buy food for the poor and homeless and let other people and businesses be free to do what they want without your guilt trip projection?

Around here in Texas, this excess food goes to food banks. The store double dips as a charity donation and they charge off the food as waste. So, do you have no people that reply of food banks there?

This is not a good deal for small businesses only bigger operations with lower food and packaging cost. The fees the restaurant pays eats away any money that would offset the food waste.

This shows us that food shouldn't be so expensive, it is just that retailers are to greedy and hold to food till is too late. Were I live, most bakeries do this, they sell old bread cheaper. It should be like this for everything.

What would help the grocery store reduce waste, would be for them not to order so much in for first place. They order more than anyone can possibly buy and eat. Also, It would be good if you could use this type of service without an app, which seniors are not very good at using. This is a good service, but once again, like all of these services, it is restricted to certain sectors of the population, and people who need it the most, are left out, which is usually the case with a lot of these start up companies. They do not believe in servicing everyone.

I remember picking up Meal from a hotel restaurant and instantly regretting it, the price was higher than I could have gotten something myself from the supermarket , but the only problem is they treated the discount like I was a customer in the restaurant and that’s the problem!
