Great video Stef. This is exactly where EV's are great. Most people day to day aren't driving over 50 miles, let alone 100. Having an EV for the day to day and then a combustion (or hybrid) for the few occasions a year you do big drive is the short term future.

Unpopular opinion, I’m a seasoned EV user and have been driving/owning EV’s for 6+ years now, I’m tempted to swap back to a petrol/ICE vehicle. Although the EV is “cheaper” to run it’s just too inconvenient and faffing every time we go away (a few times a month) also I do want to quickly add that although my EV has been cheaper to run the depreciation has been so severe it’s negated almost all fuel savings we’ve had during our ownership. In hindsight a Hybrid would have been a better all round solution for us from a cost and convenience standpoint

I drive an eTron 55, 31,000 miles in 15 months, often on long road trips. Get Octopus Go with a smart meter for your Pod Point, my current rate (4hrs in the middle of the night is 7.5p per kW). So it would cost me around £202 per annum to fully fuel your mini, where you pay £648! I have calculated huge savings with the eTron against my previous Discovery Sport (petrol) such that using home charge, I spend around 10% of the previous fuel costs and on long trips (first 200 miles home charge) it is around 35% of the previous fuel costs. 500 miles a day is easy, charging not a problem, I just know where to stop. I stay at hotels with destination charging, if I can, and that saves me much more.The Etron has saved me over £4,500 in that time with 35% home charging and 55% public charging.

EXCELLENT review- I bought a SE 5 months ago (My first Mini) and I have to say it is one of the best cars I have ever owned (and I have owned some amazing cars from a Triumph TR7/Z4MC/Audi A6 and currently a Merc SL- wife M2) My commute to work is 50 miles back and forth. YES I wish it had 150 mile range but I would assume that 98% of people who buy an SE have resolved the 100 mile range before they buy. I Have had 3 VW GTIs in the past and this is a BETTER car than those! My wife and I LOVE the legendary Mini go-kart driving feel. Its very fast in that EV frictionless way - almost too fast for the suspension lol - and we use standard 110v charging as overnight easily gets us to work and back (We work at the same place) in the hot Texas heat we dont lose range. LOVE the thick steering wheel and the colored binnacle (but the ev range number is obviously an afterthought as it is tiny) Bottom line we thought that this would be a place holder until the new model but not so sure we are going to "upgrade" love this car as is- and the new one wont have the colored binnacle - just the cheesy "heads up" display and the large cent circle of course. Oh and I have mention that this car is rattle free and built like a tank. Great work BMW engineers and Brit factory workers!

So excited to see this in my inbox today! My fiancé and I just preferred two SE Minis. Out commute is about 30 miles three times a week. Free charging at work and plenty of charging options in Austin TX, including our home. For us, a super long range does no matter-we wouldn’t like road trips, we’d rather fly. Perfect car for us!

We love the EV MINI, such a perfect commuter. We understand a bigger battery would make the car to heavy thus removing the go-kart feel of the MINI. If only they did a full electric Countryman

If you have a smart meter at home, you can go on an overnight tariff at a much cheaper rate. For example, Octopus Energy have a 7.5p per kW rate between 12.30-04.30, making savings much higher. I have a Mini Electric coming soon, but my Nissan Leaf costs around £3.00 per week for my 150 miles weekly commute.

Nice real-world review Stef. I'm a fairly seasoned EV owner driver of the last 4/5 years having covered tens of thousands of miles on electricity (pure BEV). You're absolutely right the hike in electrified sales is far greater than the rate of infrastructure expansion however planning is the key to success with an EV. Get a home wallbox where possible, use the supermarket free charging (7kw) early hours when people are not in peek shopping times, talk to your employers about rota'd charging and more importantly than anything, adjust driving styles to be more energy consumption conscious if one is concerned about charging stations and charge times - by hooning around getting two cars ahead in busy traffic saps so much power and doesn't gain enough time back when you consider you'll spend 5 to 10 minutes charging the car to gain those 5 miles of range back that just got cained on a spirited overtake. I've got a couple of EV owner driver videos on my channel too in which I discuss usage and driver styles. I'm awaiting delivery of a Polestar 2 Performance next week which offers reasonable range, plenty of power and some interesting design language. As you've said Stef, EVs have a place but the Government need to do more to support the shift and manufacturers need to do more on pricing once battery chemistry and tech becomes more mainstream. I moved from a Giulia to a 500e and it's hilarious fun! Decent range and it's quicker in real world than the Giulia, no hesitation, gear change or turbo lag, just instant torque and ensuing hilarity! Plus it's lightweight, engaging and pretty oomphy with its 100kW motor(140bhp)

So jealous. The 500e is like 5-10x cuter than the MINI SE. but the Fiat is not sold in Canada though. Love my MINI in the summer. Hate the winter tires which drastically reduced range

It is even a smaller battery than 36kWh, it is 32.6 with 28.9kWh usable.

The best financial decision I’ve ever made was getting a Tesla Model 3 long range. I charge from home overnight at 5p KwH and I am saving around 6k-8k a year for the mileage I do by not going to the petrol station. I will never own a ICE car again.

Just be aware the way you was parked on the teslar charger would have Obstructed someone parking next to you so if you can always use the end stalls, Also not all of the charges are 61 pence if you click on any of the others in the UK, the cost is Revelent to the speed of the charger, hope this helps others.

Its amazing how using an app at an independent charger is a faff but at a Tesla charge is not a faff...... Plus many chargers now accept contactless payments

I’m driving over 100 miles a day, the Mini is not only my primary car, it’s my work car. Get an EV tariff at home and you can charge for less than 10p per kWh. In spending £30 per month to drive 2000 miles.

I can see the attraction of an EV at the moment, especially if you are using it for shorter runs and have a driveway. However, as EV take up continues the government is going to need to replace the revenue it is no longer receiving from petrol and diesel fuel. Expect road pricing very soon!

Road Tolls are likely to appear within the next 3 years, and will be payable by most if not all vehicles. There is no fairer system than transferring the tax to actual road *usage* rather than the fuel itself...

Dude, get yourself a smart meter and drop your tariff to 7.5p between 0030 and 0430. Cut your fuel costs a great deal. Worked out my old swift that claimed 50-60mpg compared to my new electric kona is £1250 on the petrol, vs £150 for the EV over 9000 miles.

The Mini should be able to take 100 KWh rate??? I love our Mini. It is perfect for our needs as we rarely go anywhere beyond 30 miles. It's bloody fast & loads of fun to drive too!

In the Netherlands energy prices have risen over 100%. Right now using Superchargers is cheaper or the same price as home charging for most people. Unless you are able to benefit from your solar panels of course.

Hi, please don't be offended but I just wanted to give you a "nudge" as to your fuel to electric usage calculation as you worked it out incorrectly. £81 fuel per week X 52 weeks per year = £4212. Whereas.... £13.50 charge per week X 52 weeks per year = £702. Giving a saving of £3510 per year. Which is still a Damn good saving!!

Or 9000 miles = 2000kwh in my electric kona vs 180 gallons in my old swift or 810 litres. 2000kwh on my octopus go tarrif of 7.5p overnight = £150 for the year Vs 810L x 1.88 =£1522. Huge £1350 per 9000 miles (my annual use last year)

I can get 400+ miles on my tank of petro (gas). A full electric charge gets you ~80 miles. Did you account for the 4 to one difference in miles before needed to fill up (whether gas or electric)

I love this car as an idea. But my drive is 55km to wrk each day so 110km per day. This does not include maybe getting lunch or driving to see suppliers or some other thing. So I want a mini that gets 200+ km minimum in winter. For approx $35,000 Canadian.

A major factor for me is the price difference of an ICE vehicle compared to the same EV vehicle. Looking online a EV Mini can be £10k more therefore any saving on fuel is spent on the initial purchase price OR +£100pcm.

The Mini hatch range starts from £22,565 for a Cooper £24,900 is you spec the car the same as a level 2 Mini electric, though this car is a Cooper S which when specked the same as my Mini electric costs £27,090. So no not a £10K difference at all.

Interesting video. However, I won’t change my 2019 F55 S Sport, which averages 40 mpg consistently. I bought this car for commuting, I’ve had it 2 years. It’s does a great job and my local Mini centre Leicester is great. I like the concept of the electric version, however cost and range anxiety just puts me off.

Can't wait for the liquid hydrogen powered Mini S! Toyota have been trailing the new tech and a converted Racing Corolla was put through its paces in a 24 Hour Race at Fuji Raceway last summer. It means we can all still enjoy the sound and thrill of a combustion engine, but now it's only by product is water! JCB have also created prototypes for their commercial vehicles. I think the future is not all or nothing options for drivers. Maybe battery powered cars (with their expensive rare metals) will be suitable for some, but a far cheaper and more sustainable option is surely going to be liquid green hydrogen powered vehicles. Not hydrogen fuel cells - but actual liquid fuel. These cars will take the same time to refuel as petrol cars - about a 3 minutes - with ranges similar to current petrol car ranges. And the prices for these vehicles (cars & bikes) will eventually be so much cheaper than battery vehicles because they will use recycled technology - the ICE.

LOVED this vlog! I absolutely adore the Cooper S Electrico! Yours in black dethroned looks amazing. I was in the city and a silver one drove past me and I loved it. The price saving is incredible. I have solar panels on my house which would really help. In 2005, I owned an Astro Black Mini Cooper from new fully spec'd. 99% of my driving was motorway and the car was perfect - rock solid, beautifully made. My only disappointment was that the 1.6 petrol engine was not economical. On the motorway at 70-80mph, I got 38mpg or 36mpg with my air con on! Disappointing for a small cat so imagine how much i'd save with the SE. There's a BRAND NEW Mini in 2023/24 and I reckon that we'll see new battery technology / range in it. If only it could do 200 miles on a charge, I'd be happy to do road trips. A friend of mine bought a Tesla 5 last year and adores the EV life. It replaced a Range Rover. His wife loved it so much that she's just bought a new electric Jaguar SUV. They are total converts. The price of fuel now along with the dishonest oil buying etc is a real eye opener to the world and an absolute emergency to go for renewables. Living in a city, I'll be so delighted when there are zero diesel vehicles. The smell and noise of them is simply horrific along with asthma / lung problems caused by it. The Cooper SE is one truly sexy car - it's like an accessory on wheels - as cool as a skateboard, adventurous as my mountain bike and as retro as a pair of Golden Goose basketball sneakers :) :) :)

Another great video! I agree with pretty much all you say, I know!😃 The problem for us is we have one car, the costs of buying/PCP/Leasing a one size (almost) fits all EV are too high. I think a given range of 275 to 300 miles, giving a real world range of 200+would make a difference to a one car household. I know there are cars capable of that, I either don't like them, or too expensive to buy. This is changing, so in 3 or 4 years, when we're due to change, an EV could be on the cards. If we were a two car house, one would be an EV, 100% Either 500e or Mini

Informative video! An Electric Car is great for short distance but as you said the network is not good enough (even with Tesla super chargers). If if you don't have a charger at home, and if you need to make long distance trips, forget it!

Don't be silly. Long trips are straightforward enough if you plan ahead, and use something like ZapMap. KZbin has plenty of videos of people whom have covered longer trips. One guy drove from Scotland to London airport in his Tesla without stopping, to prove it could be done. He even pi$$ed into a bottle to avoid stopping. Naturally, he didn't video that part. Another Scottish Tesla owner dove 600 miles to his holiday destination in Cornwall. He stopped twice to charge. Once for 65 minutes, and the second time for 25 minutes. Not unreasonable stops for a 600 mile trip. The trip cost him £13 in electricity, as he had bought a used Tesla, which gets free Supercharging for life. The other £13 was a non Tesla charger..... And then there were the two guys who, in 2016, drove a Nissan Leaf from John O Groats to Land End - and back again - in 48 hours. A total distance of 1653 miles. They also took a fully electric BMW i3 from Edinburgh to Monte Carlo in 60 hours. They obviously didn't suffer from the limited perceptions of electric cars you seem to have.

8:34 assuming there are 52 weeks per year instead of 48, the annual cost of petrol is £4,212, making a saving of £3,564 (+£412) Nonetheless a very interesting video for me as I start to take more interest in cars, very helpful to learn about :)

At c. 6:15 - Kilowatts, not kilowatt hours. Consumption and output rates are measured in Watts. Battery capacity and total energy consumed are measured in kWh. Your home electricity meter, for example, measures how much electricity you have used, in kWh or 'units'. But your electrical appliances are rated in how many Watts they draw when being used.

Even once the ban on new ICE sales arrives, it will take 15+ years for the pool of older used ICE cars to deplete greatly.....but of course during that time it will become more difficult to obtain petrol and diesel due to petrol stations closing down, or removing the pumps to replace them with EV chargers, as has happened in Norway when Shell did exactly that......

A 'Fat Mini' is a no-no for us, because we only have room for one car, and we need a longer range than it can deliver. It's also a turn-off because it's twice the size of a real Mini. See the two together, and you'll see how bloated it is. With a real-world 250 mile range, and a better name, it might be more interesting.

Great video - as you can likely tell from my avatar I’m a motor head myself yet have been enjoying nearly a year now with a Mini EV. Our second car, a 2007 Mazda 3 was getting rather long in the tooth and the notorious rust issues that generation suffers were finally getting beyond economical to repair. Fuel prices were also starting their skyward climb so we figured why not make the next vehicle an EV? I’ve always loved the Mini styling but would have dismissed the SE out of hand due to the short range. Turns out in our part of central Canada EVs were getting very difficult to find (our local Toyota dealer cited me a 2+ year wait for a RAV 4 hybrid…😮). So, on to the used vehicle market then with similar challenges. No sooner would something appear online and it was snapped up almost instantly. Then a 2021 Mini Cooper SE appeared with low miles almost as I was refreshing a list one day. A quick call and refundable deposit held it long enough to get a test drive arranged and that was it. Love at first mash of the gas, er electron pedal. Here was in a gorgeous little package an extremely rewarding driving experience that when assessed against our daily commuting needs, easily matched the mission if we were really truthful with ourselves. We too have free charging at work that has also been rendered nearly useless due to surging demand. No matter, a dedicated Level 2 charger installed at home (alas our piddly North American regular household 110v would take 24 hours to charge even this little battery) and we’re set. We’ve even ventured out of town several times without much trouble. Turns out that by the time we’ve depleted our range we’re ready for a coffee and a bio break anyway. The news that the Tesla network may now be available I hope is true in Canada. Because despite Elon proving himself over the last year to be an infantile dweeb of the highest order, he certainly can take the credit for pushing the world sharply forth into making EV life possible on a worldwide scale. As for cost savings- we’ve reduced our daily cost of commuting about 90% compared to our ICE commuter. Finally, the reasonable price of this car - several tens of thousands less than the cheapest Tesla, Mustang Mach E etc - means our break even on the premium over another ICE vehicle is just a couple years.

Why at you paying over 20p per kwh to charge at home? EDF have overnight EV charge tariffs at 4.5p per kwh, and Octopus Go! is 7.5p per kwh.

One thing you have not factored in is retained value. Combustion engine cars are a known and calculatable depreciation curve. Ev’s are not.

I like your review of living with Mini EV based on cost , but I am not sure if your numbers add up on the 8:40 of the video. Assuming that with an average diesel mini you get about 450 miles range(could be up to 500 miles with careful driving), and full tank cost £80 to fill, then that should be 450x4=1800 miles per month. Now for the EV side you have shown 4 charging per month, where clearly the range,- as per your comments is average 100 miles per charge, hence 4 charge for 100 miles range is 400 miles per month! Your comparison is not like per like as the EV is driven 4.5 times less than the diesel car per month! The rest is useless self convincing calculations based on the fantasy saving of non existent use of fuel for non driven miles! The true comparison obviously then has to be to compare the same number of miles for the EV too, and that means 1800 miles per month, which means 18 times of charge per month(average range of 100 miles per charge), then the cost of monthly EV charge for the same mileage will be £13.5 x 18 = £243 per month. Admittedly still below the diesel which is good, but the annual saving in comparison will be only the difference between £3800 (for diesel per year) versus £2916 (£243 x 12) which is only £884 saving per year. still a saving, but not the £3152 saving that you have thought. Sorry to break that to you, but most EV calculations normally ignore the fact that you need to compare how many miles you get out of the equivalent fuel and then do the comparison for the same mileage per year.. as much as I like to agree that EVs are good, I think charging 18 times a month is not really practical unless you have a charge at home and do it kind of daily, or an EV that has a comparing mileage like minimum 500 miles range per charge... unfortunately we have to wait for that to happen yet

@@rogermartinez78 for a full charge it can't be that expensive because the battery is very small, something like 32kwh capacity. 24 pence per kwh at home should be £7.68 per charge or in other words per 100 miles of range...so depending on how much you drive, you pay. Also getting that home charging point is costly too. If you are a high mileage driver then EV is better than ICT cars, but otherwise if you are a low mileage driver of say less than 8000 per year then EV is a lot more expensive and not so green

@@coolatzo How do you calculate it not being green from the cost numbers? Using that Volvo study that everybody loves to quote, the Mini electric will be greener than its petrol counterpart after between 15k-30k miles. If you don't do many miles you can easily charge with the supplied 3 pin charge cable as you wont be charging from 0% everyday and get back to 100% very easily overnight. The Mini has 28.9 kwh usable battery so at 24p per kW you are looking at £6.93 for a full charge.

@@Ben.Royals My point for greener car is exactly that. If a car mileage is low like 5000 per annum the extra cost of purchasing an electric car does not justify it green. As you mentioned below 30000 you are still in par with fossil fuel engine not to mention the cost. Consider a low range driver who changes car every three years, then green/EV is more expensive than normal car. Most average family cars are not driven high mileage these days unless you are a sales man who does high mileage. Then it is hard to justify extra buck for something that does not give you much savings in 3 years and not greener neither.

Charging your ev will be more expensive in the near future, governments needs the income.... environment wise there is no reason to by an ev instead of a petrol car.

I think facts argue with that no need statement you made. With EV charging being nearly 4x cheaper than a petrol car, a bit of added tax from the government aint that scary of a point.

Buying petrol or diesel will also be more expensive in the future. There's a 20% plus increase in fuel duty on the way....... If the Government ceased subsidising the oil companies each year with huge taxpayer funded handouts, they'd have a lot more money in their coffers. Mind you, petrol and diesel would double in price... Drivers of ICE cars will really start to be hit once Clean Air Charging zones roll out big time. They'll add £30 to £40 per week onto the cost of running a car or van with an engine, if you need to drive into a town or city each day......

after the very recent electricity price increases, it now costs me around £9 to £10 for a full charge on my EV. It works out at around 3.5 to 4p per mile running costs. Even a tiny little diesel hatchback couldn't get near those per mile costs. It would need to do 150+ mpg.......

Reality there is no financial advantage to EV ownership. It's saved you nothing and never will because you could of bought a real Cooper S for half the price second hand and comparing new 10k cheaper.

@@drewhender3999 Few thousand more is a few years of gas for car of this size. There still no financial advantage to EV ownership, but there certainly a lot of hassle if you want to drive more than a 100 miles from home.

@@Kiwi_Dave So few issues with your points made. 1 the EV Mini is saving him £3500 ish a year over fuel so with 4 years average ownership thats £14000 saved over a petrol Cooper S, there is the price difference even when comparing to a 2016 used Cooper S petrol. 2 the Mini electric will hold it's value better, funny you chose a second hand petrol car but not a second hand EV for your biased comparison, why? 3 if you knew this guys purchase decision, his wife loved the new Mini platform so changed from their A1 when used car prices were crazy high and ended up paying less a month for the Mini, so the Mini is now not only costing them less per month to finance than their previous car, its also much cheaper to run. My Mini electric is cheaper to lease than financing a used Cooper S petrol and is saving me money on fuel costs, potential repair costs and servicing. The price of lithium has gone up but us still averaging $135 per kWh from last years $132 per kWh average and down massively from the 2013 average price of $684 per kWh, so not the sky rocket in price you claim 😂. Your 100 miles from home point isn't really even relevant, if im driving 100 miles to a place im not driving straight back, ill find a destination charger at the location and charge whilst im there. If you are gonna find yourself doing longer journeys, get a bigger range EV or wait for the 231 bhp Mini Cooper SE with 250 miles of range coming later next year. Remember EVs aren't supposed to be about cheaper motoring in the first place, it's just a current benefit. It's about reducing localised emissions and our reliance on fossil fuels.
