I have the your system except my 2018 12.9" iPad Pro equipped it with 512 GB of SSD memory. It is STILL going strong and now is an integral part of my iPad Pro/Studio Display/new M3 Pro/14" MBP. I have found that the Magic Keyboard REALLY impacts battery charge duration. Without it, I still can get over a days use out of the battery.

I definitely should have gone for the 512 initially! How do you like the new M3 pro MBP - I really wanna check it out but not sure if worth the upgrade from an M1 MBP it’s interesting you noticed the battery drain with keyboard too, good to know! Thanks!

@@mananparekh_ Enjoyed your KZbin video post. Now, my MBP uses the unbinned M3 Pro chip equipped w/ 36 GB of unified memory and it has 1 TB SSD storage. The short TL:DR answer to how do I like it is: What's not to like. Grin. Because of the 36 GB of ram, I have not noticed ANY SSD swap usage yet - even when running Windows 11 on ARM via a Parallels Desktop VM configured as a 4 core/8 GB VM. BTW, that VM boots Win 11 in 9 seconds and useful work (like opening MS Excel (it launches in a second) or viewing my Win 11 news widgets begins in 15 seconds from boot up. With all that RAM, everything launches very quickly. viewing photos are almost instantaneous when viewed on my Studio Display. And when I use my iPad Pro as an extra extended display monitor via Sidecar, there are no lags or dropped video frames on the iPad Pro display while I am doing other things on either the Studio Display or that fantastic MBP display. Really, a very nice experience so far.

Yeah I love it! I am curious to see how younger students use their iPads considering Anki has gotten even more prevalent

Glad to see people outside language learning communities know about and utilize tools like anki. Honestly, SRS will be more of a study supercharger than anything else the iPad could give you.

Definitely Anki is a helpful tool, but “one-tool” syndrome definitely can lead a lot of students down the wrong path, especially in medicine m

Super great vid, straightforward. I was pretty sceptical on how long term a device like this was but im pretty happy to know from your perspective atleast. The problems that concerns me about the device can be the battery, I would totally wish to use it for 2 days without killing it. Minor software and keyboard issues. One could say that the storage is simply fixable just by buying 128/256gb storage but ssd's are also an option (compromises form factor). I really loved what you said about productivity, its like a little spark of inspiration atleast for me. I didnt even think about the side hustles you could do like that. In any case, I tried my very best to find an improvised route for the things I would probably lose for not having a laptop (limited budget), like web safari versions of Google-Suites, Procreate dreams, and 6 other apps/uses.
@mananparekh_
@mananparekh_ 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your perspective! I completely agree about the storage being an avoidable issue. Just goes to show that a little money up front can save hours of headache later on. And definitely, iPad opens doors simply because of the pencil and touch screen that other Apple devices just can’t. That reason alone makes it somewhat worth it. The hard part is getting started with some creative new pursuit

It's funny how you mention storage. I started with an iPad 1st generation and iPhone 4s and always got the max...64, then 256 when it increased. But now in late 2023 I still feel 256gb is a sweet spot for the mobile devices, as even fully stocked with about a 100 apps ~10k photos and a bunch of music, I only take up about 70-80gb.
@mananparekh_
@mananparekh_ 8 ай бұрын
I agree, 256 is the sweet spot for sure. 64 is too small, 128 is cutting it close, and it's hard to touch 512 or 1TB. Hopefully 256 just becomes the standard in terms of storage going forward, I mean its 2023 already.

I still have my iPad Pro 2018 12,9" 256 Gb with Apple pen since then as well and it still servers me well. But I'm not pushing it so hard either. Will probably keep it a few years more. It's still fast enough for all I use it for.

Comment of the decade. But seriously thank you, still figuring out my style completely, but trying to learn from the greats The keyboard is helpful if you have the ability to pick between using your laptop and iPad, if you’re always going to use your laptop I agree the keyboard is not needed.

I also have a 2018 12.9’ iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard with 1 TB SSD and is my daily driver while traveling around the world. I still have over half my SSD space available so I would recommend the 512 SSD. Battery life isn’t what it used to be as can be expected after 5 years and I plan on getting the battery changed out at the Apple Store in Bangkok in a couple of weeks. My one complaint is the side camera when in landscape mode which I think will be addressed when the newer iPad Pros are released probably in the spring since the iPad Air & regular iPads have been moved.😊 My Magic Keyboard is cosmetically wearing, peeling at the corners, but still works flawlessly. After I replace this iPad and get a new battery for this one, I will most likely donate to a family member who can’t afford any iPads and will probably last several more years.
@mananparekh_
@mananparekh_ 8 ай бұрын
yeah donating down the family is definitely a good way to repurpose it. its inspiring to hear how you've made it your primary workhorse. There are a few things that still just feel more natural to me on a MacBook.

I bought all the same accessories as you, and I had the same feeling…it is a yes but not. Sometimes it is difficult to attach a file to an email, or open a pdf, or…basic stuff. Nowadays it is impossible to justify buying an iPad in terms of productivity when you can buy an M2 Macbook air new for less than 900$ in some places unless you are a graphic designer or artist.
@mananparekh_
@mananparekh_ 10 ай бұрын
That’s an excellent point, for strictly productivity based tasks a laptop is more efficient. However with creative pursuits having an iPad can really unlock an extra gear that’s not available with a laptop

Another big miss with this iPad (I have the exact same iPad Pro) is we dont get "More Space" for the display mode. I have the 64 gb iPad and still have almost 20 gb of space (I store everything on iCloud and dont have any huge content creation apps).

@samir2zk135 9 ай бұрын
@@mananparekh_ So far Amazing thinkpads are really good work machines, and the X1 gen 4 I got has wacom AES, changed the stylus to a better one, the performance is pretty good so far, the tablet ,build quality and functionality isn't as good as my old x201t. But the performance, touchscreen, display quality and other features really make up for it. Mind u I bought it for 250£ used ,2 months ago. So value wise for me it's way better than any apple products and many laptops. I mainly used it in classes for Maths and Physics and Computer science and it's pretty good. But it's a normal laptop it doesn't have an ultra efficient processor (lasts me 8 hours with light work which is decent) and ease of use for people who aren't too much into tech is not there. So, it might not be for you. Almost forgot to mention you can replace the storage to as much the connector can give and repairable.

My ipad Air 5 and pencil 2 got stolen and i used it for less than a year :( . When i did have it, i liked drawing on it , writing on it was okay but the screen got warm which felt annoying but bearable. I had a bluetooth keyboard and i honestly liked typing quick thoughts and stuff but i don't think i would ever do a full assignment , even mouse support was janky . But again drawing was just the chef's kiss for me ..... That being said I don't think I'd get another one . I was thinking of maybe trying those tablets for your laptops because I see they are more light weight now . Also my ipad air 5 battery finished pretty quick , i did have to use the screen pretty bright because the dim setting just wasn't doing it for me. But yeah 64 GBs oof
@mananparekh_
@mananparekh_ 8 ай бұрын
I agree doing full fledged assignments still feels janky on iPad unfortunately. something about it doesn't feel smooth, and it kinda dissuades me from using it for that kinda thing. drawing is def the best part, but as I get farther along in my career I find less situations where drawing is helpful to have.

For day to day use, if you want something affordable get an iPad 10th generation with 256GB of storage. I have an iPad Air with 64gb of storage and when I got in 2020 it was fine, now a days it's limiting because your either have to delete a few apps, or if you take a lot of photos or screenshots you have to delete some of that it can effect your storage. What is your budget?

Great timing for the vid, im currently a 1st year med student, I have a desktop PC that I almost exclusively use while at home but need something for my small group sessions and the odd lecture that I attend plus my programme tends to be clinical rotation heavy during the 2nd year. So I'm torn between getting the Ipad Pro (mainly for small note additions and anki cards) or just getting a cheaper laptop, do u have any recommendations?
@mananparekh_
@mananparekh_ 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for your question and congrats on matriculating - I think for small group it’s helpful to have a versatile device that enables writing + typing if needed. Most schools have some partnership with Microsoft so cloud storage is feasible between iPad and PC. I don’t think it makes sense to get a Mac given your pc set up at home, rather may be more helpful to add some versatility with an iPad. Will say that Anki on iPad leaves much to be desired, but if it’s strictly doing cards then it’s fun to use. Clinical rotations are challenging because iPad Pro doesn’t necessarily fit in the pocket, whereas the new iPad mini does. I feel clinical rotations require you to be adept at using your phone to find information, complete cards, and do practice questions. To sum - I’d say more ROI on a mid size iPad (10-11 inches) - whether it’s pro or not I’ll leave up to you. Definitely get the Apple Pencil, I prefer the magnetic version. Keyboard may also be helpful for small group. All in all not a cheap set up, but I think you’d appreciate the ability to write and draw. Just my thoughts - hope this helps!
