My parents have a blind cat. She wandered into their yard filthy and covered in burns, with her eyes swollen and unable to close all of the way. They think she had gotten caught in a brush fire. It was the weekend and all the nearby vets were closed (they live out in the rural Tx). They cleaned her up the best they could and tried to keep her comfortable but didn't think she would survive the weekend. She did. Her name is "Miracle", Mira or Miri for short and she is now a my dad's pampered princess.

We used to have a blind cat, but she still had her eyes and looked like she was staring, which sometimes freaked out our other four. She was the queen of the house and spent most of her time on the living room sofa. Her favourite thing was having a wadded-up bit of tinfoil tossed to her to bat around. She had the fastest reflexes I've ever seen.

Im a pet sitter here in la and regularly take care of a beautiful blind cat. I keep forgetting about her being blind bc it's not that different. Sometimes toys wise I'm learning that she prefers ones with predictable paths, like a track toy machine or automated feathery machine. If we do something that doesn't have a predictable path i have to be ultra sneaky and quiet bc her hearing is so good! And sometimes i feel bad bc im clumsy and dropping something makes her jump (i jump too). Reading behavior is a little more difficult bc i can't tell sometimes if she's play pouncing or annoyed but context clues help!! Love to everyone who gives love to shelter kitties

I had one she came to our front door, I thought it was just a eye infection but she was born blind, my vet told us that in her condition she wouldn’t probably make it, and if we took her to animals regulation she would be put to sleep. Well she was with us for 15 years, I didn’t have to do anything special in my house, she did have a safe room where she had all her things and where she would sleep at night. I had a chihuahua that she became used to him, when we had visitors she would go in her room, but she was all over the house without no problem, I love to move furniture around a lot but she did very well with that, even in the backyard, we were always with her in case of a hawk. She was an amazing Kitty. Her name was Hessie since at the beginning that is all she did. We miss her tremendously.

I live with two blind cats and they really are completely normal. I agree with having banisters and outside areas secured (also for sighted cats!). The bit about moving furniture really depends on your cat. Cats as a species do not like change very much. That said, my youngsters LOVE new and moved things and immediately want to explore and climb all over them. As long as you don't rearrange your entire house on a weekly basis, many blind cats will be fine with normal household amounts of moving or changing furniture. They are also perfectly capable of finding and biting their sighted brother (yes, it's usually this way around) without any bells!
@bookbunny92 жыл бұрын
That's my experience, too! I think the difference comes down to cats who were born blind vs. cats who went blind - my parents' older cat, who went blind, is much slower and careful than my born-blind zesty boy, who regular hunts flies and tackles his brother
@MoettheBlindCat2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I got criticism for the bannisters and garden from another blind cat owner. But we also feel it's important to be 100% sure and safe! Agree that perhaps we overemphasized the not moving things around.. we do of course, but not often. Many or most blind cats will cope with that fine. But Chandie is tentative and likes things to be the same, or it stresses her a bit. :) xx
@MoettheBlindCat2 жыл бұрын

Do you feel that a house can't have much clutter, or, say, plants etc around? I just saw a message in a FB group I'm in about a blind cat needing a (foster) home, and I would love to open up my home to him, but my house is quite cluttered, and that's just the kind of person I am, so not very likely to change. I do have a guest bedroom I could keep the cat in and then slowly introduce him to the rest of the house as he acclimatizes.
@anleet2 жыл бұрын
@@meikusje I think that'll depend on the cat. I have a neat house but with a lot of things and decorations and it doesn't bother my cats at all. A cat who isn't skittish of their environment will probably do fine

The other 5 month old kitten was brought to me when she was about 3-4 weeks old - a feral cat too. She has never been outside. My new kitten grew up outside, but I will not let him out my house. I was a teacher of children with visual impairments for 40 years. Our advice to parents and caregivers was so similar to what she said about her blind kitties. The importance of setting up the environment for safety, and then keeping it the same. One difference here though is we always used "child first" language. So, they were children with visual impairments, not blind kids. The emphasis meant that they were children who were more alike others than different from. I'm sure Moet and Shandy don't care what they're called. 😉Those are two beautiful, fortunate, well loved cats.

Most blind people prefer identity first rather than person first, which is often enforced by nondisabled people without actually asking disabled people about their option. Pretty paternalistic and depending on the disability it can be a huge red flag, after all, needing to continuously remind yourself that disabled people are indeed people, all while going against their actual expressed wishes, isn't really a great look. A recent study found that it may even increase stigma as disability is linguistically treated as a terrible thing that one must use euphemisms to describe. It would be better to actually listen to disabled people instead of trying to enforce linguistic standards that are opposed by them just to make yourself feel better, wouldn't it? EDIT: This is not to say that person first language has absolutely no place, there are a few communities (mainly people with down syndrome if I recall) that do prefer it, but it has been forced on many, many more groups than would have ever chosen it and in some cases even weaponized against them.

I'm legally blind, and I love cats, so this is wonderful. That said, I've never had a blind cat before, and I'm unsure how we'd do. I've had some cats who react great to me, my occasional trouble navigating or seeing them, and other cats who had trouble understanding that about me and how to adjust their own behavior to work around it. I'm so glad cats I've dealt with haven't had serious eye issues (from illness or bad conditions), so we've been fortunate about that. -- My personal situation is not good; I'm hoping to get SSDI and other assistance before things get really untenable, but it's likely I could be offline indefinitely during late December and after. Hopingg things will improve before then. But in case, letting people know.
