I loooooove that you have a "simple" life because it makes you so much more relatable. It's really refreshing to see you do tutorials working with what you already have.

I also always used to collect sooo many things. But since a couple of years I'm working on decluttering my life and it feels amazing! (and yes, I'm even decluttering my bookshelf, but it feels amazing to just have the books on my shelf that make me feel happy and that I love!)

I really liked how you specified what counts for you as valuable possessions - and the fact that they "bring you joy". It seems sometimes with minimalism that it's all about cutting down everything, but it's refreshing to hear a different opinion! Thank you!!

Yay for books! I have to draw the line there when it comes to de-cluttering my life. Being surrounded by the books I love helps me understand who I am. Getting rid of every book I am not reading at the moment is out of the question!

I would say you are minimalist because minimalism is about living intentionally and to have things that you love. I have a lot of home decor stuff and a tooootally different style than the all-white modern look, but I don't have things that I do not love or use, so I define myself as a minimalist. It's just about keeping the things that are valuable to you, and to be conscious about your choices😊 Loved this video!🌹

I realised when I moved country to study abroad that you don't need much to be happy - a few clothes, a few things to remind me of my family every day, and that's it. I tend to accumulate unnecessary stuff, but I have an emotional attachment to every single one of them, they always send me back to some places or some people, and I can't get rid of them. After 2 years I've accumulated quite a lot, but that's how I feel at home! I could never do minimalism even though I prefer small places :)

great video, i used to be same as a child and even as an early grown up i was also joining the race you were talking about, but i fell really ill 2 years ago (both physically and mentally) and i got rid of a lot of stuff in my house because it irritated me and i couldn't maintain it, ever since i've been feeling so much more content, it really changes how you look at it when you get sick and you cant find happiness it material anymore, you realize that what's important is not the stuff you have or the success you have (like career), but rather what gives happiness is love, friendship, warmth etc. - when everything falls apart and when everything is gone, what's left is your feeling inside and other people's feelings, so i'm more focused on that and it helps tons

I grew up in a house where my mom purged every season. So our rooms were pleasant but never crowded. I married a great guy whose family never got rid of anything. So, he would have every bit of floor space covered in furniture, and all the walls plastered in pictures... But having a somewhat artistically trained eye, I just cannot stand that. It's a struggle, though, b/c the process of decluttering stresses him out... whereas having so much stuff stresses ME out! lol It's been 16 years of learning to appreciate each other and forebear with each other. This fall we did a major purge of kid clothing and it felt so GOOD! We may be moving soon, too, so that a great reason to get rid of stuff!!!

It’s also wasteful to get rid of everything, especially if you know you’re going to end up having to replace it all at some point. So getting rid of it without needing to isn’t the best. Just make it unobtrusive (totally not an art supply hoarder either 😂) I love small spaces, I feel so much more calm as well as inspired.

I have the same feeling regarding my art supplies. I got rid of a lot of it (crappy brushes, most of my paints that were just doubles of other paints, etc) but I've created too much to assume I won't take part in that again.

Hahaha, books. I'm fairly good at minimalism but then I have a ton of books. I lived in a 20qm room and I could have done with half of it if it hadn't been for one large and two small bookcases. I generally relate to sooo many things you're talking about here. I love to keep things functional and minimalist but I still keep a lot of things with sentimental value as well. I choose them carefully though. They make be happy so they are functional! Another thing I do because I love little beautiful and interesting things and frankly kitsch, is that I keep a treasure chest. I came up with that when I found a very old cardboard suitcase on the street. What I keep in there are for example soap bubbles, juggling balls, my rainbow Flags, some beautiful little glass and crystal decorations I don't have on display at the moment, playing cards with beautiful designs, shells and pebbles from trips, a pink and blue clear plastic ball with glitter in it that I use for some exercises... there was a point when I was thinking about getting rid of all these things but it just felt wrong because these little things are magical to me, make me happy, and feed my imagination. They make my mind want to play.

Love this - sounds like we're in a pretty similar place.... I don't know if it's because we're at certain places in our lives and certain paths have led us to where we are and the decisions we make, or if we're just growing up and our priorities are clearer as a result of maturity and age? either way - I like that I've left the rat race and my life is so much less stressful now i'm not trying to keep up with everyone else and comparing myself to other people.

Minimalism - I remember the hippie generation and to an extent the beat generation tried it in various forms. Then the pendulum swings the other way and you get your yuppies in the 80's. . Minimalism reared up again in the U.S. after the economic collapse of 2008. Makes total sense since less money = a simpler lifestyle. I know what works for me. I just sit back and watch the trends come and go.

I am such a hoarder physically and digitally. For instance, my apartment I'm in now has a Huge closet and my plan has always been to gradually buy things that I would need to make my wardrobe more versatile. However, because of money I don't buy many things at once, usually just one or two items. This causes things to go out of season and now I find myself hoarding items from 10+ years ago. I wish I could bring myself to get rid of stuff but I have such a hard time with sentimental value when it comes to clothing. I don't know why because I could just take pictures of things.

I have the same exact feeling about books! Its why I stopped watching minimalism vids, it seems they care more about the aesthetic sometimes. Or that they have no hobbies lol. I am an artist and crafter and avid reader so... there are certain things I just dont get rid of. But I think most people I know consider me a minimalist because I don't WANT MORE, and i'm satisfied with what I have. I don't consider myself a minimalist... I think i'm like you with the labels thing. (I did get rid of my bed and I sleep on the floor on some blankets but thats more about back issues than minimalism lol.)

I try to live sustainably as I can in a rural area with limited options and limited recycling. Half of my furniture is second hand, either hand-me-down or bought in second hand stores. I go the route of trying to be knowledgeable of my purchases, try to put less plastic in landfills. I'm not really interested in the minimalist movement, probably for the reason that you stated...Books! And the fact that some very vocal parts of it can be judgmental and extreme. I don't like extremes. There are probably things I keep in my home that some people would call clutter, but clutter is entirely relative to the each person. If it has importance to you, then I don't think it is anyone else's business whether or not you keep space for it in your own home. My ultimate goal, if I had too choose a label, is conscious consumer. I cannot eat vegan. I have tried several times, but I have intolerances to foods that prevent me from doing that 100% of the time. I do have several meat-less meals/days during the week.

Minimalism seems to hold different meanings for different people. I think the meaning of minimalism is in the name and it means living with the bare essentials. There is also a minimalist aesthetic in interior design which, for me, doesn't necessarily equate to living with the bare essentials since it can be a costly look. I don't think you are a minimalist - the books, and the art supplies ;-) Neither are you materialistic - you're very thoughtful. I could never be minimalist - I like my books, I have a *lot* of scarves and I have an entirely pointless magnet collection which I really enjoy. I also feel quite wasteful when moving things along out of my life so I keep things 'just in case'. I suppose the 'just in case' mentality is exactly the sort of trapping that some definitions of minimalism talk about being free from.

Every two years or so I look through my book and DVD collection and what I haven't read or watched in the past year or so I sell them to a second hand bookshop. I get more space and make a little money from it. It's a good way to clean up my small space. I live simply clothes wise too. I only own seven pairs of shirts, three pairs of jeans and seven pairs of sweatpants . I don't need more clothes than that. I live in a American 'L' shaped studio apartment with only my dog. I like my small space. It's just enough for my dog and I to live comfortably in. I've lived there for eight years and I don't plan on moving out anytime soon.
