People need to realise that not everyone with OCD has a fear of germs only. It can manifest itself in many ways. Everyone is different. The fact that his room is messy is irrelevant and rather an ignorant comment. Do your research before leaving comments like that.

Looks like there needs to be more awareness about ocd and all mental illness in general. No titan is right ocd can manifest itself in many different ways. You can be really messy and even neglect chores and still have severe ocd.

For the people saying that for a person with OCD his room is really messy, there are different types of OCD, you don't have to have anxiety about a messy room to have OCD.

Anyone here with OCD I am terribly sorry. I have been diagnosed with it for 5 years and have been on 4 different medications with 4 different therapists. People don't know what it's like to actually suffer in this world. They worry about stuff that goes on around them but nothing near what we suffer with

does anyone else have that annoying trait where they touch something and it just feels...wrong?? so you keep touching it again until it feels right? And when you can't touch it again it just makes you crazy? :( If I can't touch that certain thing again I start pulling at my hand and rubbing them to help the sort of "pain"

***** for me it didn't happen too often, but when it did, I wouldn't be able to stop until I've touched it hundreds of times (no exaggeration there) But when I can't touch it again I will go INSANE. Once when I was little I was in a store with my parents, and I picked up something off the shelf and had to put it back because we were leaving, I put it down totally wrong (?¿) and I couldn't fix it cuz my mom had grabbed me and we left. So the rest of the car ride home, I was pulling at the skin of my hands and rubbing them against each other, even bitting them. By the time we got home I had a huge burn and different bite marks all over my hands. This still happens now when I'm like 15 years old, but not with the biting part, and I stop before I can physically injure my hand, and just shake my hands out

Things I do are not to step on cracks (only when I notice, when I do I get pissed) and when thinks go slowly back and forth I get really anxious and I start tapping things fast or I hear screaming and hollering and I also can never have the volume anything other than the intervals of 5.

OCD is a serious condition, it can put large amounts of stress on people, leading to the possibility of random bursts of aggression, depression and what a majority of people would consider odd behavioural patterns, its not a healthy thing to have in your life.

Worrying about being too skinny in our society is not a problem most people feel. It's usually the other side that society would, in general, form obsessions about and then be compelled to do the compulsions (actions). I had it much worse as a child with OCD. I have developed my own coping mechanisms over the years. For example, being in public and surrounding myself around people prevents me from doing the compulsions and I end up following the social norms. Obtaining more education is my other coping mechanism as well as meeting new people. Just keep yourself so busy in life that you have no time to think about these day to day obsessions. OCD has a ton to do with superstitions. Originally, I just closed my eyes and told myself "everything is fine, nothing bad would happen by changing routine", then I proved it to myself by switching up routine, like testing a hypothesis to myself. If you are not able to cope like many of us can, just go for the drugs.

My life with OCD really pulls the trigger out of me! I mean for goodness sake,I've spent almost ours just to make sure I have touched everything inside the house including the ceiling.And not just that,I'm trying to make sure that my hands are clean. And if I hold my right hand,I also have to hold my left hand and vice versa.I also have to touch the switch inside the house 4 times because if I don't,something terrible is going to happen.One time when I was excessively worried about dread and my death, my anxiety attack me more than a day,my family was so worried and they thought I was experiencing mild stroke by that time.Until now my OCDs ruining my life,including my daily activities and my duties inside the house and inside the campus.And even now,I have to type this correctly because I find it hard to resist it,so much...

Do any of you understand that OCD is a serious mental illness about negative thoughts which makes you feel the need to do unnecessary compulsions that stop the negative things from happening that make no sense but to someone with OCD it does make sense it annoys the shit out of me when people say I have OCD when really they are just perfectionists when really you don't understand the everyday struggle that someone has to deal with I have had OCD for over three years and I will tell you it has been hell I have had all sorts of negative thoughts harm to a loved one that really was the start of it all I have had some really bad ones it's scary so please don't say that you have OCD when you don't

I have COD as well. Although I don't have the same symptoms it can still be quite bothersome. And disruptive as well. I've only known about my OCD since 2009 or 2010. So it's still fairly new to me. Some of my symptoms include compulsive hand washing and bathing, compulsively cleaning my home. Every thing has to be just right or I go nutsoid. Especially in my kitchen. Do not let me catch you putting things in the wrong place or the wrong order. I may well go postal if I do catch you. I do have times where it is not nearly as bad. But it is always there. And it gets worse when I'm under stress and feeling really scared. I'm really glad I watched your video. It was really good and I really identified with it. What l really liked the end because it showed that you have hope, and hope is so important. I hope to see more of your videos because they are really good. Thank you. Jude

Eric Medina, you have a real gift! You probably know that. People have a hard time understanding OCD and its different forms and you did a great job giving people a feel for your own experience with it. As I read through the many comments in response to your film, I see that there are many young people questioning if they "have OCD" or not. I am a social worker and professor and I just want to say that people should reach out for help if they need it or think they need it. I am acquainted with OCD and know that people can be helped. There are many myths about OCD and what it is and there are many variants and degrees of severity. OCD can make people feel that they are strange in some way, but they are not--many people (and kids) have this problem. It waxes and wanes and sometimes can even go away over time. In fact, people with OCD are often highly intelligent and creative, from what I have learned about it, so OCD might be a price of sorts for having other gifts and talents! No one goes through life without encountering challenges and OCD is just one of the many kinds of challenges people can face. My advice is to seek help and not let yourself hide! BTW, Eric, I have shown your film to my graduate social work students who feel that they learned a lot about OCD from it. Thank you for your courage in sharing your experience with others--it helps to diminish stigma and increases public awareness.

I had OCD when I was younger. One day I was looking in the mirror after shaving and noticed wrinkles by my left eye that didn't match the ones on my right eye. This distressed me very much, until I said "Screw it!" Nothing I could do about it would help, and after that day the compulsions started to crumble one by one. There are still a few minor ones (can totally relate to the cabinets) but for the most part, I'm healed :) Good luck to you!

From handwashing to counting, to double checking that doors were locked, appliances turned off. I got to a point where I thought, if I dont get help now I am going to end up either involuntarily checked into the psych ward or suicide. After working my way thru it I can now say that I finally have my life back..you can do it too man. Stay positive, it'll all work out :)

I could tell you every single angle. the depression, the anxiety, the uneasiness, the adject fear over some compulsions and the rituals that follow. Intrusive thoughts and constant, and I mean CONSTANT ruminations about death and pain.

I have to ask - are you seeing a psychiatrist? Have you actually been diagnosed with OCD? I could only get through 7 and a half minutes of this before getting frustrated, but everything I saw in this video at most could be described as OCPD (Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder), which despite the similar name and a few overlapping traits is a very different diagnosis. OCD is neurological, and is linked to biological and chemical processes in the brain OCPD is a personality disorder, not a neurological disorder If you had OCD, the cabinet being open would give you anxiety because you might have an irrational fear that leaving it open could result in the death of someone you knew later on. And there's a good chance you would know the fear was completely irrational and not realistic, but the anxiety it caused was so great you had to satisfy it anyway by closing the door. If you have OCPD, the cabinet being open could give you anxiety as well, but it would not be tied to a specific fear. It would just give you anxiety because it is not uniform with the rest of the cabinets, or because "the rule is the cabinets must be closed". You'd have the anxiety because your personality developed an uncommon adherence to a specific set of rules, perfectionism or order. But its not linked to any sort of specific and irrational fear. And you might not even think its weird that you want it that way. Plain and simple, OCD should not be "CDO" as so many people like to joke, because it has NOTHING to do with things being in alphabetical order.
@hla6618
@hla6618 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you for clarifying that. I've been living with OCD, and have had the irrational fears of being a pedophile, a murderer, etc., and my compulsions are purely based on trying to suppress the thoughts/anxiety. People saying "I'm so OCD because I can't stand out of order things" don't know what it's like to have OCD, nor would they ever want to.
@hla6618
@hla6618 9 жыл бұрын
Shpee I haven't been diagnosed because I'm too embarrassed to bring up the suicidal thoughts, panic attacks, and obsessive thoughts to my psychologist. Sometimes the symptoms flared up so bad that I would sit in a corner and wish I were dead. And I did leave quite a good amount of details out of what I previously said. I used to have OCD, before I had gotten back on Zoloft (which I had been taking for anxiety). Anyways, the intrusive thoughts were followed by doubt, and more intrusive thoughts, which turned into a terrible cycle, eventually leading to me having suicidal tendencies/ thoughts. I did have compulsions, though a large sum of them were mental. I would check to make sure I wasn't a pedo, or a murderer by making sure I didn't like the thoughts... but then I'd get another intrusive thought and feel worse than before, allowing myself to believe I was a monster. Though I haven't been diagnosed, I thoroughly believe I have OCD.

Magical Mystery Pink well maybe i can convince you to tell a physciatrist . ive dealt with ocd since i was about 8 i remember times where i would basically be pulling my hair out or hitting myself in the head to try and make the thoughts stop my symptoms went unnoticed til i was like 16 will i noticed i couldnt get to sleep at night or concentrate at school ( i dropped out cause of this) i went to a psychologist and got diagnosed with adhd, ocd often presents itself as adhd in kids, i was put on adderal xr and that made things worse. i would focus even more on my thoughts so i stopped taking it. when i was 18 i had an indecent with someone and it bothered me to the point where i was staying up all day and night trying to convince myself i wasnt what i thought i was( im not going into detail about that it would take waaay to long lol) so after about 2 weeks or nonstop intrusive thoughts i said "i gotta see a shrink" so i went to another psychologist and was diagnosed with manic depression, severe paranoia, and a couple other things i cant remember that arnt really important.after about a month of going to this doctor he started saying shit that made everything worse like "o well everything should get better if you move out of your parents house" and that made me worry more so i went to my current psychologist and she diagnosed me with severe ocd, i was put on zoloft and seroquol and i could finally get to sleep at night and my intr. thoughts and compulsions are still bad but not as bad (its getting better). if would have never went to see her i probably would have killed myself or hurt someone else but now im happier than ive ever been and all the weird things i did as a kid a starting to make sense. so defiantly make sure to talk to a shrink about it and message me if you need any advice or someone to talk to cause trust me ive had every kind of intrusive thought you can have. Stay classy

Yeah, Yoshee, I totally agree with what you said. I didn't mean that people have a little bit of OCD but that they attribute some stress-related symptoms to OCD, it's like, a way people put it, even if they don't have OCD, which I don't find too much of a problem as long as they know they aren't actually suffering from it, but only from stress, since that could lead to misunderstandings.

Walking to the bus is hardest for me, because of the sidewalk, certain colors and crossing the streets and stuff. What shoe I put on first, how I tie it. Color order, and alphabetized order. I noticed i had it at around 15 years old. I was outside 1 day and this girl touched me and i went and showered. I didn't want anyone to touch me. I am 22 years old now and the compulsive thoughts are trying to consume me. I can honestly say that my faith in Jesus Christ has helped me gain control. it's still bad but not like it was. I havent told anyone. Im scared they will call me crazy and treat me different. Sometimes i dont know how im still alive. God is truly keeping me alive.

I've been grappling with OCD for coming up on 25 years now, and it does get better with time and treatment. :-) Also, I applaud you for having the strength and bravery to make this video for a school project. Coming forward and publicly stating that you have OCD (or any major neuropsychological issue) is a tough thing for most people. There are few of us that can do it. Thusly... [applause] :)

Well first make sure that he is loved and that you love him for who he is, complement him when you see him in the morning and after his work or things like that, ocd is mainly people being unsatisfied with themselves in the day so if you give him this self confidence then he can attach away from it.

No way to get rid of it for good, and you will still have those thoughts but it won't affect you as much as it would have in the past. Medication you don't really need, but it helps. What you need is strategies of how to fight it. One example of this is exposure and response

I'm glad someone made a documentary about ocd. I have it and I'm ready to give up. If there's a treatment, my insurance won't cover it. No drug or therapy works and I stay exhausted. People have no patience with me and get angry at me, as if I could control it. This is a curse. The only thing I look forward to is eternal unconsciousness.

Cee. If you are willing then please try this: next time you'll have an obsession do not try to suppress the thought or analyse it trying to convince yourself that it just doesn't make any sense and so you shouldn't feel that way. In fact do not do anything about it - not the compulsion, no suppression, no denial. Just accept the fact that the thought is in your head. I know it may sound impossible because of the extreme discomfort it may cause and the anxiety may really start to build up - sweating, breathing, trembling and so on, but once it will reach it's peak, it will gradually subside. Maybe for the first time in a while. I would also really recommend to you to meditate - one of the effects it has is lowering the anxiety levels. I would also recommend you to watch this: v=uixONPLVKEg. I don't think that you can 'control' it, erase it, or stop your brain from producing it, but you can decide if you want to pay attention to it when it happens and go along with it, or not. You have the power to decide. You are not your thoughts, Cee. You can learn to decide which thoughts you want to follow and which you don't. Good luck.

So I have a hearing disorder that a therapist had diagnosed as OCD because of other things I do. I can't go to bed without wearing socks, I have to put lotion on my face and hands after I take a shower, I have random thoughts on acting out and I get close to doing them, I bet myself in my head, most importantly I can't stand hearing people eat or talk too loud or scratching etc. I'm sick of people diagnosing themselves with it or trying to act like you have it. My sister does that and she's older than me. She heard I might have OCD and she turns it into something about her. Everyone thinks it's about being neat and clean but it's not.

So many people just pretend to have OCD now to seem "out of the ordinary" that no one really takes it seriously anymore. Like depression or ADHD. Things as little as the sound a fluorescent light make are enough to distract me, but no one takes me seriously anymore.

@TheFazzy91 The urges that people with OCD have are different than the urges people without it have. The urges are not normal (such as having to count every bird in a flock that flies by, or having to hold your breath for 30 seconds) and they usually come with an irrational threat (ex. if I don't do this, my brother will die). This is more in severe cases, but I can tell you it is absolutely more than "mental weakness". I had it myself and thank God I have overcome it, but it took years.

I had OCD and it was fucking killing me, I was barely in control of my own life. This demon in my head made me believe everything he said, and I could do nothing but obey. But one day, when this disorder had fucked up one too many things in my life, I decided to show who was in charge. I changed almost overnight, by my own will. To all fellow OCD-suffering people out there: it CAN and WILL be defeated

Yeah, it is similar with me. I almost always have to have all the doors in the house firmly closed and any doors accessing the outside locked (and checked at least 3 times). I also like to have all the lights off except for one (no more than that) if a person in the room (also partially due to my urge of not wanting to waste electrical energy).

OCD is as difficult for the people around the person suffering as it is for the actual individual suffering as well. I can't tell you how many times I want to just strangle my brother or grab him and fucking scream into his face that his behaviour is so ridiculous, but I have to remember that he can't help himself. It is so alarming though to see how fast it progresses in only 1 years time - a completely normal kid to a germ obsessed freak who can't leave the house. His life is forever changed

Usually, people with OCD are very curious about their surroundings. It's kind of like they have an extra pair of eyes that no one else has. They notice small pieces of lint than is unnoticeable to others. He might see something on the shirt that isn't according to his sense of balance. Whatever that is, he will take of it. Things have to feel and be perfect.

+Speedy Gonzalez I have severe OCD. I take 4 different pills for OCD and what OCD has caused me. OCD is not about being organized and cleaning your room. Yes, society has made it look like a cute little quirk one should have if say, they always like their room clean, or if you don't like odd numbers. OCD is thinking if you do not touch an object 14 times on each hand, something bad will happen. It is a non-stopping thought that you will kill your best friend, even though you love them and would never purposely hurt them. It is thinking if you do not know how many hours you slept, you will die or get insomnia. OCD is not about your room being clean. So before you say something you think you have because you simply are a perfectionist who likes a clean room, please educate yourself.

I have such weird rituals, like, if i turn the sink off, i have to touch it in a specific way and a specific number of times before i feel satisfied! Same thing with my TV-remote, door and even my body if i am itching somewhere! The worst thing is when i’m at the gym, if i’m lifting weights my mind is saying: «just 2 more reps, just 5 more, just 5 more» until my body is physically unable to, same with running, 2 more minutes, 2 more, 2 more!!! It never ends! The voice in my head even tells me how i should eat my food, how i should hold the fork and the knife, how many bites i can take! It gets dangerous sometimes too, when i’m riding my bike my voice is telling me to slam the brakes or collide with the truck that i see! I have to get out of bed at exactly 8:26 in the morning and i have to get up at the left side of the bed!!! All of this is really exhausting and it’s killing me slowly!!!

It drives all of us nuts. But unfortunately, there is no cure. You just have to tell yourself "okay, no matter what, I will not close my door 5 times tonight." Take baby steps. The less you listen to the OCD, the less its going to bother you. Think of it as a bully. If you give the bully lunch money, they will keep coming back, but if you stand up for yourself, he/she goes away. You can try what I do, Tell yourself if you do the compulsion, then the said bad thing will happen. I hope this helps.
