The O in OCD means obsessive.... you can become obsessive over anything with OCD. It is NOT about cleaning and organizing. I dont have OCD nearly to the extent of this beautiful child but I do have one thing where I constantly think my doors are not locked/shut. I will close and reclose my front door 5 times before I believe it's closed and locked. Theres no rhyme or reason to it but my brain just doesn't shut off until I repeat this process. I hate it. Edit : thanks for sharing your stories! And I didn't say that you can't have OCD about cleaning. I mean that the typical personal believes OCD is only for cleaning and thats not true. Becoming obsessed with cleaning is definitely something that happens. In other words, not everyone who cleans a lot is OCD, and not everyone with OCD is obsessed with cleaning.

Maybe you can kindly inform them that OCD is an actual condition next time you hear them say it then. It's gotten to the point where "I'm so OCD" has become a saying that literally just means "I have the compulsion to be tidy." Most people who use that phrase aren't self-diagnosing themselves and they probably aren't thinking they have OCD. It's a phrase that has morphed from a real condition to an idiom of sorts.

OCD is not a mood. It's not just wanting everything straight or your Skittles sorted by color. It can look like those things, but the difference is there's an intense anxiety behind it that can make just living so much harder for the sufferer than the average person. Fun fact: people with OCD need more sleep than the average person. It's like running a marathon all day long but in your mind. This girl is tough to be able to go through it like that and come out stronger on the other side.

Basically its something that gets in the way of your life like many other illnesses ... like depression, someone can be sad but if you then stop seeing people, stop taking care of yourself, stop doing the things you like, if your sadness is getting in the way of your regular daily life for long period of time its most likely depression you know. Ocd isnt just perfectionism etc. Its something that takes time out of your day for a multiyude of days that gets in the way of your daily life eg. I have to be at school by 9am but if i dont take the right amount of steps within a square of pavement i have to go back to the start of my walk, this may make someone late but itd very distressing to not start again

OCD doesn’t even imply a detail-oriented person. it’s characterized by anxiety-driven repetitive behaviors. washing your hands again and again, checking the oven just in case every five minutes, hell, even just mentally remembering every conversational error you made in a day and repeating them over and over in your head because it makes the anxiety easier. sometimes, your OCD is entirely mental. no one sees it. all your compulsions are mental behaviors which consume your consciousness.

As she said, it can take you a long time to actually do something because every time you do it you have to do it again because it doesn't feel 'right' and if it's not right then your brain is saying stuff like 'If you don't do it right your family members going to die' or this is gonna happen or that's gonna happen. It's truly exhausting. This is why it's so annoying when all these people are like "Oh I'm so OCD" like the mother said or whatever. They truly don't understand just how exhausting and annoying it is. Thank you for this video Vice, thank you for giving us a voice. Thank you for sharing our frustrations. I hope Allison finds things that make it easier for her in the future, because sometimes the compulsions do get better. She's got a wonderful mum supporting her. ❤

Ironically OCD can lead to being dirty. There was a famous American industrialist who had OCD whose rituals took so much time they became overwhelming. This also happened to me. I couldn't agree more. I was diagnosed at an early age. I remember one time restacking pillows at least 14 times one morning. I remember because I had literally just woken up and I felt like It wouldn't even let me move past getting up, I finally got the stack to be perfect but it just ended in tears and hyperventilation (from how much I was moving and the effort I was putting into this tiny task). I had spent more than two hours doing that and there was nobody there to stop me and I couldn't stop myself.

It's fantastic to see Allison already so advanced in her recovery journey. My OCD only really became abundant in my twenties, although I now understand teenage events a lot better now. Hey💙, my OCD as a teenager was like yours. Compulsions all day, everyday, rewriting, rereading, counting, and all sorts of rituals all day. My OCD took 8-12 hours of my day at its peak. At 17 I did CBT on myself, for many months, I got a dog, which was a great stress reliver, I started mediation daily while doing the CBT during the time as well. For months I failed, the first, second and third time, but eventually I began to get better. I was 90% OCD free by mid 18, I'm now 26 and OCD lingers maybe once every three months and I just take a deep breath, resist the urge and it goes away eventually again. Severe OCD as I once had it is now in the past. There's hope, keep strong, so one day you can look back at your OCD past how I am now. Xo

I have Bipolar II and OCD, and for me personally, OCD has been what has driven me to be suicidal for most of my adolescent and adult life. It’s debilitating. It’s excruciating. And I wish more people understood how minimizing it is and how much harder it makes it for people with OCD to talk about an already silent illness when everybody walks around making jokes and saying “I’m so ocd” like it makes you quirky. I owe my life to the professionals who have helped me get to a manageable place, having both OCD and Bipolar. I will end on a happy note and say that the affirming and earnestly sympathetic comments are truly heartening, and I am so immensely proud of this strong, smart, brave young lady and her considerate mother. I’ve found that sometimes separating myself from my brain helps? Like referring to my “ocd brain” helps me differentiate between logical thoughts and intrusive ones, so it starts to become easier to ignore really stupid (because they are stupid) thoughts. Idk if that helps, but remember that ocd is so clever and the more you try to fight/analyse the thoughts, the bigger that thought gets x

I don't know if you'll ever read this, Allison, and even though we only got a small glimpse of your world, you come off as a very intelligent young girl. Being 14 - and having this level of self awareness and consciousness about what you can do, to improve the condition you have, is nothing but amazing. It's plain to see that you are really doing an effort and educating yourself about your condition. Doing exposure and training your brain to understand that "this is OK", at your age? Trust me, that says a whole lot about your character. What we, who do not live with an OCD, take for granted - you have to work hard for. Those small things about fixing your hair perfectly. Yeah, we might have a bad hair day and feel slightly uncomfortable, but it will never compare to the way you(and many others like you) are feeling. Thank you for sharing your story with us, we need people like you. People who have "issues" that are invisible. We need you to speak up. Someone who are not as strong as you, are probably cheering because you had the guts and will to share your story. Because YOU did, you may have made their path just a little bit easier. Thinking that you are only 14, that's amazing. Your wit, level of insight and intelligence - seem to surpass your peers. I'm not a believer in gods, but bless you - and keep fighting.

i went to school with a girl who had ocd in middle school, i remember her so vividly bc ppl would bully her and call her names. once in the bathroom she was scrubbing her hands really hard, i asked if she was okay and she started crying. her hands were blood red and there was literally blood coming from her hands. she killed herself in 7th grade, people said she had an od on aspirin but other people said she hung herself. i don’t know which one was true, but it made me so mad. bc the same people that bullied her were like “she deserved better” and “society sucks”. she was such a nice person though, i didn’t even know why she got bullied. she always smiled and really did just try to make friends. she genuinely was one of those people that you can’t forget.

When she showed in the beginning the hair thing, it brought me back. I’ve done that sooo many times. Once I was going to a wedding and didn’t like the hairdo so I re did it so many times I missed the church service and part of the wedding and when I got there I had a panic attack where I lost consciousness and was rushed home where I woke up with Oxygen because I couldn’t breathe. Another time I suffered a bad fall broke my arm and couldn’t use it for two weeks, I had my husband do my hair and when he didn’t do it well it brought me to tears I couldn’t handle it. Of course that’s not everyday but the fact that it got to those extremes and the many other things like erasing things and writing again until they’re perfect, moving things constantly because I feel everything is crooked, having to re check things a million times, it really makes my life miserable at times.

Even filling out applications, I’d grab multiple in case I needed to start over. Hm. Interesting. I don’t think I have OCD but I know how frustrating and anxious that can make you. What an incredibly strong girl. OCD is so serious, it's actually a brain disorder involving lapses in communication between multiple crucial parts of the brain. That's why she developed it at age 3, she was born with it. That's not always the case but it is partly genetic. My dad has severe OCD, similar to this girl (in time spent on obsessions/compulsions). My sister and I both have mild OCD but mine flares up badly to the severity of my dad's when I'm under a lot of stress. It absolutely sucks and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Good for her for being an advocate, that's exactly what is needed. The more people know about it, the less stigma there will be.

OCD is one of those all encompassing conditions that, without treatment, will slowly take over your entire life. I knew of an extremely severe case once where a young man had to quite lite live in the bathroom in his mother’s house. His anxiety, compulsive behaviors, and intrusive thoughts were so severe he couldn’t function outside of this tiny little room. The good news is, OCD is one of the few psychological conditions that actually has decently high success rates with treatment.

I am very thankful you shared your story. I canNOT imagine the amount of complete exhaustion this mental health illness causes you, Allison. As the significant other of a man who has been diagnosed with PTSD and has permanent Psychosis from illegal drug use, I have an understanding of the importance of family support- I applaud your mother and admire her strength. I do have a couple of thoughts. As I listened to your mom and she was saying that people say that they have OCD over something minor. You know, honestly I would "toss" that term around when I did something that I was trying to explain away to other people who thought I was putting more effort into a task that I didn't need to. Or if I spent more time fixing something, rearranging something and people would tell me it wasn't worth it. I'm not saying it is the right term to use, but folks say things when they feel inadequate or "silly" for doing things and others and they are afraid others will judge them for it. We all have strengths, we all have weaknesses. If you continue to educate others about OCD traits, it could change the way people reference it. Now that I understand more about PTSD and Psychotic tendencies, I never say things like, "Don't be so sad, you should be happy" or "Just think happy thoughts", or during a psychotic break I understand why I must keep a certain tone in my voice in order to help calm my boyfriend down or to just be in the room so that he knows he's not alone. I am saying all this to make the point that a person never knows what will happen in life at any given point. The biggest thing we can do to help one another is go through hardships with them. Learn as much as you can about the situation and put yourself through every emotion, every heartbreak, every nightmare with them. Also, realize that the cross you bear may be lighter than another's or heavier than another. But we all will go through trials in this lifetime. Be kind; don't be offended if someone uses a phrase in a hurtful way, more than likely they are uneducated about the proper usage. And if you hear them, and you can- tell them about it and why it's not the correct term to use. Not only does this show your person that they are supported but it makes the "good" days so much more beautiful for BOTH of you. The other thing that I was curious about was during the part of the video when you, Allison's mother, was saying that she would ask you so many times if you loved her, was this the fear in her mind from thinking she wasn't "normal" and she needed reassurance or do you think it was the Obsessive trait of OCD? Also, do you think it would have helped and could it help today, if you told allison you love her as soon as you see her? For example, every morning when you both wake up. First words- "Good morning, I hope you slept well; it makes me h as happy to see you, I love you so much." I am asking from a place of curiosity. Mental health has become such an amazing part of my journey and my boyfriend's journey. I strive to learn and share as much as I can. God bless you, each and every one.
