Living With The 2018 BMW F90 M5: Issues To Look Out For

This week I go into the ownership experience of the 2018 BMW M5. The M5 is a high-performance luxury sedan that offers incredible performance, handling, and luxury. However, as with any high-performance car, there are some potential issues that owners should be aware of.
In this video I go over the issues that my family and I have encountered in our 5 years of owning this Ultimate Driving Machine. Some of these issues you may already know, and some others not. I want to provide any current owners or future potential owners a list of things that I've dealt with so far.
Hopefully you find this video useful and will allow you to know of some issues that a long term owner has dealt with.

Vehicle was purchased as certified pre-owned with only 500 miles on it. My brother and I are the 2nd owners of the vehicle. The car has never been tracked nor modified. Been doing all the servicing at a BMW Certified M dealership in Pennsylvania.

Really feels like your issues are more dealership related. Whilst these cars are complex, they are generally very reliable and issues seem to be rare - even on higher mileage examples. The coolant expansion tank leaking is a known issue on pre-LCI cars, and if it's not fixed quickly then it can lead to heat related issues on the engine. Hope it all gets sorted soon! 🙂

If the car has 30k miles, it likely needs spark plugs, and should fix your idle issue. My 2019 comp has 50k miles and it’s had plugs changed every 20k miles. Also, another major known problem with these cars is the radiator expansion tank. Pop the hood, if it has white residue anywhere around it, have the dealer replace it immediately. That tank sets directly over cylinder #5 I believe it is, and radiator fluid drips right down on the injector connector and coil connector. Can cause catastrophic engine damage if left alone.

+1 for spark plugs, b58 eats spark plugs 1 set for each 2 or maybe 3 oil changes.

Why does the s63 engine needs spark plugs replaced so often?

I feel the same thing with my F90 on idle, the car feels like its shaking if you pay attention closely, but if you get distracted or aren’t paying attention you wont feel it

I'm kinda glad to hear that (not in a bad way - but knowing that I'm not the only one). You think that's normal? Did you have any issues associated with the low pressure fuel pump?

@@RichWithCars I had the same feeling albeit on an 8 series. M850i. Never had that issue on my F82 (2016) BMW M4. Seems normal. 50k miles on the car as well. Also 40k miles in, the car would kind of take a second to crank up and start, but it would only do that like once every 15 startups. Changed plugs at 20k so it couldn’t be that and it wasn’t the fuel pump. Just weird.

Hi, when you mentioned (close to the end of your presentation) the issue with the HVAC blowing warm air, it is possible the system, while sensing the interior air quality, decided to open a fresh air vent to let fresh air in the cabin. Once the cabin air quality becomes normal ( according to BMW standards), then the system closes the vent, and air recirculates in the cabin. Does it help? Your thoughts?

It's possible, but I don't understand why the dealership couldn't explain that to me. All they said was that the system was working normally. Thanks for your input.

from what i have seen, 2018 was a bad year for the M5, First year of the F90, 19 and up are much better, 2021 LCI and up would be best

Too bad for me. The other downside was the way I was treated by both the dealer and corporate....I still respect BMW for the crazy performance they have....

No pump issues on my 18 but I DID change the oil pressure actuator in the vanos solenoid something I just chased down idk if would have been a problem but drove 40knmiles on e30 stage 2

Thats NUTS you have an M5. I test drove a 21 M5, E63, 911 prior to ordering my LC. I almost ordered the M5 because i loved it so much. Hillarious to see you have both of my cars. Well i didn't actually buy the M5. But in my mind i kinda did.

I track and ride motos, the M5 had the balls to hang w/ my 1000's honest to god i could see my window and HAVE it right then and there just like on my bike. OMG 😈 Delicious. But then i thought of all the stuff your running into. My bane in the LC is just noises here and there which i have taken in to hunt down and eliminate. No regrets.

This one I shared with my bro. He drove it most of the time. But I'm definitely grateful 🙏 . Cool to see the differences between the LC and M5. M5 is MUCH faster and way more tech - no comparison. But the LC has a higher build quality, better reliability and nicer design. I feel more of a sense of occasion when driving the LC vs the M5.

Wow you having issues reminds me of old memories of owning a BMW... I wanted an M5 but after hearing this... Im turn off. It gets old going back to the deanship over and over. Ill just stick with my tundra... and motorcycles

Yeah, it's quite unfortunate because I do like BMW's for their performance pedigree, but reliability and after sales service experience isn't great... BMW has a lot of models I'd love to try out/own such as the M8, M3/M4, X5M - but the experience just turned me off....

Whilst I get that this particular vehicle has issues, there's no explanation of the history? How many owners, full BMW servicing and has it been modified now and/or previously? I owned a 2019 M5 Competition from new and completed 40k miles (incl 4-6 track days every year) over 4 years with no issues - the only warranty was to change the coolant tank because it was leaking slightly (known issue on pre-LCI cars).

I have a 2018 M5 with 44 000 miles on it and the only 2 problems ive had is the leaking coolant tank which needed to be replaced and an issue witu sensors which is still ongoing (they randomly detect an object when i back out of the driveway and smash the breaks on me). Neverheless it happens. 1/5 times and BMW said they cant reproduce it...

The PDC has an option where it will automatically brake if you get close to an object. Go into PDC settings and deactivate it from there. It’s called PDC with Braking Intervention.
