Love my 2019 718 Cayman GTS. The engineers at Porsche knocked it out of the park creating a car that is sub 4 seconds 0-60 while getting 22MPG around town.

I ordered a 2015 Boxster GTS manual from the factory intending to track it and I have--many days on a handful of tracks in the Southeast, U.S. The car loves it. Nothing has ever failed or malfunctioned. Yes, by tracking the Boxster I feel I'm getting my money's worth out of the car. The risk in tracking it, to me, is less than driving in stop and go traffic and against on-coming cars. If you're a good driver, track it!

Did you make any mods before tracking? Like baffled oil pan or maybe a second radiator? Or is she bone stock from that perspective?

Reasons for PDK: 1) city traffic 2) 7 speed vs 6 speed long ratios 3) launch control 4) quicker acceleration 5) better mileage. I normally go for a manual (1987 944) but technology has improved!

I have a 718 GTS with PDK. It's an unbelievable car! I've had 3 prior 911's which are also great cars, but the driving characteristics of this car are spectacular. It's absolutely sublime!

My choice would be PDK, but frankly I’m just “over” manual gearboxes... PDK is marginally quicker, shifts are lightning, requires no work and still offers as much satisfaction...
@jabbawitz2 жыл бұрын
I will miss my manual 981S at times, but the PDK in my newer 718 GTS is amazing. It's just faster and better on the track and in traffic. It thinks and reacts quicker than I can with a manual, which is something you could not say back in the early 2000s. I remember when old torque converter autos were dogs. The stick in my dad's Acura Legend felt like a rocket at 8 sec 0-60. Lol!

I mean, when you have driven manual transmissions for a while, it's like second nature when driving? I don't get the statement(from someone who owns a PDK.. and loves it, but has also driven manual transmissions more years of my life than not).
@JD-ze2fy6 жыл бұрын
I bought a 718 GTS specifically for a track car. Yeah, I got the PDK and would never get a sunroof in this car. You want the sun, stick with a Boxster or cabriolet. I never open the sun roof on my other cars. By the way, I also kept my 987 Boxster S as a summer weekend car. Never had any real interest in a 911. For me, Porsche history was all about the 550. The 911 was a squashed Beetle, now it seems like a giant GT car. Maybe if I did a lot of highway miles, I might find the 911 desirable but for twisty roads the Cayman/ Boxster is the way to go, IMO. Nice that you didn’t spend half the video whining about the sound( like some others). Congrats for moving one.
@sixpotshot6 жыл бұрын
well said about the 550 / 911. Porsche is stuck in a 911 psychosis...re tracking the 718: fine if you bear in mind that this is not a GT Porsche and hasn't been designed with that in mind - see PCA vid on the GT4, in case you haven't already, and the mechanical changes to cope with higher loads are laid bare in there plus there is no proper dry -sump...I think even on the GT4 albeit Porsche may have made a tweak or two on this one but you have to bear that in mind if you do proper/real track work: on high loads the engine on your 718 will struggle for decent lube...over time that means a faster than expected wear rate
@JD-ze2fy6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I'll take a look at that suggested vid. I'm familiar with issues on older generation Caymans but I haven't seen a lot of data on the 718 given it's newness. My goal with this car was to try avoid going down the "bottomless pit of mods" for a while. We'll see how that works out.

@JD-ze2fy6 жыл бұрын
I agree. Horses for courses. I'm not against the 911. In fact, for an around town shopping car or long distance drive, I would prefer a 911. I really like back seats. It irks me to have to open the trunk constantly to store items. Even my wife's purse doesn't fit in my Boxster. If she is driving, the first thing she does is plop her purse on my lap! If I had a dog or small kids ( in that order) I'm not sure I would even consider a 718. I also have my limit on what I am going to thrash around a track. Paying up 30 or 40% more ( sort of apples to apples) for a 911 seems painful to me. We each have to draw the line somewhere. I don't think comparing a stripped 911 is all that useful to a reasonably well equipped 718. I think the 718 has a niche. It would be nice if more people appreciated it for what it is and not be so concerned about what it isn't. I think at this point more "professional" reviewers are coming around, even if there are still a number of social media squawkers whinging about sound and 4 cylinders.

I track my M2 and it does great and have considered a 918 Cayman S for track work but I think your suggestion of the MX-5 Cup car is probably the best way to go, the only downside is when you get a dedicated track car like that is you then need a trailer and a truck so it is a bigger commitment in terms of space and money. BTW, I am so tired of hearing the PDK versus manual debate. We should be celebrating the fact we have a choice instead of shaming people who want a PDK (for any reason). Journalists have really worn this debate out. Unless your paying for my car you don't get a vote so stop telling me what transmission to get!

Sadly, I had to let go my 987.2 Cayman S. Would I daily a 982? Yes. Would I track a 982? Yes. The only way I’ll feel like I’m getting my money’s worth out of the car would be by tracking it. The track is really the only place where I can legally drive the car I such a way that I could fully enjoy it. On the road, I would only be using a small fraction of the car’s capability. I would then argue, “Why spend all that money on that car?” Granted, I understand it’s a road car, but it’s a road car that is complete overkill for my daily needs, which are well-fulfilled by a Subaru Outback. On track, I might find myself at full throttle much more than on the road. On track, I would be threshold braking, trailbraking, etc. I would be able to explore the limits of adhesion. I could guide the car as it slides through a corner-managing oversteer, understeer, etc. I could be hitting apexes and tracking out in a magnificent, confidence-inspiring package at the limit of adhesion. That’s too much fun! Why leave that capability on the sidelines? Why pay for it if I’m not going to use it? Carrera T vs. 718 Cayman GTS? If new, Carrera T. I have done the Cayman thing. I want the 911. It’s an icon. Plus, 4-wheel steering, LSD... If I’m in the used market in the future, well... I’ll just have to see where my budget is, what cars are available, and at what price. Either should be great based on my enjoyment of the 991.2 C2S and 982 Boxster S at Porsche Sport Driving School-the closest I have come to driving either of the two cars being discussed.

Not buying the manual transmission argument. PDK for me. It’s sounds so sweet as it blips through the gears. And as a daily drive in real stop start traffic...... a clutch is sooo old. I don’t track mine. Never would get a sun roof even if offered.
@travis38106 жыл бұрын
The manual has auto blipping downshifts that are about as fast as a pdk. Id get the manual because I like being in control. I don't plan on living in a city, so traffic wouldn't be an issue for me. And i would take a sunroof, not to open because I hate wind noise, but to let some extra light in (aka I don't like Boxster's so that argument is useless on me).

I drive a 2017 Cayman S with PDK. To me, the technology and operation of the PDK makes all the difference. It is so responsive and smooth that I can’t see me driving a manual. I guess it comes down to personal choice. But you can’t argue with the fact that the PDK develops more torque and is quicker in zero to tests.

I have 2017 718 Boxster S manual. Cost 69,500. Custom allocation. You don’t need to spend 92,000 to get all the goodness. I have driven 6 HPDE days so far. Even the most base Boxster/cayman is way more capable on a track then anyone unless your a professional driver can exploit. I actually love the sound. The midrange and low end torque is way better then the previous generation 6. I can say this as my previous car was 2010 S. I can pull from second or third and from 2500-4000 rpm with the same acceleration out of a corner.

Totally agree with your conclusion...the lack of a sunroof (as an option) is unfortunate. I realize the projection here is driving purity, AND there's the full on convertible in the Boxster, but a sunroof in the Cayman should be an option for those who opt to daily the car.
@MisterBeta6 жыл бұрын
Interesting video MotoMan; and I have a few thoughts on the points you raised and on the comments of others here. BTW, I ordered a GTS with the options I wanted from the factory. Took a few months for delivery, but the flip side is I won’t be bugged for years to come over why I didn’t have a certain option. Sun roof: having previously owned a car with a leaky sunroof, I have no interest possibly encountering that problem again. I also bought a new Macan S at the time of the GTS order, and it had a sunroof, which is standard on a Macan. Would have rather not have a sunroof there, but had no choice. Ceramic brakes: I went with steal brakes as I couldn’t see the added expense providing any value for my driving needs. I live in the real world of car driving. PDK: I got the PDK, as it makes life simpler. Yeah I know sifting speed is a factor, but my reasons for the PDK were more basic. I sometimes drink coffee when I drive. Also my wife will drive this car, and though she can drive a manual, she rather drive an automatic. I previously owned a 2006 BMW Z4 M as a 3rd car, and she felt the clutch was “too stiff” for her, and as a result she never drove it. She is entitled to some fun also. Track car: I agree, an optioned out Cayman GTS is too much money to hurl around the track. However, I may do a track day to get a sense of the car’s ability and have some fun. Cayman GTS vs a 911. Been there and done that. I previously owned ‘75 and ‘77 911s (both bought new, so you can tell I am old- if 65 is old). Nice cars for the time, but if I got too aggressive, I would end up swapping the frond and rear ends. I get it- stability electronics and all wheel drive can solve the problem to some extent, assuming you get into a spin situation in the first place. I did briefly consider ordering 911 GTS with the same options as my Cayman GTS, but I would be spending about $50k more. Given that I sold appreciated securities for the car purchase that I will pay capital gains taxes on, and add in sales tax, the 911 GTS was a $210k hit on my wallet. Oh, and for a depreciating asset. Came close but didn’t. I don’t think I will regret going with the Cayman GTS over a 911. Dogs in cars: I have two Shi Tzu’s. One will ride in the passenger seat, or on my wife’s lap, the other is on my lap looking out of the car, or on the passenger floor. A Cayman is not a great dog transporter. Oh, and may I add my thoughts on four vs. six cylinder Porsche engines? First off, the Cayman GTS has plenty of power. Secondly, anyone with a V8 sports car thinks fours and sixes are wimpy sounding. Don’t even consider what V12 owners think.

I think you bring a lot of very pertinent points. I would go for the 911 Carrera t because it is more special in every measure. I'm with you with the track thing: I would not risk a 92k car on the track, which brings the point of a lot of daily driving niceties as a sunroof and comfort. Same thing with the manual, I could not care less that I can shave a few hundredth in my shifts, but I can care about the fun of shifting. I had a 2008 VW R32 with the DSG. After one week of dayly driving the car in heavy Chicago traffic, I developed an allergy to the gearbox and I went to a manual BMW 128i that was way more livable in that traffic and way more fun on open road. I have been looking at many options to replace the 128i and the only one I am considering is a used 911 997 or 991 Carrera 2 manual, hard to find with am interior they is not black (I despise black interiors) and a sunroof

I'd say my dream Porsche right now would be a Cayman GT4. I currently own two porsche's right now, a 987 boxster and 997 Carrera. If i had a free weekend to take the car out, i would much rather take the boxster. Given the mid engine lay out of the car, it provides confident steering and handling and also engages your senses more so than the 911. Hearing the flat 6 literally behind you makes hearing that engine howl at high RPM that much easier. The 911 has the speed, but the 987 has just about everything else in a driver's car.

I also own a manual 718 GTS in the UK and it's an amazing car. I'm a purist, I spent a lot of time debating between the 981 and the 718 GTS as I wanted the flat 6. In the end the styling both inside and out, the increased performance and the tech made me go with the 718 and give up (for now) the flat 6 dream. Also, a second hand 981 GTS was still selling for the same price as a new 718 GTS and the lure of a new car was also nice. I have absolutely no regrets. The 718 does not sound bad, it just doesn't sound like a flat six. It also doesn't sound like a wrx. The 718 Boxster S with PDK works just fine for me, and I paid under $80k. The GTS is always a nice performance package with the various stuff included and the slight added power, but you have to pay a ridiculous amount extra for the "GTS Interior" with contrasting stitching. The ceramic brakes are something I'd put on the GT3 RS or a GT4 Clubsport, for me and much of the Porsche world, the standard red brakes work fine. So by the time you option the car with Bose, nav, or whatever, you're well into 911 territory. If you want fast and basic, better to wait for the next GT4 (or buy a used one) with the flat 6 from the 911 (the new GT4 will have a detuned version of the GT3 engine). Otherwise, for $90k+ I'd rather get a base 911 Carrera with 7-speed and a few options to make it a nice driver. Of course now you have to wait for the next gen 911 (the 991 is at the end of its run).

Currently drive a 987.1 '08 CS manual with Borla XR1 exhaust. The flat 6 sound through that exhaust is orgasmic and I'm never getting rid of it. The manual is fine for me even in occasional stop and go traffic but mine is a weekend car. If I had to daily it and were about 20 years older, I'm 55, I'd probably want a PDK. For the 90-110k range, I'd get a lightly used 911T for my DD. That way I could have my cake (987.1) and eat it too (911T).

I have a 987.1 that I daily and track. That being said, i would take a T over a 718. I really can't get past the engine note.

I do like the way the Cayman drives - I thought the previous 6 cylinder car handled beautifully and also had the right sound. However, for this kind of money, I'd go for the 911T every time. My current Porsche (for weekends and special occasions is a 993 Carrera. Cheers

For me ..... 911 over 718 but, get both, the 911 to track and the Boxster for weekends. I did my Jersey to NYC (West Side Hwy) commute in my 944turbo (‘88) everyday for 10 plus years, that’s traffic. The drive with the 5 speed was ez (the throttle is also the brakes). But... to be fair I have done the last 17 years in my Evo (‘03). Did some commute years in my Miata too. Maybe should check myself in. 😊

Your mate is is just unlucky, I've tracked very car... generally the brakes take the biggest hit but they can be replaced . ( brake fuild upgrade) Would be an absolute sin not to take the 718 out, how else are you going to experience the mid engine. I have always wanted the audi 2.5t v5 in the Cayman, it would sound amazing.
@sixpotshot6 жыл бұрын
Audi 5 in a Cayman / Boxster: agree as it is so much better than the crappy 4 Porsche came up with. BUT it would destroy the packaging e.g. rear boot gone and the handling as well as it would push the centre of gravity way up...

I have a 991.1 4s now and had a Cayman 987 s and a Boxster 986 s. The Cayman was the most engaging and only had the sport chrono option. The Boxster had too much flex. The 991 is too much for PA and DE roads but a lot of fun even with PDK. Overall the Cayman was the most fun, the 991 is a great upgrade for the right scenarios. I wouldn’t take a Porsche to the track, I’d take an s2000.
@jabbawitz2 жыл бұрын
I had an S2000 (2005 without stability control), and what I know of it and what I have recently seen at the track, the S2000 is tricky on the track. I took my 981 Boxster S manual to the track and had a ball. Wanted to go a little faster so got a 718 Cayman GTS PDK. HPDE isn't likely to ruin your car, so why not take it to the track and enjoy it while vastly improving your mastery of the car for safer street driving?
@Jono21136 жыл бұрын
I'm 52 and have had only manual transmissions...until 2016 when I got an M235i with the best auto trans ever. I've learned to love it. Even on the Dragon's Tail it was 0 sacrifice. And it is better in true stop and go traffic, which was not what you were in as you only stopped once! :-) If I could afford it, I would get a Cayman as my daily. I don't care if its an old 6 or the new 4T. And I would prefer a manual, but take the PDK if it was the best used car deal. For new I might have to flip a coin between a $92k GTS or the $105k minimal spec 911. Actually I would get the base (yes, base) Cayman manual with my minimal options bring it to $69,990. Also I have a bad back which does make things better with an auto/pdk.
@Jono21136 жыл бұрын
Oh, and track? yes, get an MX-5 or miata cup. Or you can drive what I did, a 1983 944. That is a true analog experience, not even anti-lock breaks, just my right foot! Another advantage of the PDK, you can't do the accidental money shift. I've never done that in any of my manuals...but if I did, I'm sure it would be in brand new Porsche!
@TheGreatLoco6 жыл бұрын
Automatic is better in town for two reasons. First you drive with one hand with more freedom, going up on a slope in town with manual is also stressful because you need perfect timing with the clutch and gas pedals otherwise the car will return and hit the car behind or stall. Other reasons are that is more relaxing, that you can quickly burn the clutch easily if unecessarilly pressed too often, or rev the engine unecessarilly shorting it's lifetime. Porsche's automatic has the manual mode, so except for being a very expensive option there are few drawbacks. Maybe for a weekend fun car, manual is fine. For a daily driver in a big city, it's less comfortable. But you get used. The question is why to live with that, when spending/financing $80.000.

@mdrobc136 жыл бұрын
Hmm..have had both of them...multiple 911's and in fact went from an 997.2 C4S to a 981 Cayman S in 2014 as it was the better driver's car for reasons you mentioned in the review of this 718 Cayman GTS (i.e. engine position, driving position, dynamics, power-weight, etc). Absolutely loved that car and the flat 6 engine IMHO is better than the current 718s although the power-torque curves have gotten infinitely better with Porsche turbo charging the 991.2s and now the 718s. However I currently no longer own my 981 despite it being one of the best cars I've driven having sold it for its bigger brother a 991.1 Carrera S. Less of a driver's car in that it doesn't have that go kart feel reflexively and dynamics that the mid engine Cayman is capable of...but in terms of size and driving feel, power and sound among others..the 991.1 just does it for me! Best of all worlds still....its a supercar with less than super car $$ (depending on how optioned granted and model purchased). Would I buy another Cayman like this 718? If cash is no object...hell yes. Having both in the garage would be like yin-yang to any driver. Would I pay $90k for a Cayman GTS such as this? Not so...especially the Carbon Ceramic brakes..IMHO overkill unless you're tracking it regularly...something I just wouldn't do either in an $92k sports car! Lower price points for that..hell I'd get a gen 1 Cayman 1st before doing that to a 718 or even previous model 981....too expensive a proposition for the enjoyment. But that's me. Would I get a GTS over a base similarly optioned..yes...over an S? Depends as some of the give-take between the two can be a point of personal preference and budget tolerances. But the GTS I agree is usually the bargain over a similarly optioned base or S. Problem is Porsche knows that and so finding one new or used at that bargain price or deal point becomes sometimes enough to drive you insane. Otherwise...still best cars I've ever owned! Agree on that! Great review Motoman!

If you aren’t going to track it, and want a sunroof, what’s wrong with a Boxster? I have one and I love it. It’s a base model (didn’t have a large budget) but it has plenty of power and speed for my needs. I wouldn’t mind a 911 either but for similar specs, they are just too expensive for me to justify it. The only potential benefit of a 911 is bragging rights (which I don’t care about) or hauling around kids in the back seat. Since I don’t have kids, the extra storage in the “perfect” Porsche is just that, perfect. Also, sorry, but manuals do get old after about 15 minutes in true stop-n-go traffic

Have 2007 Cayman S w/ Fabspeed headers, GT 3 intake plenum and flashed chip making about 365 HP. It has 344,000 miles on it and is an absolute blast to drive. BEST car I ever owned period. If you're going to spend 92 k on the GTS I would hold off and buy either a used GT4 ( prices will drop significantly once the gen 2 GT4 comes out)or spend a bit more on the 2nd gen 4.0L GT4. Have a deposit on next gen GT4 and will keep the '07 for a daily driver as the '07 has been a bullet proof car. Engine is original w/ original IMS bearing, just chg oil every 5k. The mods on my car cost about 4k. Get a used Cayman S, jack it up a bit and every time you hit an on ramp pretend you're at Sebring. You cannot beat .... BTW.... I have the SIX Speed Manual w/ custom short throw shifter... 300K on the clutch! Heel toe shifting the whole experience is a blast every time I get in the cockpit. MOTOMAN is right... The only people who should buy a PDK should be legit race drivers or folks who cannot figure out how to properly drive a manual. Get a Benz or a Bimmer. I can tell the pdk drivers THIS having driven such when I had a loaner for service... Wait until you're trying to make a Left turn w/ a PDK equipped car.... and you NEEEED to go and the PDK starts... ....T H I N K I N G........ Faster on the track but presents some ISSUES in traffic... daily driving.... When I want to GO... No waiting when I let out the clutch and apply the GAS... My car GOOOOO's!

I get irritated that many cars don't have a sunroof delete option! It will only jam when open just as it starts raining. It raises the center of gravity. It will eventually leak. It will however fill one one of those embarrassing blank covers on the dome light cluster.

Don’t know why people have to tell others what options to get on a vehicle that’s not theirs. However, what you’ve shown as “traffic” isn’t really it. That isn’t an hour of 5-10 Km/H traffic in rush hour Toronto, or any other super busy downtown city.

Love your dog….love your comments on the pdk even more. Sports cars should come with three pedals….full stop. I live on the east coast in the US and rather than spend 92k on one car with a seemingly good performing turbo four I spent 67k on two cars….. ….a lightly used BRZ and a 981 boxster s. The former is a car that should get more love than it does and I can beat on as a daily and the latter gives me enough power and enough rigidity to not regret getting a cayman. Plus I can drop the top…..plus I have the flat 6…..and I saved a fair bit of $ Would I prefer the 911? Potentially. But money is not endless for me and the same vintage 911 would cost me easily 35-40k more.
@williamw99186 жыл бұрын
if you're gonna be tracking a car, carbon ceramics are a very expensive proposition. they may "only" be $7200 for the option, but look up how much it costs to REPLACE the rotors -- $20,000 +. $25,000 for a 911 / GT3. And PCCBs will last 50-60k miles for "normal" driving, but they say track driving *dramatically* reduces the life of these things. It's not something you want to be facing 15-20k miles into ownership. i know people with 15-20k mile porsches with PCCBs that no longer pass the "CPO" threshold for rotor density. Yikes. That being said, I still ordered my GT3 with PCCBs. you know, for the yellow calipers and less brake dust :D W

I have a PDK Cayman and I can drive a manual, too. Who the ... cares. I want to drink my coffee on my way to work, in traffic, enjoying my engine music b/c I'm done steering with my knees. You buy either one b/c of the benefits of either choice, one isn't a better (experience) than the other and that's what we are talking about...the experience not performance on public streets. Furthermore, I totally agree with you on the sunroof...which is why I'll probably end up with an imperfect Porsche someday again.
