Here is what he does not see: This car is build for curves. I had the fun of Taking Electra (my i8) on a tour from Geneva to St Tropez 2 weeks ago in a little drive around rally with about 8 Porsches, a Jaguar F and an Mercedes AMG. The week part where actually the tires - Speed was amazingly fine, to the point the POrsche drivers where shocked. Yes, you loose on higher speeds (Drag Race), but up a mountain pass, down the other side the mix engine provides amazingly fast responses and high torgue. I had no problem keeping up with all the high power cars at all - up to the point my tires started fading. So, what comes out of that? * A little more performance would be nice. Time for tuning. * Replace tires with AC Schnutzer wide tires (195 -> 245, 215 -> 285) to get more grip. But no, power and speed NEVER where an issue. In Europe we do not do drag racing so much ;) we find it boring. We love curvy things.

The way I see it, the i8 is a fashion statement like the RAZR, a proof that EVs don't have to look like the (very explicit language) cars from The Demolition Man & a study into wether Carbon Fiber can be mass produced & still be profitable or not. Nice Review, very appealing Filming; but not quite precise: 1. The Trunk ist capable to fit one normal Cabin Luggage Trolley plus some smaller Luggage as small Bags and Shoes. Behind the Seats is a Load of Space Minimum 2 Trolleys or big Sports Bags/Weekender. Ps: Most of the Reviews rather like the Car except for the small Engine. But the Driving Experience is top; the Design ist stunning an not to be depending on Charging Stations is a big Plus. You are right eather Drive in Sport or Electric Mode. It is still the only Roadster that can be driven completely Electric; thats such a unique Feeling! I love my 2018 i8 Roadster. It is a Keeper; especially the Prices are still relatively low!

My 2019 i8 Roadster get 30 miles of EV range, if driven meticulously. Fyi. Also, only 3800 i8 Roadsters were ever built. I LOVE EXCLUSIVITY!!!!!!!

Panamera E-Hybrib.. is, I think @400 hp, plus you get about 30 miles on full electric at 80 mph? (I am probably way off, but in the ball park). So, it can be done.. at a lower price too.

I had exactly the same problem with my i8. I could never get the 14 mile range via charging except once or twice. Like you found, if I drove agressivly in sport mode then I could see the range of the battery increase but via the charger (which was a wall mounted BMW charger operting at 240V here in the U.K), was dissapointing. Loved the car but too many pitfalls.

Dunno how you guys are driving your vehicles, always flat to the floor and aggressively swerving trough traffic? I have the pre-facelift i8 with the smaller battery and I can get 30 km (18 miles) out of the 10 year old HV battery in it. Of course this requires that you don't drive like a wannabe F1 driver or a "chav" (UK term for trash ppls). Of course this or any other EV kind of vehicle will not get the maximum "range" if its driven on (US) highway speeds, or above those. Try to drive any hybrid vehicle or a "tesla" or such 120-140 kph (70-80 mph) and the range just disappears in to the thin air. Sweet spot for any such vehicle is either downtown, suburbs or curvy roads with speed limits something like 80 kph (50 mph). And those are plenty here in Europe.

I have an s550 bought in 2017 right before they changed the body, and I have an i8 roadster the roadster is WAY more fun to drive and has way better tech imo. The Benz feels like a boat. It feels heavy and wide but it’s good luxury. The i8 is just as smooth when in electric mode.

I disagree I own a roadster in black. It’s faster thank people think, I live in NYC it’s an awesome city car, and rides smoother than my Benz when I put it in electric mode. The looks of the car are also hard to beat. With a v8 or v10 the car would prob go for 200k+ at that range you might as well buy a Lambo or Ferrari. I think they were smart about it tbh

The problem with this car is that it's too flamboyant for it own good. It looks like it drives like a Ferrari but it really drives like a Lexus. It's a hybrid so you'd think you'd have the fuel efficiency of a Prius. And yet despite having neither of those it's nowhere near as practical as a Boxster, a Z4 or a SLC and costing double to triple the price. BMW should've started with a Panamera / Model S competitor, that way they would have a lot more room to work with, keep the practicality and save the embarrassment of your customer base having to explain that their "super car" is slower than a Mustang

@@chatchi 90% of the trash talk about BMW i8 here in YT is from peoples whom never driven, never owned anything even remotely new sports car nor ca they afford the i8 or the "counterpart they would rather choose", the 911 or used McLaren, lel. I like my 2014 i8 just fine. It fits its spot very well when you have your home charger and you don't imagine that the i8 is counterpart to cars like a Ferrari 458, Audi R8 V10 or McLaren 650S. The sound of silence with your supercar looking sportscar is ... well you have to experience it. And have a mindset totally opposite that your average "lambo chavs" terrorising the neighborhood of Knightsbridge in London, UK.

the 918 is a million dolar hipercar a like 959 and Carerra GT a tour the force of Porsches technical abilities. Out of reach of most car enthusiasts. Porsche alredy made a new Panamara a hybrid but again that not a pure super sport car. it's a very quick family/executive car. Once Porsche will hybridizate their most famous sports car then I recon we will see how good or bad is the hybrid system on the new NSX

The fuel economy of this car is very disappointing. Considering all the weight savings with the carbon and the electric motors and batteries and it only gets 28 mpg at best. I would expect at least 30 mpg combined or even Prius-like fuel economy. I know it's MUCH sportier than a Prius, but it also weighs less and has a smaller engine. The Lexus LC500h get better fuel economy than this and it's not even a plug-in hybrid. Honestly, this car just isn't worth $170,000 dollars to me. I could get an Acura NSX or both the LC500 and 500h. Even the Porsche Panamera hybrid turbo gets better fuel economy and it's bigger, faster, and a Porsche. :_(

This car is now discontinued after 23 months of production - you can buy one with 30% off (depn up front if you like) just like you could on the unloved Z8 and SLS in 2003 and 2012 - both are now great investments now -the i8 will be much sought after in ten years like those two cars and will start going up in value in just 5 yrs....I bought all 3 SLS/Z8/i8r cars btw, so have an idea of what the mkt is on rare cars....
