I have a 2009 R1200RT that is simply THE bike to ride. Absolutely reliable, fast, comfortable, spacious, a daemon on curvy roads, a joy to ride. This bike puts a smile on my face every single time I ride. And it’s almost 16 years old…

RT is the best bike just as a motorcycle, that I’ve ever had out of 15+ bikes. It has all, no need to buy accessories. And it is very agile. Waiting for the 1300 with a lighter front maybe.

I've wanted an RT since I got to demo a R1200RT and then the R1250RT the following year. This year I picked up an 2024 R1250RT in March. I've owned several bikes and this is by far the best all-arounder. It's my first BMW and so far I love it. Every once in a while I missed the insanity of my KTM 1290 SAS, but that is happening less and less. The RT's power is more than adequate, and it's so much more nimble with the 17" front and rear. Yours and Big Rock Moto's content were a big part of my decision to finally pull the trigger and buy the bike I've wanted for years. It turned over 2k miles today!

I'm 28 years old, applying for MD/PhD programs, and I found an outlet through wanting to start riding to get away from the monotony of my studies. Man, you don't know how much your channel means to me. I absolutely abhor the riding community because it seems like a bunch of egocentric people who are entitled to use the road as they please without regard for the consequences for others. And since it supposedly looks cool, guys on channels perpetuate that mentality because it gets views. Motorcyclists, to me, seemed like a bunch of people who wanted to keep up with a certain self-image instead of the enjoyment of the ride. But your channel made me enthusiastic because I see myself doing what you do. Enjoying motorcycles because you enjoy them and bringing your family along for a fun time and a bonding experience. Thanks for being a chill dude and a good inspiration to current and future riders like myself.

I purchased a brand new BMW R 1200 RT 132 months ago 11 years in a month I put 63,000 miles on it. It’s been well-maintained. The bike still looks brand new and it has been an awesome motorcycle. It’s only 1170 cc but the bike is fantastic, the reason you pay so much for these bikes is because they are fantastic. I think that BMW puts more effort into making these bikes look great and perform great. I’ve heard people say that the older bikes are more reliable than the new ones. I don’t know if that’s true or not cause I don’t own a new one not that I wouldn’t like to, but the prices keep going up.☝️

Fantastic is obviously personal. I own two Beemers, a RT and a GS. They are good bikes, but fantastic... There are many engineering short comings, on the RT actually more than on the GS. Simple things, like using different size and type bolts to fix fittings. You can take apart all Japanese bikes with a handfull of tools, if you know one Japanese bike, you know them all. Try that with a Beemer (or an Italian bike for that matter). Beemers also tend to need more maintenance than, as an example, a Honda. Speaking from experience here...

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with a R1250RT, I had a R1200RT 2006 back then and could not be happier with that bike, rode 123k in 3 years and not a single complaint, wonderful machine! That lead me to buy last year a 2023 R1250RT, it is 9000km now and riding like a queen of tarmac, your review makes me very relieved as I was wondering if the BMW bikes kept the quality standards that I love so much, love everything about this bike (mine is Alpine white), and feels great knowing it is still reliable as before, big thank you brother, greetings from Belgium 🇧🇪!

I have this Blue 2021 RT and love it still. I ride with no luggage throughout the Texas Hill Country loaded with endless sweepers and technical roads that I blast around as it just falls into the corner and locks in throughout. I avg 12,000 miles on Dunlap RoadSmart III as I ride about 13,000 miles per year. I do save by doing my own routine service, which is part of the overall fun. I detest the quirky Nav system and therefore do not use it. I throw on the luggage for big rides and burn miles in total comfort. This is by far the best all around bike I could own as I have, for my needs, plenty of exhilarating sport and loads of chewing up the miles touring. Love your review, spot on.

I bought new in April 2021 so same age as this review. Got just under 20k miles. Some problems. Engine management light came on at around 15k and it turned out to be the exhaust flap, a renowned problem. Fixed under warranty. I utilised a dealer some 250 miles from home for logistical reasons. On the way home, just 45 miles into my journey, I detected a really bad vibration in the front end that turned out to be a wheel bearing. Got recovered and back to dealer and again fixed under warranty. Now got a letter to say shaft drive has to be lubed every 12k miles and replaced (under warranty for life of bike) every 36k miles. Whaaat! That’s not much more than a chain lasts. And the problem doesn’t seem to have been sorted as newer models bought now still have the issue but now it’s not under warranty and must be paid for as a service item (this is my understanding and I may be wrong as to this latter point). Having said which I do like the bike. It’s very comfy, economical, and has an awesome engine. Mind you that TFT navigation is another story……

Due to family tragedy, I had to sell my 2020 R1250RT about a year ago. I miss it daily. Truly the best bike I’ve ever ridden: a masterpiece. Bought a friend’s Africa Twin for a deal a few months ago. It feels like a crude dirt bike, and the wind buffeting literally blurs my vision.

Nice review Scott. I've just traded my 2016 FJR ES for a new RT, it's going to be about six weeks until it arrives. After riding the RT back to back with my FJR, I have to say, it really is night and day difference, the RT makes my bike feel like a 600 as it fizzes and vibrates, the RT is just so smooth and far more nimble too. I couldn't stretch to a top box, so it'll have to be my old faithful givi 👍🏻

Had mine in the shop (Bonn BMW) last week for its 40,000km service. I purchased it in May 2021 and likewise have had absolutely no reliability issues with the bike. The driveshaft was checked and BMW confirmed that the driveshaft will be replaced free of charge at 60,000km (which is something I've been aware of for some time). Even after 40,000km it still feels like a treat to ride!

The 1200 RT was the most practical bike I ever owned. I always used the top box and only had the side cases for long trips. Worked great with cold weather here in Dallas, Texas. If you love to tour with your wife and she loves the Trident, just give the Tiger 660 a try!! I have the 1250RT, and had the trident at the same time, which i later traded in for a Tiger 660 and i couldn't be happier. The Little tiger still retains 85% of fun and agility of the Trident, but adds up a lot more comfort, space and wind protection.

It’s a fantastic bike, when it works. I got mine in 2023 and already had parts of the motor replaced (loud ticking noise), battery replaced, and most recently the bike was eating electricity even when parked, draining battery, so that had to get fixed also (software update). I still like the bike but God this has been painful for me. Luckily the dealer has been fantastic. My S1000XR has had no problems, you cant win them all 😋.

Absolutely loved my 1250 RT. My bike was recently written off (vandalism) and now I'm having to decide would I buy it again or get the 1300 GS?! Yes I would buy the RT again in a second. Rode it across Canada coast to coast 2 up and it was the perfect tool for the job. But the GS opens up some off road camping so I'm torn. People also say the GS is very comfortable for road touring. Wife loves the RT and is very comfortable as passenger so I think that might end up being the deciding factor.. we'll see!

Great to see another vid on the RT. Missed these for a while. A bit over a year ago you inspired me to buy an RT. I owned a GS but living in NL and commuting all year round, highway, I figured the RT would be a better choice... When in October I totalled my GS in a small accident, I went for the RT. I'm loving it. There are a lot of KZbin vids on the GS, but not so much on the RT related to my style of riding. Inspired by your vids, I started my own channel about touring and commuting the RT in The Netherlands. It's a nice addicting activity. Thanks for the inspiration. Hoping for more of your RT vids :)

Agree with all your comments, especially in regard to reliability and touring capability- most of my 1200RT's kms are clocked up with my partner on the back- she loves the comfort. In regard to tyres, I think Michelin Road 6s and RTs are made for each other- after a few other types I'm on my third set of Road 6s having got 17-18,000km off each set- much better longevity than the other brands and they keep their shape.

Great video. Can agree, have mine (2023) since a month. It is such a fantastic bike. There is no bike with this level of comfort, that you can move around soooo sporty.... I ride it in dynamics only, so good. Although =>>> the price for it brand new: >32k in austria (with everything!). but still no cylinder protection!;-) It is not that big. In reality the RT is the R model with the lowest wheelbase, that's why it handles so well. Also the weight, not so much. The K1600 and the Goldwing are different beasts. The only thing i think with this bike: if you are a tall guy, you probably might feel a little cramped easily. I am small 175, for me very nice. But i think if you are around 190, the ergonomics are not so great (Knee), also the windprotection will then suffer a lot. I guess for tall guys there are better bikes out there.

It was an epic point to point cruiser but the TFT drove me bonkers. Traded it in for an x3 for my wife. Subsequently bought a NT11000 DCT. Great ship arpund ciities but not a patch on the RT re power, deftness in road manners but it doesnt pertain to be a RT. What works a terat is applecar play, no issues with connection and google maps with traffic all there to see and judge. . BMW need to pull their heads of their tails and put apple car play / android into their bikes as their own in house system is imo akin to junk. Rant over.

When the R1300RT arrives, you will have your 1250 for three years. It will undoubtedly have blind spot assist, will likely be a bit slimmer and of course will have some extra horses to play with. It goes without saying this is all speculation but the new model is sure to be tempting nonetheless.

The unfortunate truth about the news is BMW is note doing right by their customers. They are pushing out machines to fast and not doing enough R&D. To unlucky consumer is doing the fine tuning for them. To be far all bike manufacturers are doing this.

Regarding the navigation and the Wi-Fi disconnecting. Depending on if you use Android or Apple, there are phone settings that should pretty much eliminate the Wi-Fi disconnection issues. BMW Motorrad put out a list of phone settings that should be used. Also make sure you enable all the Permissions in the Connected App.

@@NothingToProve I bought a factory refurbished iPhone to be a dedicated Connected app phone for my MY21 RT. Works great and was cheap (b/c it had some dents and scratches). I only keep the app and my music on the phone, and if someone happens to steal it from the 'glove box' during a break, I will not lose any important personal information. Since the 2022 s/w (firmware?) update the app has not dropped the connection. Prior to that I had to reboot the phone on almost every ride.

I bought my 2015 fully eq 21000km for 13000€ in 2021. Normal service with a 40000km major service valve check for 800€ in february in Sweden, seems cheaper in Germany. I did repair left controls for 500€ last year. I will wait for 1300RT to come and see if it is a revolution model. I have 20 years left to ride in best case. Will it be wort 22 to 25 grand to upgrade?

So jealous of the insurance costs. Here in Malta for my nt1100dct I pay €630 a year. The bmw is a lovely bike but for that money, and with a 10” bike they should really be offering apple carplay and android auto. It just works on my honda and I wont buy another tourer bike without it. Unfortunately that only means I can get the at, another nt or the goldwing.

I must say that with my android pixel 5 the connection and navigation app works perfect, with my iphone and the screenlock..... not oke. What you can do to improve it is to make shure that your phone will not switch to free or open wifi networks automatic or want to switch from 4/5G to wifi to so save data, you can turn this off in your phone and the it will work better.

Does BMW offer Apple Carplay or any rumors they will? I might consider the RT when the 1300 comes out provided it has Apple Carplay and the lowering suspension

honestly, i love the look of the motorcycle on the hand its killing what is it about riding. riding is freedom an espace from modernizm to be part of the nature and the most unseen force of them all the wind. when you sit on this machine you are just the tool riding it. Your vision is obsecured by a navigation system and a huge windshield. i do prefer to look at this motorcycle from side thats it. I do prefer a Vespa over it. vespa is the bird bmw is the plane.

Comparing a Vespa to this BMW R1250 RT has to be a joke A Vespa is budget buy for intra-city transport or at most 50km round trip ride. The BMW is for affluent individuals who can appreciate the best of a true touring bike that is easily 10X the range capabilty and more with true performance thrill a Vespa will never have. Where I like to ride my 2022 Versys 1000SE in U.S. there is 150 km of round-trip travel covering mostly open space on boring straight rural roads to get where I want to ride. Often at speeds over 120 kph that make such connections tolerable. Out of curiosity I visited Vespa website and they are marketing the illusion of edgy and cool. Female models wearing high heals and long coats standing on a production line or in a sound chamber next to but not actually riding. Seriously who would fall for such nonsense? Surely, I wish to be so financially constrained that I could somehow buy a Vespa and get back my cool youth😂 The Vespa marketing says it all about the real product which is mostly a nothing burger, commodity scooter with a vintage facade at a premium price. I would surely buy a Honda with DCT before any Vespa scooter cause it is way more smiles for the dollar or Euro.
