Great video, guys. Very informative, and very clear. Three questions, if you don't mind: 1. Are your nymphs weighted (beadheads, for example)? 2. How do you stop the split shot from sliding down the tippet? 3. When you do use beadheads, do you also use a split shot?

Great vid! Very instructive! Question... was your olive pheasant tail a bead head? Also, at the begining when you did have a double fly rig, do you tie your 2nd nymph off the bend of the hook of your 1st? Would love to know your preference for tying on a 2nd fly. Thanks!
@elliotrobbins5117 жыл бұрын
that is something new to me using a 2wt rod and overlining it with 5 wt line why do you use this set up instead of just using 2wt line and keep up the great videos I am new to fly fishing and your videos really help me learn thank you
@chicken_9537 жыл бұрын
Elliot Robbins This fly fishing is confusing! The lower the number in rod weight, the smaller the rod. Tippet, just the opposite!?!? And using two flies can be frustrating to fish with. The two flies get tangled up, snag a lot easier etc.....
@toddh61027 жыл бұрын
Just a comment based on Steve's knot question. I developed a bad habit of changing the plane of my rod from forward stroke to back cast in order to avoid branches, etc. this inevitably puts a knot in my leader by looping over itself. Usually it's between nymphs. If it's 6x Tippett or bigger, I leave it alone bc most trout 14" or smaller won't break it off. I use to waste time changing until legendary flyfisherman Joe Humphrey said don't worry about. He explained why. Yes it may reduce the strength of the line, but not enough. I saw lefty Kreh tie a dropper loop in his leader to swing tandem wet flies, so to your point it's all personal preference. Great instructional video for beginners. Did you shave off the beard?
@living4theoutdoors7 жыл бұрын
Hey Todd, Even though I caught no large fish that day, they are there and I believe a knot may be the difference in landing a fish of a lifetime or not landing that fish. I have been on the loosing end of that and just do my best not to take the chance, but who know, maybe a nick in the line or weak spot. Thanks for the comment and the beard gets shaved in May and is started back up for archery. I once treated it as a buck beard, but had to shave it every year when I shot my buck so I stopped the buck beard thing and it has not been bad luck, I still get a buck, ha ha. Best of luck on the water!

great video, subscribed. do you run any kind of stopper knot by the split shot?
@living4theoutdoors7 жыл бұрын
Steve, I don't run a knot. I just think they weaken the line too much. Some would disagree, but anytime I get a knot in my line I change it out. Best of luck to you on the water.

Great info. When you change nymphs do you change just the bottom one or both?
@living4theoutdoors7 жыл бұрын
John, Sometimes both, but most of my changes are quick and just the bottom nymph. Best of luck and thanks!

I am always also interested in the "hardware." What weight line and what length rod, please? Great video!
@living4theoutdoors7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Big Wayne and It's a 10' 2wt Syndicate with 5wt line and reel. Balanced well with the 10' rod.
@ShortsSupply17 жыл бұрын
Great information!! What type of rod do you use? (Length please)
@living4theoutdoors7 жыл бұрын
Hey Steven, It's a Syndicate 10' 2wt rod. On larger streams I'll also use a 3wt. It's a great rod at an affordable price. You could pay the big money for a nymph rod, but this rod does well and that is why we sell them.
@matteoveneruz90966 жыл бұрын
Lively Legz/Living4theoutdoors I was thinking about getting a 7’ 6” 3 wt for small streaks and brushed in areas, but after watching a lot of the lively legs videos, I might get a 10’ 2 wt and overload it with 3 wt line so that later on if I get a 7’6” 3 wt, I can just switch over the reels. I fish a lot of dry flies and streamers, but also want to get into nymph fishing. Do you think a 10’ rod would do just as well on small streams with dry flies?

You have the best videos on the water. what type of camera are you using? It looks like you are looking at a screen so that you will know what the camera is seeing. With My go pro 5 i can't look at a screen so that i know what the camera is seeing. What brand or model. Also you are on water and rocks so are you using a tripod what brand? why does it not tip over???? this is very important to me as i want to film myself on the water as i am sure others do. thank for all your hard work.
@living4theoutdoors7 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late response. I just saw your comment now. I have lost a few cameras over the years, but I buy them preowned on ebay and they are all Sony HDR CX 130 and 160's. Just a simple camera and yes, you can switch the viewfinder around so you can see where you are in the video and film that way. The tripod is an old Manfrotto. It was give to me by a close friend and it's heavy. I have used a 30 dollar once from walmart and it works ok. I just had to adjust the legs on the tripod for each set up. It's fun and a lot of work. Best of luck to you and I hope this helps. Happy Holidays.

So, your overall leader length is? It's interesting to see that you have very little actual fly line at the end of the fly rod.

How far above the nymph do you put the split shot? Great video as well!
@living4theoutdoors7 жыл бұрын
Hey Logan, If it's a double nymph rig I up the split in between, on a single nymph rig 8 inches works great for me. Best of luck to you on the water.

Great vid. Sorry for the stupid Q, but did you say cider line in your set up section? What is a cider line?
@living4theoutdoors7 жыл бұрын
Ha ha, no, that's my PA twang. I said sighter line. It's a piece of bright line you put into your leader so that your eyes can see it and it makes it easier to see the line move when a fish strikes. Happy Holidays to you!
@matmanx27 жыл бұрын
Haha. Thanks for the reply. BTW, if you google 'cider line' you do not get any hits relating to fishing! :D

matmanx2 look up the reds fly shop video on a euro nymphing rig. They explain the sighter line very well. He actually ties the sighter with a piece of dacron backing.

Thanks for sharing the knowledge! So much good stuff here! One question: when you went to the single nymph set-up did you keep on the split shot? If so, was it still around 10 inches away from your fly? Thanks and tight lines! Joe
@living4theoutdoors7 жыл бұрын
Hey Joseph, Yes I still kept it on and between 8 and 10 works great for me on the single nymph. Thanks and best of luck to you as well,

No hunting videos this year??
@westsidewil7 жыл бұрын
If you ever think about it, can you make a video at some point where you focus on the sighter line so we can see what it looks like when it stops? Thanks.
@westsidewil7 жыл бұрын
I think I saw it at 15:35 in this video. Also, is there a formula (or your best guess) as to how much tippet you put on based on the depth of the water? For instance, 18" of tippet for each 12" of water.
@westsidewil7 жыл бұрын
Also, saw your video on your 'quick leaders'. What weight sighter line and what size tippet rings do you use for your rigs?

So is it best to walk upstream or downstream?
@living4theoutdoors7 жыл бұрын
While nymph fishing and trying to stay below the radar on smaller water we walk upstream and fish.
@IMKINDOFABIGDEAL136 жыл бұрын
Always upstream. Always start your day downstream and hike your way up along the riverbank. This can force you to find some cool spots sometimes that you would have normally over looked before knowing this. Also always fish a hole from the shallow side if possible

Lively Legz/Living4theoutdoors Hey buddy ive just got into fly fishing but ive only fished with a single dry fly, tonight im going out with a friend who says we will be using nymphs but i only have floating leader or normal fishing line, could i use any of those or do i need sinking leader or some other type of leader? Cheers in advance 👍 Tight lines ✌👍from Scotland 🙋
@IMKINDOFABIGDEAL136 жыл бұрын
TheDevilWearsPrada regular tapered monofilament leaders will work fine. You can use a small splitshot about 6 to 8 inches above your nymph if you are having trouble getting it down to the fish
@RGJR027 жыл бұрын
What’s the name of that rod holder?
@living4theoutdoors7 жыл бұрын
Hey Rudy, It's a Syndicate.
@livelife87584 жыл бұрын
And how should I fish em
@RGJR027 жыл бұрын
How do u determine the depth ?
@living4theoutdoors7 жыл бұрын
Most will say the depth of your nymphs below the sighter line should be 1 and 1/2 times the depth of the water and it's a great general rule, but the more you nymph fish you will find out how much line you like out of the water and create your own preferences. The goal is to have your nymphs on the bottom and your sighter line just above the water so you can see it move when the fish strikes your nymphs.
