As a western N.C. resident and fly fisherman of over 50 years, I loved your presentations, explanations and demonstrations. Very precise and to the point. People starting will be well served by your advice. Heck, even longtime anglers slip into bad habits. Sometimes you can repeat something wrongly so many times that “wrong feels right”. Tight lines!

You are hands down the best teacher I have ever come across on KZbin. I’ve learned to hunt, shoot, program, run a business, build CNC machines and write G code off KZbin. Nobody has come close to your level of clarity and precision. I don’t exactly know what you do differently, but you’re very well spoken and I think it goes a long way. I hope you have an incredibly successful time in the fly fishing industry. I would hire you in a second.

Helpful video. Can I suggest zooming out more to show the line on the water during the instruction? Especially in the beginning where you were talking about line tension it would have been nice to see that. Thanks for doing this series!

The Tyler Nelson yes absolutely, thank you for the feedback we really appreciate it. We’ll get the angles dialed in in future videos. Many more on nymphing planned👍🏻

From the other side of the continent, along the Truckee River, nice job. With this quarantine stuff I needed some refreshers and you did a nice job. Imprinted in my brain is Lift-Fold-Follow-Lower the Rod at the End. Thank you very much. If I get to NC (Again) I will set up a day on the river with you.

Great tip, keeping the line under the index finger of your left (non rod hand) hand. Easy to set the hook, and if you use an automatic, you start playing it through your index finger, which also acts as a drag. Good video.

I am predominantly a salt water fly fisherman who is learning more about trout and freshwater on the fly, so I am looking forward to more videos on the subject. I'd love to see a video about rigging a nymph setup from the leader down the how the flies are tied on and everything in between. Keep up the good work!

In northern Il there is not a lot of opportunity to trout fish. so last week when i finally got to a freshly stocked creek. i was beyond aggravated with all the missed hook sets. Now i know what was doing wrong. i was giving way to much slack on the line. This week armed with this new info i think my hook up percentage will go up. thanks!

Great refresher, very helpful for a beginner, getting my feet wet. I did a trout guide in 2005, but things got in the way to where I was unable to keep it up. Well, things have changes and I excited to start this journey. We will be stopping by WildFly in Boone on June 1st, we are spending 5 days up towards Hot Springs. See ya soon

New trout angler, and your newest subscriber here. I’m addicted to the sport and your videos and great! I need a bit of help with my cast. On a regular overhead cast, I make a couple of mistakes. 1) I often “whip” my line and lose my fly. And, 2) I struggle getting the distance I need and my fly line seems to hit the water first on longer case shortening my distance. If you do a casting video, your effortless roll cast in the last video is pretty amazing stuff. Hope to see another video soon.

I was out on the Middle Provo River here in Utah last weekend trying to nymph with a line that had split shot at the end and two tags with flies tied to that line with triple surgeons' knots at 1/2 foot intervals above the split shot. I put a strike indicator on the line at 2x water depth. First of all, I found that weighted setup really hard to cast. Secondly, those tags with the flies on them got tangled with the rest of the line very easily. Maybe they were too long. Don't know. Wasn't a good experience.

You are certainly helping me out with my fly game. I've been fly fishing for a few years but started getting more serious this year and really honing my skills and your channel has been extremely helpful. This is an 'off the hook' question though, what brand of waders are you wearing? I'm a large framed fella and am in need of a roomy pair of waders but I'm having one helluva a hard time finding them. Thank you in advance!

Great reminder on the line between the index finger and handle. I don’t always do that and as he states you end fumbling for it on a hook up. I’ve lost several fish that way.

I would love to see more on the importance of indicators and whether you must have one or whether you can use a large dry fly instead.

IMO either one will work, but an indicator allows you to easily adjust for depth where a dry dropper doesn’t.

I believe that Euro nymphing really has made the method of using indicators and fusing with mending line almost obsolete. It just a better and much more productive way of finding and catching fish. In addition,it a great way for beginners to really take hold of the sport.

@fenrirunshackled43194 жыл бұрын
One criticism: Mending isn't only I utting your line upstream of the indicator. If you're fishing the close side of a seam the water between you and your indicator will often be slower than your indicator is moving, because of this you need to put your slack line downstream of the indicator for the best drift.
@midgemaniaflyfishing4 жыл бұрын

Thanks for the demo Patrick. Only thing I would suggest is to have your cameraman film what you're doing more as you're explaining it. He started to do this more toward the later portion of the segment, but so long as we can hear your instruction... I'd rather see you demonstrating what you're teaching instead of just watching you talk (not that you're ugly or anything :D)
