I agree and disagree. 1st off I completely agree that society seems be unraving, witness the many young people who would rather steal and rob rather than work. Then we see so many homeless in our cities that I never once saw when I grew up in the 60's. Part of it is economic but a lot of it is due to drug addiction and mental illness. My wife and I are comfortable retired boomers but we worked our whole lives living below our means and now we can finally enjoy ourselves. KZbin might be a good side hustle but for most creators, it's not going to pay the bills.

You had some good points but I’d say the younger generations don’t want to work . Won’t push through the struggle like past generations. Wake up in your late 20’s in a dead end job is on you , not anyone else. Plenty of good jobs for those willing to work hard for it. It’s just easier to complain about your “hard” situation.

I have 2 kids in their mid to late 20's and agree that the average wage earner today cannot afford housing, transportation, good food, etc. As a cusp boomer myself(born in 1961), we were just trying to do the best we could in that era. Just like generations that came before us. We weren't trying to destroy the future for the next generations. Try growing up in the great depression like my grandparents did, they could have easily blamed the people of the roaring 20's for their plight, but they didn't they pushed on and had backbones. These things run in cycles. The pendulum will swing back and there will be a correction.

I'm a Baby Boomer born in 62, graduated high school into an economy that offered very few well paying jobs in 1981. I overcame Foreclosures, drug addiction and homelessness. I lived in a pick up truck w/shell for about 5 years (we were not called "Nomads" back then) I eventually went to trade school, got a skill and was making 6 figures by the mid 90s. Point is I RESENT THE BLAME that is put on my generation by others!! Life Sucks Sometimes but you keep plowing ahead. Blaming others is not going to solve anything. And If you want change, maybe get a skill and a job going forward instead of living in the desert doing very little to change your situation.

Building a future starts with the individual. You can build yourself by experience and education. My generation didn't believe in borrowing money. The interest rates were high and if your smart you would save for your needs and only purchase your wants if they were affordable. Most females went into the work force because inflation required more money than the average man could earn to be middle class. The wants were borrowed money purchases, once they were in debt far enough, they were trapped. If you monitor inflation you will find that wages don't keep up taxes or inflation. The day is coming that social programs run by the government will be the law and provider for the people of this fine nation. In the last 3 years the retired boomers have lost 30% + in buying power, in other words they can kiss 30% of their nest egg good by forever.

Dude, When I was 25 ( in 1970 ) I was working on the railroad catching runs when the older guys took a day off. The minimum wage at that time was 2.25 / hour maybe ). I thought I was doing good working 12 hours away from home and making 50 bucks. I lived in a boarding houses and cheap hotels most of the time. I usually only had 10 bucks for food on most overnight trips. Born in the early fifties I think I’m a boomer and feel lucky to still be above the ground. And you know I was 70 when I clocked out the last time. And in no way a rich man.

I'm not sure I said in any video Robert, that some boomers didn't have it rough. I just stated that the wages were great, houses were cheap and the food was real. And now, all these decades later with the boomers having been in charge. The food is poison, houses are out of reach for youngins, and the cost of living is ridiculous. They managed to turn the US into 3rd world in one generation. And STILL in power making it worse while sucking out any last bits of freedom and quality before they go. Leaving rot and decay in their path. I'll give them this though, they did make some good movies.

Personally I don't blame any generation. I blame credit.when people started using credit to get instant gratification for anything they wanted it caused a debt / interest based economy =unstable economy interest is paid to financial institutions controlled by people who have little interest in making thier communities stronger I can see credit for reasonable houses or transportation. Buying a house big enough for a family of six when all you need is a 2 bedroom is senseless. And if your spending 100000$ for a car or pickup that is not essential to your job is stupid live within your means save up your money and pay cash whenever you can

Some accountability from what I've seen is a very smug generation that thinks they should have pride in something that wasn't created by them. My grandfathers generation built a great economy, the great 50's and actually stayed in their marriages. Boomer generation squandered E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G they could get their hands on and continue to destroy everything they touch. While at the same time poking at younger generations with tales of how hard they worked (laughing, they got 10x more for even less work, one income could pay for a family and they more than likely had both parents in the household when they were growing up. What did they give their kids? Single parent homes and divorce. The list goes on). I want to see the delusional smug, and the "i worked so hard" comments suggesting generation X didn't have to work twice as hard. And can't keep a family together after boomers ruined the family unit as well. I just want the smug pride to take a turn. Then I'll start in on my generation and even younger. But most of ya'll just absolutely REFUSE to admit ANY fault. Just want to boast about your success. :-)

One of the best books I've read in a long time because I too am fascinated by generational differences and the book really digs deep on what the potential causes are of these differences and how that actually creates this cycle over time. I didn’t blame any prior generations or the next, my successes and failures are all my responsibility. I chose to get an education and go to work, even had two jobs for a couple of years to accomplish my goals. Today, I am responsible for myself and proud of what I have accomplished, far too many people spend a lot of time whining and complaining and do not invest on themselves simply because finding a direction to point the finger at is easier. The company I work for hires 150-175 people a week so whomever doesn’t have a job is because they do not want to work unless they have a LEGITIMATE medical condition that prevents them to do so.

By the time they are in their 20's they are totally UN prepared to start working to actually earn what it is they want, then they complain that they can't afford anything. You're giving me the typical boomer response I mentioned in the video. While I agree with some of what you said, that they're lazy and entitled. I covered a reason why young adults aren't trying to do much. The fact is, they have to work 10x harder to get the same your generation did when you were starting out. And ownership, which I went over in the video. A lot, feel like they're trying to cut down an oak tree with a butter knife. Look at the buying power of the dollar now compared. Add the cost of living, and the price of everything. Then add the ownership factor. What you did, is ignorantly tried to correct without knowing the market whatsoever. Your response is very typical. Don't care to study, just say "work harder". While you came from a time where one blue collared job could pay for a family. And now, barely two normal incomes can pay for one. These kids can't afford families haha are you kidding? Especially on picking berries. You literally have no idea what you're talking about. But just had to add in a cold, tough response. The newer generations have a lot of issues. But why don't you try on some accountability. Who raised em? Anyways, have a good day. Take care.

Being one of the 1st Baby Boomers to be born after WWII I grew up in a time when America was being told to go forth and multiply. My parents bought their first home out of town by 2 1/2 miles so my sister and I were raised as country kids but my parents wanted us to get a decent education so my parents went to court each year for the first 8 grades to allow us to go to city schools which meant we rode a school bus every day of school for 12 years. My parents bought a home on 5 acres in 1947 for $5000.00 and my father on a salary of less than $350.00 a month managed to have the property paid for in 5 years. The school system was less than great from the late 40's until now. We were taught things that never come into play in real life and the things we were taught only sometimes are beneficial in the real world. I feel like today at age 78 what needs to be taught in school is how to read, write, basic math, some science, and lots of history about what has worked and what has failed over and over again. Teach junior high through high school how money works and the value of it. When I graduated high school my parents had a checking account and the only thing I understood about it was that my mother could write money when ever she wanted to buy something. How to balance a checkbook was learned by the school of hard knocks a few years later in life when I decided to get a checking account of my own. The fact that the bank was going to just take out bank fees from my money was an unknown until it happened. I thought I had money in the account and I could just do like my mother and write money when I needed it. I learned that overdraft fees were something to have to deal with. The second time around I married a woman much smarter than myself and she was raised very poor and had figured out the value of money and how to save it. By poor I mean she lived in a house with out running water so it was water from a well out back and an outhouse for a bathroom. A bath was taken in a washtub with water either heated by the sun in the summer or heated on a gas stove in the colder parts of the year. Her father was only around until she turned 7 and from then on she was lucky to see him once or twice a year. He did not pay any child support for her or her sister. He died when she was 13 and her mother was able to draw veteran and Social Security benefits from him after he died and they moved into a small town when she was 15 and she had running water and an indoor bathroom for the first time that she could remember. Her mother got pissed off about something when she was 16 and hit her with an iron pipe and she left and went to live with her grandmother for the last two years of high school. She got her first job right out of high school and was also trying to go to college and pay her own way. After two years she was not able to keep up with school and work and her doctor told her that you have to either stop working or stop going to college and she told him if she wanted to eat and live she would have to quit school. At 20 years old she moved to a large city and went to work and also enrolled in Banking and Business school. While in Banking school she met her first husband that was also going to the same school for an accounting course. After she graduated she went to work as an long distance phone operator and was still dating her first husband until at age 21 she got married and the first six month were beyond anything she could imagine. He was earning $50K a year in 1968 and they lived in an apartment with a maid that came in 3 times a week to help keep the place clean and changed sheets on the bed do the laundry and so forth. You get the picture. Seven months in her new husband started to show his rear self and using her for a punching bag. Over the next two months he beat her three times, once knocking her into a wall so hard she could not move for over two hours, another beating he broke her front tooth and broke three ribs. At the end of the eighth month she packed up and left him while he was at work and filed for a divorce. It took over six months for the papers to be served on him because his buddies would lie and tell the officer trying to serve him that he was not there that day. He managed to get a divorce and was living in a town 75 miles away from him and he had a restraining order to not be in the same town she was in or if she saw him he could be put in jail. Did I mention that he was an ex boxer in the navy and oh yes 17 years older than her. She stayed single for the next seven years and my sister introduced us the year before and we dated for six months and I ask her to marry me. I am one year older than her. We were married 8 months later and that was 46 years ago. Since she wanted nothing from her first husband but OUT, she got $100.00 a month for one year as alimony. We started from pretty much nothing. She was renting an apartment and I was renting a duplex but we lived 175 miles apart and only were able to see each other on the weekends. I drove that 175 miles every weekend except two that I had to work overtime at my job and could not get out of it for 13 months before we were married in my parents home in front of the fireplace in a very simple no frills wedding. She had no children and I never wanted any so we decided before we got married I would have a vasectomy so she would not have to take birth control pills and take a chance they might not work. I decided after serving 3 years in the United States Marine Corps that what was happening to the world was not likely to get any better. From what I could tell this country was going to get into some kind of a war every generation or less. After WWI came WWII and then in the 50's Korea then in the 60's Vietnam. By 1978 when we got married I knew if history told me anything we would be getting into another war somewhere soon. Well much to my surprise Desert Storm in 1991 took a little longer than I thought but it happened none the less and it seems we will be in some kind of a mess for at least the rest of my life. Oh hell this is going on forever and nobody really cares anyway so I will just shut the hell up. Long story short because of my wife's handling of our money I was able to retire at 59 1/2 years old and until taxes and insurance take our ability to pay the bills I plan to stay that way. VOTE TRUMP and maybe life will be able to continue for a while longer.

Even when we are miles separated, understanding we have similarities gives me hope, feeling less alone in this collapsing world. Another post GenX thing I will never agree with, is the concept that individuals have "their truth." It is my belief, and I have not been convinced otherwise, there is, and can only be 1 truth! That is THE TRUTH. I think, some people never learned the definition of the word "perspectuve" or "opinion". I hope you will consider doing more of these types of vlogs Mike. I know for certain I am not the only one who enjoys them.

100% right! No such thing as "my truth". There's only true and false. And based on some of the conversations I've already had today because of this video. That's why I don't usually do these. The stupidity level is just too high. We really are doomed. Well, Christians aren't! But there's folks out there that think someone can come into office and magically fix everything. What needs to be fixed is the morality of this country first. More wealth, won't fix a darn thing. It will continue to get worse and worse. :-)

I really think the problem has to do with the amount of information that is available and how easy it is to access it. In the past, scams were not very common, and technology was not available to help these people scam and take advantage of others. Now, a person can get so much information in a few minutes, and they can see the success of others taking advantage of others so they can easily replicate it themselves. Also, this is a big ALSO. The large corporations have infiltrated the government and media, and they are way more powerful than the government! They make the rules to help themselves so they can grow and be more powerful! I want to go off grid just like you did, and I want to live a life much more free, but I have a family to support and children to prepare for this new and ugly country and world. My current plan is to set them up for their future but at the same time prepare for the inevitable and give them a safe haven when everything turns ugly! Mike, keep making these awesome videos! I hope to be able to meet in person someday when my wife and I can become nomads. Maybe we could meet up at quartzsite in a few years when we get mobile!

You know the most memorable movie scene I saw that in case of a major event was the scene on Independence day. After Will had beat up the Alien and he was walking and all of a sudden he saw all the vechiles and campers just fill up the area. That is going to be the ones to pretty much survive. It's is the question of letting what you know go. How can the average person even survive with as high as things are. The world is in a crisis. I do not blame anyone who is in survival mode. The question is how many things that you own that is fluff. You don't touch it , you don't use it. You just have it.

I think we are splitting in two. Not everyone is blind and some of us love to paint beautiful things. We also love to raise kids with a purpose. We just have bigger families with many generations living together like it use to be. Some of us are stepping back into a way of life that is best for us not moving forward into 15 min cities with bottles in our mouths. by the way, I am at the very beginning of the GenX group.

Lot to unpack and it is all your opinion, your interpretation. I agree with some of what you say and disagree with others. One thing I have real disagreement with is your generalization of Boomers. Any form of generalization is bad. Boomers technically born between 1946-1964. How in the hell can 18 years of birth throughout the entire country, east coast to west, north to south, urban to rural, rich to poor, European to native born, black and white (and every shade in between), be labeled and categorized the same? That’s ridiculous. It’s why any form of generalizing is foolish. Personally, I am a white male, born into a lower middle income family in 1956, in Southern California. I started working at 15. I am a liberal, because I was taught by my mother, that we are ALL equal, not to judge others or to believe one is better or lesser than the other. That belief system led me to register as a Democrat because the other party has historically ALWAYS been opposed to equal rights, based on color and gender. The better part of my education has been self-taught mixed with public schooling and a year+ of community college. I left SoCal at 22 and moved to the mountains of the eastern Sierra because I became disenchanted with the over populated, fast pace of city life. I have huge issue with hypocritical Christians. What a joke! Following a traditional life of marriage , mortgage, two children, ended in divorce. For the past 6-7 years, I have been living the ‘nomad’ life in a trailer on public lands split between forest and desert. I survive off social security. I say all this to make the point that generalizing is always foolish. As, I already stated, there is a lot to unpack of your opinions but, I’ll leave it with the mistake to generalize. We are all similar and different. Such is life. I give another example of stupid, stupid generalizing: California is a HUGE state with as much social diversity as geographical. Everywhere in California is NOT Los Angeles/Hollywood. And yet out-of-state people continue to make that generalization. The same good Christians who generalize about people of color. Haha bunch of hypocrites hedging their bet in hopes of getting through the pearly gates. Jesus sees through them..,generalizing AKA racism.
@LivingFree

You cannot have reasonable conversation without generalizations. Or the conversation is always in a loop. For instance, I can say women (as a generalization) prefer men who are taller then them. The person who hates generalization would come in and make the foolish statement "not all women". Which completely stops the conversation in all aspects. If it's true though that even 60% of women prefer men who are taller than them, why base a conversation off a minority? You can say that some rivers in the world have 5 different colored waters flowing down it. Does that make the majority true? Are all rivers now rainbows? If we are talking about the Mississippi, what added value would it be to insert the rainbow colored river? Obviously this could be explained better. But not using generalizations is foolish. Take care.

What common sense youtubers do, is just present facts. And let people decide on their own. However, that's not my current position on youtube. I generally make Off Grid content. But if the views continue to be as low as they have been, I'll move to something more appealing that will pull people in. I'm simply not doing this for my health, it's a waste of energy to keep doing something people don't want to watch. I keep asking for shares, likes, and support. But it generally goes in one ear and right out the other. So it'll push me to make different content! Something people will appreciate more if that makes sense. :-)
