I left Phoenix after 5 years and recently moved to Tucson. I love Tucson. I love being near the mountains. It's a beautiful retro city with a slower pace of life. Very affordable. I finally saw a Javalina near Dominoes pizza. It was so cute!!!

Quite the opposite for me. I am trying to get back to the phoenix area, I HATE Tucson, it's dead dead dead. It simply makes the drive to good places an extra 2 hours each way. You can't go anywhere from Tucson without going back to Phoenix to get there...and there's nothing in tucson to see other than slums. It's only saving grace is a slightly lower cost of living, and that's starting to go away.

I made a trip to Arizona this summer and went back and forth between Phoenix and Tucson a few times. My observation is Tucson always had clear blue sky while Phoenix always had a hazy sky. The temperature in Tucson was noticeably lower. One afternoon, I was eating lunch outside in Tucson, drove to Phoenix right after, got out of the car, o.m.g... no way I would sit outside to eat lunch there.

Grew up in Tucson, from mid 1950's to 1969. Frequently went to Phoenix for events, whatever. Overall, Tucson has the most appeal for me; the local music scene, Artists like DeGrazia, the fabulous architecture, friends and family, and the overall culture which defines me as a person. A lot of allegations lacking any basis in truth. People earn what their skill set will maximize . A highly paid rocket engineer makes great money in tucson. If you have the right skill set I’d argue you live better in tucson than Phoenix as you’ll have less competition in tucson than Phoenix. Of course if you are low skilled, not someone aggressive in advancing your career then yes you will scrape by but that’s the same in any city whether Phoenix, tucson or any metropolitan city.

I took that into consideration before I commented. Obviously, it doesn't apply to each employment opportunity or person. Still, I've lived and worked in both places for 49 years before retirement 2 years ago. I know the Phoenix market pays better and Tucson is nicer if bucks are no object. Just like I said.

I am a Tucson resident but work periodically in Phoenix and agree with you 100% on your comparisons. Tucson, being close to the border, is where many go for dental, medical care and meds, too. Also, Tucson seems greener and more attractive even in populated areas which is nice. It has a lot of great urban birding spots, also.

Tucsonan here. Pretty accurate overall. I'd say the comments about age demographics are overstated. Also, in terms of water scarcity, Tucson's aquifers are in better health than most other parts of Arizona, and improving, but now we're having issues with wells poisoned by the air force base. I would also say that lack of highway infrastructure is less of an issue because Tucson is (somewhat) less sprawled than Phoenix.

Reasons to move to (or from) Phoenix: 1) 100 degrees in the summer just feels too cold. 2) Political zaniness is actually something the kids will enjoy learning. 3) You won't feel out of place as every house on the block looks exactly the same. 4) You need a car to cross the street. 5) Has a great Light Rail that also serves as low-income housing. Reasons to move to (or from) Tucson: 1) Phoenix Envy... Size does matter. 2) Old Pueblo isn't just a nickname; it's a selling point. 3) The planned Crosstown freeway that never is and never will be. 4) Convenient hourly shuttle service to Phoenix Sky Harbor because no one from Tucson flies out of Tucson. 5) Desert Landscaping... you'll never have to worry about mowing your cactus.

I would say you nailed it except the water issue. Both cities will eventually have problems with drought and CAP restrictions; however, Tucson years ago went more Xeriscape with its landscaping and built a water reservoir system albeit it is not open lakes. I would say Phoenix is more at risk for water simply because they consume more inefficiently and its hard to shift behavior for a larger city. Hope this helps.
@frankgreco
@frankgreco 2 жыл бұрын
There is no escaping the water issue. You can delay it and it probably won't be really nasty over the next few decades (and in many of our lifetimes), but unless there is a weather anomaly with huge amounts of rain or snow... from a climate trend pov, it's essentially inevitable.

I owned a home there for ten years and never had a tarantula or a scorpion... The only dangerous spider I ever found was a black widow by my pool right after I had a load of firewood delivered, which Im pretty sure was the culprit for that. Personally I was driving through the desert in New Mexico and saw three tarantulas moseying across the road in a deserted brushy area, which makes me assume that area was absolutely infested with them to see three in such close proximity. You couldn't pay me a million dollars to walk through those fields. So I get your fear, it's just not true of Tucson.

I was born in Tucson and lived there 30 out of my 60+ years, I traveled a lot growing up but always came back to Tucson for the reasons you mentioned. The part about the universities was spot on except you left out the bitter rivalry between the basketball teams. ASU has always been known as a party school U of A was founded in 1885 and ASU 1945. Also one very important thing you missed, air quality, since AZ has developed so much they've changed the weather patterns, we know as Monsoon Seasons down there, It doesn't rain like clock work the way it did before and cleanse the air so Pheonix's air quality is not as good as Tucsons. But a warning to anyone thinking of moving to AZ for health reasons, I had to leave Tucson because I have Lupus with COPD and could no longer breath, I moved to Seattle and I'm now off oxygen. I love it here but I miss my Tucson sunsets and sunrises those also beat Pheonix's hands down.

@@BaronSaturday66 Hi right back at ya, TBH Phoenix does have better job opportunities depending on what field you’re in, the cost of living is higher also. But it is truly hotter than hell in that valley anymore, it will not dip below 100 even at night for 4 months straight. I don’t know how you are sociopolitically but Tucson is far more liberal than Phoenix. There’s a lot more theater, concerts and “city life” in Phoenix, but if you’re into out doors hiking, bike riding Tucson is definitely your choice. I never liked Phoenix but some people love it. The crimes about the same in both, theft and stuff like that. Actually I finally convinced my 90 year old mom who still lives in Tucson to move up here, we’re both moving down to Vancouver WA, I can’t afford to live up here anymore and my mom wants to ride river boats and trains through the mountains the last years of her life so up here’s perfect. I personally think Tucson is the most livable and much prettier. They have something like the Seattle freeze down there, but it’s you make it through a summer down here then we’ll become friends, instead of the winter. Good luck in wherever you choose, I really miss my desert but I just can’t breathe down there anymore. If you have any further questions don’t hesitate ☮️

@Cheri Noelke Thank you. I really appreciate the advice. I have lived in or near big cities most of my life. Seattle is one of the smaller ones, and it may be what I'm used to now. Phoenix is probably more sensible but I may have to invest in a gas mask. Tucson is just a bit too small and limited as far as jobs. I'm still researching. I live in downtown Seattle now and I'm just about done with it. It's very beautiful, but miserable.

@@BaronSaturday66 If you think Phoenix is best look into Tempe, Glendale or Scottsdale these are subs but still city like if you have a family. Single go for it and hit downtown, I’ve heard they’re really cleaning it up so maybe you can get in on something just about to boom. You will absolutely flip with the sunsets and sunrises, they’re down right spiritual 😁

@Cheri Noelke I've got my eye on Scottsdale... not bad. Tempe is a bit too youthful for me. Although I did consider ASU back in the 20th century. I chose UT Austin instead. Tucson seems more easy going and better for cycling, which I do like.

Native of tucson, the monsoon is far more active in tucson which is why are dew points and humidity is much higher than in Phoenix, we obviously get more rain which is why on a wet monsoon ragweed, bermuda grass, chilean mesquites grows 2-4 feet tall in so many yards, curbs, and sidewalks in tucson dirty littered unkempt streets, neighborhoods throughout tucson, city government that doesn't care or property owners who don't care native this sad city. Read "Tucson's Shortage of Capital", in the Arizona Daily Independent a excellent analysis of why tucson is in the condition it's in.

Visited my family in Tucson for 3 weeks only (first time in the US from Guam) in June last year! Def took some time to adjust to dry heat (my nose bled and had to sleep with a humidifier) lmao! Anyways, I found Tucson to be really simple and slow paced, perfect for my elderly parents. However, I think I will very much prefer Phoenix and plan to move there late 2023 for better job opportunities in the marketing/advertising industry (I found that they pay higher for my field in Phoenix compared to Tucson) and I plan to start a family there ☺️ Also to be closer to my family instead of being separated by an ocean and a 22 hour plane ride 🥴. I love Guam and I will miss the beautiful islands’ food, culture, constant weather and the ocean, but home is wherever my family is and I’ll make it in Arizona. Besides, gotta step out of my comfort zone.

I find your story intriguing because as an Air Force brat growing up, I lived in both Guam and Phoenix, Andersen AFB and Williams AFB( now Mesa Gateway Airport and ASU East), respectively. We lived in Arizona first and then moved to the island of Guam when I was 8 years-old. What a contrast in terms of climate and culture! Went from hot dry desert to tropical island with typhoons! I did enjoy Guam but being from the states I missed being on a larger landmass and got island fever. Many military brats did. But those are some years I’ll never forget and I long to go back there but tickets are not cheap! And not a quick flight either, like you said! Anyway, good luck to you in your move and being close to family is always a blessing and makes life easier in many ways.

Tucson needs a better art district and artist support. I think that’s the only thing I would like to see. Artist lofts that invite more and more artists to move and pick Tucson as a residency. Musicians, photographers, designers, painters etc. we have the room for creativity here but very little people pushing and supporting it.

If they had that high-speed train I'd work in Phoenix and live in Tucson. Places to live in Tucson: most of the East side, Catalina Foothills, Oro Valley, Sahuarita, Vail Places to live in Phoenix: Cave Creek, Gilbert, Chandler Surface street traffic in Tucson is worse than most of Phoenix due to the lack of freeways. Tucson does vote more blue but I wouldn't say it's more progressive than Phoenix. Phoenix actually votes in favor of updating their infrastructure, freeways, light-rail, etc. (They really need to up their bicycle infrastructure). Also most of the area in Phoenix seems to favor annexation bringing more money into the area as 90% of the metro population in Maricopa county is incorporated as opposed to 55% in Pima county. Tucson votes no on most infrastructure projects and constantly fights annexation.
