Fabric softener is nasty. Even the liquid kind is not good, over time it does leave a grimy film in the washer. And the fragrances in the fabric softeners, are often neurotoxic. Just use white vinegar for a rinse.

I notice that the examples are front load washers. Does the advice hold true for top load washers too? Also thanks for the advice about water temp. We do live in south Florida and our water comes out hot first lol. No worries on water being too cold.

Yes it does. He did make a distinction on some things like top load having more trouble with big comforters but that you shouldn't really wash them in either at home because they are too heavy with the water.

I stopped using liquid detergent in my front loader and the pods because it always stunk even though I would clean the rim of my front loader. I always left the door open too until it dried. It was gross so I now only use the powdered detergent. In my dishwasher I use the pods but I don't use the finish rinse agent I use white vinegar instead. I just put it in my machine like you do the finish.

My 2 cents as a property manager.... running quilts and comforters absolutely breaks the top load washing machines as well as dryers. Most of our rentals have above range microhoods and knock on wood no obvious issues with that, however. Great video! I have such a hard time using less detergent since it just feels wrong and like my clothes won't get clean.

I enjoyed this video...learned a lot! Thanks! My washer and dryer are 32 years old! I'm afraid to get new ones because all I read in reviews is that the H.E. washers don't get clothes clean and that each load takes forever. What's the most popular washer these days?

Buy a SpeedQueen without all the bells and whistles. Best washer I've ever owned - and I've owned several. It's a workhorse and yes, it will fill up with water - not throw a cup of water in there - it fills up.

I just had a repairman out to work on my dryer. The sensor setting was not working. It turns out the fabric softener sheets built up on the 2 sensors inside the barrel by the door. He lightly sanded the sensors, cleaning off the buildup of fabric softener, and the setting worked. ❤

Thanks for sharing. Per my washing machine manual, I do run an empty load with 1 cup of bleach & hot water after 30 loads. After watching this video, I'm glad I do it. I'd forgotten about Amway products. I had to use Amway detergent when my daughter was small because of her sensitive skin. That was per the pediatrician's suggestion, but my Grandmother believed in Amway products...so we did too.

Great info. One tip I can offer regarding king sized comforters. I use two queen sized comforters vs on king sized comforter. This is what many people do in Europe because they don’t have large washing machines at home. This works out well for me because queen sizes don’t damage the bearings of the washing machine, plus I am a comforter thief during the night, so my husband likes the idea of having his own.

In early 70’s we used Amway products, loved them. My washer gets cleaned weekly, by washing my whites with 1/4 cup bleach and warm water plus the heavy duty cycle. Also when all laundry completed I leave lid open to air dry, I cannot see wasting my money on products to add perfume. Great video Tawra.

I use a little bit of liquid laundry detergent (machine set to "less" and I don't see suds in there but I will start measuring manually so it goes farther), but I also toss in some of the dry powder oxyclean laundry additive. And if I'm washing towels, I also toss in some borax. I know that's a lot of stuff, but I get my clothes filthy, and it works for me. I also always do the pre-rinse cycle and an extra rinse. I love my new GE extra capacity front loading washer, and the corresponding dryer. Soooo nice, after dealing with top loading washers that did a crap job for all my life.

I feel vindicated. I have a relatively new Speed Queen, and my son insists that clothes can be washed on the eco wash on cold. I said, well maybe you don't get very sweaty and dirty. I'm going to wash mine on regular and warm. I make use of the soak cycle too, because all I could get was their new style drum, which I don't think agitates enough. The soak gets the clothes completely soaked through and the detergent mixed through, I think. Anyway, I will be sharing that little tidbit about detergents and cold water.

@@diana6842 I am glad I got my hands on a set, but I would have preferred the classic agitator. Like I said, I ha e worked around it by using the soak cycle.
