Excellent review of an excellent product! I own 2 of these filters for backpacking and both have worked flawlessly from Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore to Isle Royale National Park to, most recently, the Manistee River Trail Loop. Lightweight and high volume! Ben, I too have gone to just using a cheap water bottle for backpacking. Very lightweight and easy to store. I take a Platypus collapsible liter bottle as a back up on the trail and a 2 liter bladder for in camp. Awesome review!

Ben, Nice video. I own their pocket filters, while I have yet to use it. From video reviews on it, they suggest you rest the bottom of the filter on the ground or a rock, which makes it easier to pump, and that you make sure you don't touch the clean water hose to the dirty water hose. So placing the clean water hose back in the clean zip bag before handling dirty hose. Keep up the great video reviews...Abe Azar

I went to the Hiker Pro from an MSR MiniWorks. It was a HUGE upgrade, in terms of speed and ease of use. Hiker Pro is an killer filter. But I've since gone to the BeFree and like that even better. Flow rate is a little better and easier to clean filter, and a simpler design. I also love that I can fill up a packable seeker bladder and filter while sitting at camp. But you definitely won't go wrong with the Hiker Pro for sure. Great review!

The initial high price is okay for the Hiker's Katadyn Pro Filter I don't mind paying that price, BUT the Katadyn Hiker Pro Replacement Cartridge is way too expensive. It's about the price of what I originally paid for the whole Katadyn Unit. What the heck is that all about? I think the replacement filter cost is what SUCKS!

I really like my Katadyn Pro. I use it a lot. For questionable water you can add an Aquamira tablet to the bottle. That being said, where I hike and explore I could likely drink straight from the rivers and creeks without any problems. That being said, I still use the Katadyn Hiker Pro to filter all my water. Nobody wants Giardia when exploring the outdoors on this beautiful planet.

In my mind, this should have been a comparison between the Hiker Pro & MSR Miniworks instead of the Guardian. I like that the HikerPro is 5 oz lighter than the MSR Miniworks & $20.00 less in price. They are both excellent products; it almost comes down to personal preference. Customer Service & parts replacements are superb with both MSR & Katadyn.

Ben I'm not sure if it still is this way but you use to be able to use the Hiker Pro replacement filter in the Hiker. Back when the price difference was $20-30 you it was economical to use the stock Hiker filter until it was time to replace the cartridge and pop the Pro filter in the standard mode for an instant upgrade. Of course this was also when Pur owned this product line. I'm not sure how much Katadyn has changed the design since then.

Ben if you pair that with say a sawyer filter you could have some very darn clean water. My opinion, but would be neat to see you toss a video doing that, if at all possible find the nastiest dirtyest mucky water source you can to test a combination of Sawyer Mini with the Katadyn Hiker pro.

4:53 You do not connect the float to the outlet hose!! That's why it's in a separate plastic bag because you do not want to contaminate the outlet hose with the water body or inlet hose. Crikey!!!!

@@livingsurvival Obviously! You clearly say, while talking about the outlet hose, "...reach down into a river, lake or stream, throw this, throw the float down there..." As the recepticle will almost always be near the pump, it's the inlet hose which we need to be a decent length. But you're describing the outlet hose as a decent length in conjunction with talking about throwing the float (inlet). Maybe you knew what you meant to say, but to me, it didn't come across that way. Still, thanks for the vid

You got very lucky my friend. I appreciate your videos (I bought a Paria tarp at your suggestion), but this video is misleading to viewers. Most people without an Env. Science background don't know the difference between algae and 'blue-green' algae, AKA cyanobacteria, which only appears in extremely brackish, oxygen depleted water. The anatoxins produced by cyanobacteria are not filtered out by the Hiker Pro, or any other hiker filter -- not even the MSR Guardian; activated charcoal will only remove anatoxin to a very small degree. Generally the Health Department will put up signs as a result of water quality testing, before any visible algal blooms take hold and before anatoxin levels are sufficient to cause significant human health problems. With a sufficient amount of ingested anatoxin your water will still come out clean and clear tasting great... but hours later you will require hospitalization or you'll die. So honestly I think this video is problematic.
@livingsurvival

You can get sick from any water yet for the most part even without a filter at least here in Michigan chances are rare. I’ve swallowed lake water my entire life without a problem. I could understand if you were drinking gallons of it daily. I also don’t seem to be able to find one documented human death from blue algae toxin in water.
