I know you showed Ch 7 (FRS) but isn't it illegal to use a radio with a removable antenna on FRS? Midland says this s GMRS only radio and does NOT cover FRS. Your video showed the channel jump from CH 7 to 15. The make of a radio does not affect whom you can contact.

+wjf213 that is one of the reasons frs/gmrs was developed to give small groups a way to communicate without the expense or licensing that ham radio require.

+wjf213 Both marine vhf and gmrs uhf are mostly line of site, and have similar performance. GMRS can use a repeater, or a parrot on channels 15-22, so you can reach a few hundred square miles on just a few watts.

The Midland MXT100 is a nice idea for 'mobile' short distance comms, beats a hand held inside a metal shell (the car). But lets stick to the TRUTH of what this radio CAN do. (GMRS and FRS are not interchangable terms, they're DIFFERENT frequencies with different LEGAL compliances) This product DOES NOT communicate on FRS channels. Because the antenna is removable and the power is higher then FRS, it doesn't qualify with FRS legal compliance; hence why its limited to GMRS frequencies (ch 1-7, 15-22). It will communcate to other radios that have GMRS channels, which is pretty much MOST of the GMRS/FRS 'walkie talkies'. But anyone that has the FRS only radios or attempts to use FRS channels to reach this product, can not communicate with this product (cant' say I've even seen anyone selling the FRS only radios, for years now). NO idea why you KEEP saying through this video that it will communicate to FRS. Nor why you keep talking about FRS repeatedly. It has nothing to do with this product. And the video is about A product, not the availible radio services one can use. You might as well be telling people they can buy a CB radio and contact HAM's on 10 meters (which you CANT do on CB radios that are operated LEGALLY in the US or Canada).

Other than the ability to communicate with other FRS radios, how is this radio better than a regular CB radio? CB radios are more powerful and have more channels AND are less expensive. I would just go with CB for my mobile comms.

@livingsurvival8 жыл бұрын

@stoobers18 жыл бұрын
+chuckv5150 CB's don't have privacy codes, vibrate (handheld), compactness, power efficiency, etc. If you use one in your car with children present, you can't monitor anything without swearing and racist tirades. On the gmrs, you can cut all this out and just deal with your communication pool. CBs are not more powerful (legally). On channels 15-22, you have repeater access and a power limit of 25 watts mobile, and 50 watts stationary, which crush cbs. gmrs also doesn't have issues with skip.
@ucitymetalhead8 жыл бұрын
+Living Survival maybe but I swear it had two way communication. But it's been a while since I seen it so who knows.

Ted May No on a CB you can only transmit below 5 watts. Plus if your under 18 you don't need a GMRS license
@shawns.28518 жыл бұрын
People use hundreds/thousands of watts on C.B. I'd know, I ran hundreds in it's heyday. The F.C.C., especially back then, could not feasibly address issues of people running heat due to the vast majority running it, and due to the millions of people that use/used it. C.B. would be a much better application for something such as this.
@shawns.28518 жыл бұрын
Also, since your looking at things from a 'legal' standpoint, yes you must be licensed to operate GMRS, period. Although, like C.B. most don't abide by those rules because it isn't feasible to enforce those rules. Investigation would cost more than the fines could cover.

I'll never understand why midland didn't make the MXT100 repeater useable. As far as needing a GMRS license I doubt the FCC will take any action for transmitting with out a license, unless you stumble in area where a GMRS repeater is active. Most FRS / GMRS radios are strictly simplex and the interference would be messing around on the out put if any.
