***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

We have someone in our neighborhood who feeds the squirrels peanuts. Well, guess what? They bury them in our planting containers on our front porch. It took a long time to figure out a hy we were seeing them out there, but when we started to plant the containers, we found them growing.

A TIP..... If magnets will stick to your raised beds, you can use tulle or row cover to protect plants from insects or sun. Just make a frame to hold up the tent part and place the fabric on tightly, then hold down the loose ends with the super strong magnets that you can purchase at any big box store. It holds the thin fabric down even against strong winds. NO DRILLING HOLES! 😀😃😄

Nasturtiums would look great cascading off the ends of those planters, and would give you salad fixings all summer. Can't say for sure this is why, but I have had no tomato worms the past couple of years when I've planted nasturtiums and marigolds.

I really appreciate how well you to work together. Especially how you take turns presenting the material., rarely interrupt each other or talk over one another. It seems so natural too. I watched another channel where this wasn’t the case. The disc courtesy was so distracting and disturbing to me that I discontinued watching their channel. You two are great together. Well I’m sure things aren’t perfect all the time, you genuinely seem very happy together. Very inspiring. May the Lord continue to bless you. 🌻

I`m surprised that more food isn`t being grown on trellises. It seems to me that standing up in the garden is more practical to get the work done. Harvesting is the hardest part. That is probably why more people are doing raised beds.

If you haven't tried them sun sugar are awesome bite-size tomatoes. My little grandsons strip my Vines every time they come over. And the peanuts just brought back a good memory. One year I had a mystery plant in one of my raised beds and I let it grow and at the end of the summer I just pulled it out to throw it away assuming it was a weed and lo and behold I had peanuts in the ground. A blessing plant from my squirrels😊

Thank you for my 117-63-66 BP this morning! In my eighth decade, it's such a pleasure to tell my Dr. "Nope, not taking BP meds." Couple of things. My minds eye sees "Calendar Picture" garden this year. Next level beautiful. Can't wait! Also, with 25 year preservation from freeze drying, please share your long term menus you have planned. For instance, this year you have dill. That's about 5 years worth per plant. Oregano next year? You're inventory of preserves must dictate some of next seasons needs. With fruit jars one, you can see what you're running low on and two, they don't last 25 years. It strikes me you've changed that game quite a bit. I'm interested in your new logistics. Thanks again, y'all are a blessing.

I am about to buy some sheet metal. 12ft long. Each one cost $39 If you split it long ways it should make one 8ft by 4 ft bed, 1 ft tall. I suspect thats 25% of the cost of these maybe 15%. Yes Im cheap and there will be some edges you have to watch out for but If you are frugal I think the sheet metal is the way to go. Im getting the kind that is flat with only 4 Vs per sheet. Not the corrigated.

Years ago, my parents planted Kentucky Wonder beans in part of the corn field. They got so loaded with beans they were starting to bend the corn stalks over. If I remember right, they picked seven bushels of beans that year. That made for a lot of canning. I don't think they ever raised them again.

We also eat a keto lifestyle and I have to share how we eat summer squash and zucchini, slice them in half, and cut them into 1/2" thick chunks. Cut an onion, we use the sweet onions from Costco, cut them in half, and then in 1/2 chunks. In a pot add a small amount of water (you don't need much since the squash will make more water as they cook down) and add the squash and onion, simmer until tender, (if you have too much water in the pot you can drain it off so the butter and cream make a divinely creamy addition) add a good hunk of butter and a 1/4 cup of heavy cream, salt, and pepper to taste. I grew up eating it this way and it totally fits into a keto lifestyle.

You will enjoy growing plants in your raised beds. Last year, I only grew dwarf tomatoes, 6 varieties. One variety was Geranium Kiss. The tomato plant grew about 4 feet tall. There are a lot of tomatoes in a cluster. I found the flavor to be so-so, as were most of the dwarf tomato flavors. The yellow and dark purple tomatoes had the best flavors. The tomatoes have a pointy end, which I didn't like when eating them. I didn't grow them again this year. This year, I am only growing indeterminate tomatoes, 11 varieties, in potato grow bags that are 16" tall by 14" wide. The tomatoes are dark purple, yellow, red and orange and are cherry, grape and small slicers. I'm growing your favorite, Juliet. I'm growing yellow patty pan squash for the 1st time in 7 gallon grow bags, Sunburst variety. Planted 3 seeds, all germinated. Interestingly, 2 plants are producing yellow patty pans, and 1 plant is producing only green patty pans even though they are supposed to be yellow. Must be the hybrid factor. Have harvested 1 squash so far. It was tasty. Is best to harvest the squash when about 4 inches wide. If larger, I've read the flavor isn't as good and they become tougher. I put insect covers with zippers/drawstrings over the squash plants to keep out vine borer moths. Because of the covers, I have to pollinate the female flowers by hand, which is fun and interesting. Seem to be getting more male flowers than female flowers though, and they don't always open at the same time. Prayers for your dad's heart surgery. 🙏🙏🙏 My husband had open heart surgery 2 years ago, aortic valve replacement and one bypass. Recovery took a while but he's doing very well now. It is amazing the medical advances available for heart surgery. God blessed us with a great surgical doctor, and the cardiac ICU team was superb in the hospital. God bless.

****URGENT READ**** I did the same thing with spoon tomatoes! I put two on one side of a panel and they were beasts. I ended up having to hack them back so much just to control the sisters next to each other!! I hope you see this because I'm going to recommend that you only put one spoon tomato in that bed. It gets so crazy that it's actually as wide as the cattle panel and very gangly so when I didn't want to clip more to the trellis and it grew outward and sideways away from the trellis I ended up hacking back those areas as well. I'm in the Cincinnati Ohio area and I planted them in very fertile soil in the beds that I've had the longest. On the other side of the same trellis I had more indeterminate tomatoes. I had Marigolds in the same bed as the spoon tomatoes but on the other side in the second bed where I had the indeterminate tomatoes, I had a much smaller crop because the spoon tomato shaded it out! I also put some nasturtiums in that same bed that didn't do well at all. Because you're going to have the beans facing the Sun and your spoon tomatoes will get a little less sun maybe they won't be such a beast! Oh my gosh and they are the best to throw in any salad without having to cut them and the kids came over from next door and simply adored them!! They taste like you've mixed pineapple juice together with tomato juice almost just like my ground cherries tasted like! And the chickens couldn't get enough!

Spoon is a sweet currant type tomato. Very prolific 3 tomatoes will fit in a spoon. The trellises look great. I don't grow Kentucky wonder anymore. It is not resistant to rust in my hot humid climate. Provider is a good bush bean that has better disease resistance and Poamoho pole beans which has fewer problems with mildew and is rust resistant. Peanuts grow differently. After they grow the leaves wll grow pegs and the pegs need to go back into the ground because that is where the peanuts will form. If peanuts are kept too long in the ground and it starts to get fungal disease, it should not be eaten.

My mother always just called them summer squash. We didn’t garden although we had a couple of fruit trees in the back yard, but she would get them still small & green at the grocery store. She diced & parboiled them in a little water & evaporated milk, then seasoned with butter, salt & a little pepper. So yummy! She said that was the way her mother cooked them when she was little growing up in rural Kansas, my dad said the same thing growing up farming in Indiana.

Raw Spanish peanuts from the store work also, since they are raw and still alive. Soup peas grow in the garden if they are whole peas and not overaged in their packaging. You can always do germination testing in Jan-Feb if you wonder whether any seeds are viable.

I have had better harvests of indeterminate small tomatoes by not single stemming them. The reason for single stemming is to produce bigger tomatoes. But with cherry and smaller tomatoes you are not growing for size but quantity. Letting them bush out will produce a bigger quantity, but I dont let them get over 5 stems otherwise they become harder to harvest from.

It's interesting that you decided to plant asparagus in raised beds with weed cloth underneath. Asparagus roots go very deep, as far as 15 ft deep. They won't be able to tap minerals that deep by preventing their roots from going any deeper than a foot.

Great video as usual but I have to take a moment and talk about Kevin's t-shirt. it's always fun for me to read yalls shirts. I like them all but Kevin, the "farming is importanter " has to be my Fav so far. Don't know why but the truth and humor in it, really tickled me.

Now that you are growing in raised beds, rather than in the ground, you might want to try adding some beneficial herbs and dwarf flowers to most of the beds. I find that my raised beds do better when I do that. It attracts the right kinds of insects, and keeps my soil cooler having more foliage covering the soil, but I am in a hot dry climate. Perhaps, it's different in your area. I can't wait to see your garden results. I've learned so much from you both over the last several years. Prayers for your father, and God bless you both!🙏🙏

I was happy to see your planting your tomatoes in raised beds with a trellis. I'm doing the same thing. Last year I used tomatoes stakes to hold up my plants. They didn't work well at all. Good luck to us both.

This looks so good and easy to pick your harvest. The arches are a great feature in your garden area!!! Love it. Good job. Oh that is a great pole bean!!! Put marigolds on each end to help control insects!!! I ordered mine from your alls link last fall and another one this spring for Herbs! Love these and they are so easy to assemble. All the best. Prayers for your father.

I don't have a large garden area and besides, I don't have room in the house to store the harvest either and there's only me and my husband (and chickens and rabbits to eat the excess but we cannot consume a lot more that what's coming. Your evolving gardening methods, learned from your past experiences (and mistakes) are my 'manual'. My husband is the main gardener, I'm more of the structural 'co-gardener' (designing and building stuff and doing whatever he instructs me when he's away). I got Vegega boxes earlier this year but we still have the existing wooden planter boxes where he already grows vegetables and herbs, so we'll wait until after the harvest and I want to place weed barrier too so he doesn't waste his time weeding every spring before he can plant in the garden.

Heads up on the spoon tomatoes. They struggle to get started, but once they take off, they will grow so tall and have soooo many tiny tomatoes that have such great taste and the skins are not tough at all. I preferred Candyland, until I had these. These are now my favorites and kids love picking them and eating them.

That was a ton of work up-front, but so worth it now! I'm very happy you liked my recommendation for an open-pollinated dwarf okra! I'm pleased with it as well and am growing it again this year. Also, one note about Kentucky Wonder beans. I grew them for the first time last year. They taste great, but their foliage tends to be top-heavy. Mine were a bit bare near the bottom and full of leaves at the top, which made them a real mess on a bean teepee. I think they're meant for growing on corn stalks, where the high foliage gets more light. If they're like mine, they might make quite a hairy, tangled mess over your arches. Good meaty beans, though!

We have 2 tall beds 32" or 34", I don't remember now. In those beds we have asparagus, deep planted roots (12") and strawberries, shallow planted roots (get no deeper than 12"). They are growing so well in the same bed together! The first asparagus to come up are allowed to go to fern and provide some shade from the very hot summer E TN sun for the strawberries, which work well as a ground cover for the soil. I tell you, 2 perennial crops in the same bed, 4'X4' is absolutely amazing. The taller beds were a little more expensive but, absolutely worth it in the long run. 2 beds planted out needing very little attention year after year with almost guaranteed harvests - let's face it, nothing is 100%. We use the other high bed for other root harvests, potatoes, ginger, sun choke, turmeric, etc.) Also, I plant carrots on the edge under the beans, cucumber and tomato trellises. The leaves make a perfect shade garden. We've actually had lettuces and herbs last through most of the summer in those areas as well.

We plant a lot of peanuts. We often plant them IN the shell and they germinate beautifully that way too. We didn’t believe it would work but tried it years ago and it does just fine. Just fyi if anyone is interested.

Great video. I can understand the appeal of raised beds, my wallet can't justify the costs ! $300-600 per container depending on size and the soil/compost to fill it. I probably would never recoup the costs. I just go to local fruit/veggie stands or grocery store and have a wide variety.
