Yes that comparison trap is detrimental not only for learning but it can really stop a person from tapping into their own potential. I love that you are dedicating your time and channel in bringing awareness and helping other families with special needs children. (Ingrid)

My brother always got better therapy in a private practice or facility than he did from his public school. I love the curriculum breaks! 😂

I am so glad I found this video, I am a mom of two special needs children, I have decided to start homeschooling but the journey of researching information and choosing the right curriculum has been a bit overwhelming. Your video has definitely help me have a little more clarity of what steps we need to take. Thank you !!!!!

You are soooo right about private therapy vs public school therapy! I think so much of it has to do with the differences in resources available. This was really good!

"We've got to stop this comparing thing." Amen! We never did do the standardized testing except for the SAT, which is required for college. I just saw no point in it, since I knew what their skills were in math, language arts, and every other area because I'm with them all the time.

Thank you for this video! I know it’s an older one, but I have been beating myself up lately because he’s not at grade level in certain subjects, but that is the whole reason we chose homeschool! So he could go at his pace, not everyone else’s. Really appreciate the curriculum suggestions as well. We love AAR! It’s the one thing that connected with him and he just started level 4!

I love this! I have been struggling with which curriculums to try next for my 9 year old daughter. She is autistic, adhd, ocd and spd, so depending on the subject and curriculum we use, it can be a hit or miss or sometimes diaster of a day/week/semester! She hates reading, but can read pretty well. Which I only discovered when I gave her a placement test! She was holding out on me! 🤣🤣🤣 She thought I would let her off the hook, if she complained and cried enough, but no. I will definitely be checking out these curriculums! Thank you!

Wow! Another great video! Thanks, Leilani! I’ve commented on a few of your videos. I really have been learning a lot from you (and Naomi!). I’m from Calgary, Canada. My daughter, Annabelle Faith, is also 3 yrs old with DS (and had a heart defect - surgery at 4.5 months). I have 3 other kids whom I homeschool as well. Annabelle will be starting preschool in the fall at a special program for kids with DS. It’s designed to integrate the kids into a community preschool as well in their 2nd year. Then kindergarten. Recently, though, I’ve really started thinking about the option of homeschooling her too. My other three had at least a couple years at a school first, and I know I want Annie to go to this special preschool first. But looking down the road, it’s amazing to have resources like you, and the ideas you shared are just awesome! I will definitely start writing down my “whys”, especially for her. And I’ve been using AAS with my other kids, and am so interested in AAR, especially with Annie in mind. Also, I’ll start looking into private therapy options when the time comes (so far they’ve all been connected with her DS preschool and the children’s hospital) Last thing is about comparing... it’s even hard not to compare to others within the DS community. Each of those kiddos are so unique and reach each milestone at their own pace and even in their own order! Hm... (Sorry for this long comment! 😝 I just feel connected with what you’re doing, and feel excited to share my thoughts on this! Thank you!!!)

Hi! I love the long comment! Thank you! It’s so nice to connect with you. My daughter also have the heart surgery, we waited till 7 months because of her weight. I’ve thought about doing preschool with her, but honestly Florida is so homeschool friendly and the options are better doing it that route. The public school close to us is awful. It would just be babysitting and just stressful. So glad you enjoy these videos. This is why I do them, to connect with others.

Very glad I found your channel.. you have some really good info and very thorough videos. My wife and I have decided to do homeschooling for our kids and I'm learning a lot with your videos. I'll admit I'm a little intimidated and concerned if I can pull this through since I'll be the one teaching them during the morning and I've never done this before. I have a lot to learn.. but I think homeschooling will be the best for our kids specially in these crazy times we're living.

Can a parent be acused of educational neglect if you withdraw your child with an IEP from public school to be homeschooled, for failing to obtain or allow to receive recommended educational services for a diagnosed learning disorder?

No, they have no reason to do that. Just follow your states homeschool laws and you should be fine.

I’m Watching this after “online schooling” my special needs 1st grader due to COVID and seeing her take amazing strides. Now I’m considering homeschooling her because I see her doing so well, but it’s so scary. I feel like I’m so clueless and have no idea how all this works. Right now things are going great in her “online school” where she zooms with her general ed teacher, speech and special ed teachers. I sit with her to help her stay engaged and work with her through it all. I guess I’m afraid because right now her teachers still do the lessons and teaching. I’m acting like a teachers aid. Do you know of any curriculum that has online lessons? That we can both do together?
@LivingWithEve4 жыл бұрын
There are some, they are expensive. But honestly, if this is working for you, I would stick with it. I don’t think they have online one on one unless you find a tutor. Or even like the classroom zoom situations the schools are doing. It more videos, games and interactive worksheets. Time4Learning, Monarch, or even Outschool comes to mind. But only Time4Learning is considered For special needs.

I am really considering homeschooling my son with autism he is 8. Where should I start? which curriculum? Ive been working with him alot for a while. He has behavioral issues. I love your honesty
@LivingWithEve4 жыл бұрын
That's a really hard question to answer. Homeschooling is so relaxed and really up to you. I would honestly just start with the basics, Math and Language Art (Writing, Reading, Comprehension, Spelling, Handwriting, and Grammar). However, since you mentioned behavioral issues, keep the school work light and really work on building your relationship with him. Go on trips, the park, museum. Find out what he likes and start to build the curriculum around his favorite things and do his favorite things with him. This won't solve the behavioral issues, and you may need to seek outside help, but this will make things easier to handle. Hope that helps.
