This video has come at such a perfect time! Our twins are having a neuropsych test soon and knowing that a SEP is something out there is amazing! I knew about IEP’s but didn’t know there was a homeschool version! We have been members of HSLDA for 18 years but only recently needed the information about special needs. Thank you for highlighting this for everyone. And, if anyone out there is considering a membership with HSLDA, our family can wholeheartedly recommend it! Thank you again for this video! God bless 😊

Thank you for this video. My 9 year daughter had a stroke at birth. She has some delays and vision impairments that cannot be corrected and makes it difficult for her to read. My husband has wanted to homeschool and I’ve been scared. It’s crazy that I depend on the schools to know how to teach my own daughter better than I do. I am going to take the plunge!

I'm working on the SEP. We have had an IEP for about five years. We didn't feel we had any say for the first three years. It STILL feels mostly redundant because the teachers we work with in the Charter school don't really apply the practice of the goals. We also were told many times that we could better adapt certain goals; then the head of the "team" told us no. So it's been a hard fight and barely any progression from it. I am definitely looking forward to further freedom to adapt the methods of teaching to my child. 🌻

Can a parent be acused of educational neglect if you withdraw your child with an IEP from public school to be homeschooled, for failing to obtain or allow to receive recommended educational services for a diagnosed learning disorder?

Yes you should homeschool your kid with special needs if your in a good situation. My son has done much better at home than he ever did on school. He felt the accomodations for dyslexia just made him feel stupid because they wouldn't teach him. IE giving him a multiplication chart instead of teaching him multiplication facts.

Doctors and therapists are the WORST when it comes to homeschooling special needs kid. My daughter is academically on grade level mostly but struggles in math, and every time she goes to see an anti-homeschooling healthcare professional (most of them are) she gets quizzed on stuff that has nothing to do with the visit and if she doesn't know the answer to something that she should at her age (like she forgot her birthday or phone number) they blame me for homeschooling. Like they throw the fact that she is developmentally delayed for medical reasons out the window. They should also consider that her forgetfulness could also be the fact that she was totally unprepared to take a "pop quiz" when coming for occupational therapy. News flash, there are many kids who go to "real school" who are also weak in some subjects.
@LifeintheMundane2 жыл бұрын
We have definitely had therapists and medical professionals who have been very anti homeschool but we have also been blessed with those who are pro homeschooling or maybe not pro homeschool but are willing to be educated on the benefits.

I'm having such a hard time with finding a good schedule for my kids who just turned 4 and 5 years old but are working at a first grade level. My kids love doing school so I want to encourage them. I want to do Bible, Logic, Math, Language Arts including reading, other languages, science, geography, five in a row, art, stem, and makers space. How would you suggest that I do a schedule? I'm just feeling very defeated because I can't seem to get into a good flow.
@LifeintheMundane3 жыл бұрын
I am so sorry you feel defeated mama that is so discouraging I know, I would encourage you to see what you can combine. For instance you mentioned five in a row but that one curriculum includes geography, reading, and history I believe. I also saw that you mentioned STEM but then separately mentioned science, math, and engineering (makers space) so finding resource where you can combine those learning objectives can be really helpful. Also it sounds like your kiddos are very advance for their age and that is awesome. I am very big on encouraging your child in their strengths, that being said I think its also good to look at their ages and developmental milestones and even with being advance their developmental ages and the way their brain is wired is more geared towards learning through play so don't feel like each one of these things has to have a set curriculum or be a super structured or be on a daily basis. Feel free to rotate some of the items. For instance we do history one day and then the next day do science and it helps us be able to dig deeper in each subject without overwhelming our schedule.

Hi I am speaking on behalf of my mother. My brother finished SEN primary school and will be starting a secondary school. My mom has already excepted the Secondary school and she has been pondering upon the thought of homeschooling him instead. He is smaller in size compared to kids his age so she is scared he will get Bullied. So her question, now that she has excepted the school but has changed her mind, will the school agree to home schooling him instead. Second question is, how many hours a day is best to homeschool a SEN child? Third question is, will the government fund her for the resources needed and money to pay the private tutor?
@LifeintheMundane3 жыл бұрын
Those are great questions, the answers to those questions will vary depending on the state. What I would recommend is for you or your mom to contact the HSLDA at HSLDA.org to find out the specific answers you need as they are experts on homeschool laws. I will be praying though that homeschooling is a great experience for all who are involved.

Hi! I am new to the homeschooling world. My little brother has mental retardation and we found some online homeschool options but they have us select a grade level. He is in 9th grade but has a learning level of a 3rd grader. Can I select a different level? I wanted to have an online option to prove that we are homeschooling him. I know a lot of people don’t use homeschool online websites but do you all use an online program to record that he is being taught? 😅 I’m so confused
@LifeintheMundane3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the program if it is an online public school option then I’m not really sure but if it’s a homeschool online resource then 9 times out of 10 you select what grade level work they can handle vs there actual grade. So you would select 3rd. That being said you can reach out to the company directly that you are looking to work with and they should be able to help you to place him appropriately. Good luck.

I called HSLDA but they wouldn’t answer any of my questions because I am not a member. I would become a member if I was 100% sure of homeschool him but we are also looking into online private schools (hslda said the membership is for a year and can’t be cancelled. We don’t want to get stuck paying monthly if we decide not to homeschool) 😅
