Pile 3. There is a 3rd party. The whole wife and family. I stay away from him because I have all these feelings and I know he does too. I just know that he needs to be with his family. Very similar for me - guy with a family, friendly working relationship, thought nothing of it. Until the feelings HIT and he broke down and said he was ending his marriage.
