“Are political honours only there to recognise work for the party, for parliament or for the nation as a public servant?”
Liz Truss’s honour list shows a “culture of political patronage” which “can’t be good for British politics”, says Conservative MP, Tobias Ellwood.

Liz Truss should be investigated and her list should be scrutinised. The idea of a honours list that seems to reward Political ideology more so than people who deserve recognition, yet another political disgrace committed mostly by Tory Governments.

Truss and Kwarteng should be charged with misconduct in public office. It sickens me what they did to the country, the scale of damage is incredible - £37 BILLION blown on their hair brained project which every man and his dog could see was going to fail. It's criminal and they should be locked up for it.

Just playing devils advocate here, the only ways a PM can be replaced is by resignation, being overthrown (vote of no confidence) and losing their seat (losing the vote or not standing which is effectively resigning). Would you offer perks for being overthrown or voted out?

Truss should be utterly ashamed. But, she has no shame. She should've done the decent thing and not provided an "Honours List," but she has no decency. Somewhere, in her hubristic mind, she thinks she's done no wrong and probably hopes for a second bite at the cherry. Gods help us all, if she ever gets one!

It’s a pity there isn’t a mechanism to veto this, even if it has long been ceremonial one should exist. I am no royalist, but it would do wonders if the King could take sufficient umbrage to throw out her list.

@calumbishop7082 9 ай бұрын
There is a mechanism to veto it, the problem is its in the hands of the current PM, and even though Sunak is no fan of Liz Truss he will still wave these through. But what it does mean is that Sunak himself won't likely be able to craft his resignation honours in complete impunity, assuming he loses the next election to Labour. Even so, this list is abysmal.

I can barely tell this apart from the satire video I just watched... What does "the optics" mean in this case? Because in reality it's a an actual disgrace not an optical illusion. People aren't worried about the optics of British politics. Calling something a problem of "optics" makes it seem like a PM who spent more time actively campaigning for the job than doing it having a resignations honours list would be fine if the circumstances were different. The people who are still recovering from her economic damage but I suppose at least she hasn't given her hairdresser a gong. Though she has rewarded Matthew Elliott and Jon Moynihan for all their help inflicting Brexit onto the UK public and giving the Tory party money. It's like she's trying to point out there are other thickies in the world with native overconfidence that their idiotic theories needed to become policy regardless of the resulting carnage.

0:51 it’s not a curiously British tradition.... most countries in Europe and across the world have high honours that they grant to wonderful people, only difference is they tend to give them to the prime ministers mate less because they don’t let the PM just give them out... they have to prove to the head of state, usually a President, that the recipient should actually receive them. I really do hate it when people say xyz is a uniquely British thing and I can immediately think of 5 or 10 or even 2 other countries in Europe that do the same.

Noted that Tobias proposes the peerage of Cameron as an example of it being "right". The backdoor appointment of a failed and rejected PM, the Greensill lobby sleazeball, the friend of Mone, not elected, immune from parliamentary scrutiny (because he's not elected), to one of the highest offices of state. From where he starts lecturing the elected parliaments of the devolved nations on what to do. It is a perfect case of the way the tories have undermined the country with their slithering, selfserving, vain and arrogant decade of theft and deceit.

To be fair it must be difficult for him to contemplate anything with his majority only 8806 in his Constituency Seat but I would expect a more enlightened response to the South African application and whether the UK is supporting this or not or just staying out of the argument temporarily.
